Today?s gorgeous family home comes to us from Adelaide, and belongs to multi-tasking creative Rebekah Cichero ? co-founder of Adelaide?s much loved Bowerbird Bazaar markets, and propertietor of sweet furniture and interiors shop One Small Room! ?Rebekah is one seriously energetic and inspiring creative, having lived in London for 8 years working as a stylist before settling down in Adelaide with partner Tim. If all this sounds a touch familiar, that?s because we?interviewed?Rebekah this time last year! ?(Re-visit our original interview for the full backstory!).

Nestled in Adelaide?s leafy suburb of Croydon, this generous Victorian family house actually backs onto Rebekah?s gorgeous little shop. ?It?s home to Rebekah and husband Timothy, plus?Ruby (8 yrs), Tobias (5 yrs) and Chico the dog. ?The family have been here nearly five years.

Whilst it still retains much of its original charm, this home has been thoroughly renovated and extended to modernise and open up it?s functional spaces for this busy family. ?These works happened in roughly two stages. ?The front rooms were renovated when the family first moved in, and room layout reconfigured to make way for an ensuite and walk-in robe in the master bedroom. ?A few years later the full home extension was completed ? including new open plan kitchen, dining and lounge area, and a new main bathroom. ?Rebekah and Timothy also?landscaped the front yard, added a new fence and rainwater tanks to ensure a healthy and productive garden, even in Adelaide?s notoriously dry summers.

If you?ve been to Rebekah?s sweet shop, One Small Room, then the eclectic edit of furniture and artwork here will be no surprise! ?As is often the case with creative retailers, Rebekah?s home is an extension of her shop and vice versa ? furniture and art finds itself on high rotation between both spaces. ??We often find new favourites when sourcing for the shop, so we move something out from home and sell it to someone else to love!? says Rebekah.

There are, however, a few treasured pieces she and Tim would never part with. ??We do have some favourite pieces, the stripped back carousel horse and the Le Corbusier ?LC 4? chaise (?Tim?s chair?) bought when we lived in London, pre-children? says Rebekah.?Other favourite pieces include two paintings by Jacob Logos. ??We all fell in love with the artwork of Jacob Logos, so deciding on the painting above the fireplace (Little Sundance)?and another above our bed (Evening Hunt) was a very easy decision? recalls Rebekah.

As is often the case with a weekly home features, it?s not so much the house but the whole neighbourhood which Rebekah and her family call home. ??We live right near the iconic ?Queen st? strip with the best bakery ever (Red Door Bakery) and of course our shop, only about a metre away from our home and office!? says Rebekah. ??Croydon is an amazing community of creative types, caring people who say hi when you walk by. Kids meet and play on Sundays while parents have coffee, you can get a good haircut, ride bikes and still be in the city in 7 minutes or to the beach in 15 or the hills in 40! Nothing?s too far away. We feel rather lucky here?. ?Ahhh Adelaide, such a Utopian land?!

Big thanks to Rebekah and co. for sharing their fabulous family home ? do share the love with a little visit to the One Small Room?and Bowerbird Bazaar?websites. ?Thanks too, to?Jacqui Way?for the stunning shots!

Europe rights court condemns Poland in abortion rape case

STRASBOURG, France (Reuters) - The European Court of Human Rights on Tuesday condemned Poland for the inhumane and degrading treatment of a 14-year-old rape victim whom the authorities tried to stop having an abortion.

The girl's right to a private and family life had been flouted in 2008, the court ruled, saying she had been arbitrarily detained after being briefly placed in a home to separate her from her mother, who favored an abortion.

"The court was particularly struck that the authorities started criminal proceedings for illicit sexual relations against the adolescent who, according to the prosecutor and medical reports, should have been considered the victim of sexual abuse," the Strasbourg judges said in their verdict.

It said that Poland had violated article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights - "prohibition of inhuman or degrading treatment".

A staunchly Catholic country, Poland's legislation on abortion is amongst the strictest in Europe and the Strasbourg court has already twice condemned it for failing to ensure the law on the subject is respected.

The hospitals in the southeastern city of Lublin did everything to dissuade the girl from having an abortion, sending her to see a priest before refusing to carry out the operation. Officials alerted local media to the story, prompting harassment of the girl by anti-abortion campaigners.

The abortion was finally carried out by a hospital in the northern port city of Gdansk, some 500 km (310 miles) from the girl's home.

In its ruling, the court said the case highlighted the huge gap in Poland between the statute book - which should have allowed the girl an abortion under a 1993 family planning law - and how doctors and local officials behave.

Although the case against the girl for illegal sexual relations was eventually dropped, so was the one against her alleged rapist, the court said.

The court, which has jurisdiction in the 47 countries of the Council of Europe and is not part of the European Union, awarded the girl 30,000 Euros in damages and her mother 15,000 euros.

Goldman's advice for Citi's new CEO: Sell, sell, sell - The Term ...

CitigroupFORTUNE -- Citigroup should dump its junk.

That's the advice of Goldman Sachs analyst Richard Ramsden for Citi CEO Michael Corbat, who took over the job two weeks ago. Ramsden says that delinquent home loans and other bad assets left over from the financial crisis have proven to be 10 times more toxic to Citi than to its rivals. His advice: Sell now.

The Goldman analyst suggests Citi (C) dump $80 billion in assets by the end of next year. That's about double the pace Citi's ex-CEO Vikram Pandit was on. Most of it is the junk left over from the financial crisis, bad loans and businesses like subprime lending and collecting mortgage payments that Citi wants out of.

MORE: America's best job creators are slowing down

But Ramsden also suggests that Citi might want to think about ditching bank branches as well. "[Citi's] U.S. consumer bank is less efficient than peers despite a superior branch footprint," wrote Ramsden in a recent report.

The question for Corbat is how to get rid of the bank's junk. He could spin it if off in one big pile. But Ramsden says that probably would require Citi to extend a big loan to the newly separate company, or for the bank to guarantee some of the assets, in order to make the new company solvent and attractive to investors. So that might not really get Citi off the hook. A better solution might be for Corbat to sell Citi's unwanted assets individually for whatever price he can get.

That was a strategy Pandit was reluctant to pursue, not wanting to cut prices and take losses. Indeed, part of the reason Pandit finally got booted was because its brokerage division ended up fetching much less than the bank thought. So Corbat might want to watch himself.

MORE: Meet Citi's new boss

But the earnings drag of holding onto the unwanted stuff might be outweighing the cost of dumping it. In the most recent quarter, Citi's return on equity, a key measure of bank profitability, was just over 8%. That compares to 13% for rival JPMorgan Chase (JPM) and 17% for Wells Fargo (WFC). Without the junky assets, Ramsden figures Citi's ROE would nearly double to 14%.

And Corbat might have an easier time selling now. A number of hedge funds have booked double-digit gains this year buying up subprime mortgage loans. The recent sale of the former subprime mortgage loan division of General Motors sparked a bidding war.

What's more, Citi's stock fell 90% under Pandit's watch. So Corbat should probably think about taking a different approach than his predecessor.

Still, in resurrecting Citi and its stock, Corbat got thrown another obstacle this week. Three of Citi's buildings, including two in its major complex in Tribeca, were damaged in Hurricane Sandy and the resultant flood in downtown Manhattan. One of the buildings, 111 Wall Street, might be inaccessible for months.

So much for Corbat's CEO honeymoon.

Prescription software developer raises $4.25M for physical

A healthcare IT startup is developing physical rehabilitation software that could be prescribed by doctors or physical therapists.

Reflexion Health has raised $4.25 million from the West Health Investment Fund for its Rehabilitation Tracker program, according to a company statement. It is an affiliate of the West Health Institute founded by telemarketing billionaires Gary and Mary West.

The program uses Microsoft Kinect motion software licensed from the West Health Institute. The Rehabilitation Tracker provides exercises, instructional videos and patient education material that can be set to the needs of each patient. The software allows a physician and physical therapist to track the performance and adherence of their patient.

The concept of prescribing software programs isn?t a new one. New York-based Happtique has been recruiting for a prescription apps pilot program that includes physical therapy as well as areas such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and personal training.

It?s the second of two companies in the La Jolla, California-based West Health Incubator, also affiliated with the West Health Institute. The first was Sense4Baby, a company developing wireless, remote fetal monitoring systems to help obstetricians monitor the health of a mother and baby remotely when a physician isn?t available.

In an interview with Xconomy, Reflexion CEO and co-founder Spencer Hutchins said it will use the funding to advance development of its interactive software. Hutchins said the company wants to explore a marketing approach that would entail enrolling physicians and physical therapists as resellers who would prescribe the program.

Patient adherence is a hot area for providers who are under pressure to reduce readmissions that stem from issues like not following physician instructions or taking medication.

Primates' brains make visual maps using triangular grids

Monday, October 29, 2012

Primates' brains see the world through triangular grids, according to a new study published online Sunday in the journal Nature.

Scientists at Yerkes National Primate Research Center, Emory University, have identified grid cells, neurons that fire in repeating triangular patterns as the eyes explore visual scenes, in the brains of rhesus monkeys.

The finding has implications for understanding how humans form and remember mental maps of the world, as well as how neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's erode those abilities. This is the first time grid cells have been detected directly in primates. Grid cells were identified in rats in 2005, and their existence in humans has been indirectly inferred through magnetic resonance imaging.

Grid cells' electrical activities were recorded by introducing electrodes into monkeys' entorhinal cortex, a region of the brain in the medial temporal lobe. At the same time, the monkeys viewed a variety of images on a computer screen and explored those images with their eyes. Infrared eye-tracking allowed the scientists to follow which part of the image the monkey's eyes were focusing on. A single grid cell fires when the eyes focus on multiple discrete locations forming a grid pattern.

"The entorhinal cortex is one of the first brain regions to degenerate in Alzheimer's disease, so our results may help to explain why disorientation is one of the first behavioral signs of Alzheimer's," says senior author Elizabeth Buffalo, PhD, associate professor of neurology at Emory University School of Medicine and Yerkes National Primate Research Center. "We think these neurons help provide a context or structure for visual experiences to be stored in memory."

"Our discovery of grid cells in primates is a big step toward understanding how our brains form memories of visual information," says first author Nathan Killian, a graduate student in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University. "This is an exciting way of thinking about memory that may lead to novel treatments for neurodegenerative diseases."

In the experiments in which rats' grid cells were identified, the cells fired whenever the rats crossed lines on an invisible triangular grid.

"The surprising thing was that we could identify cells that behaved in the same way when the monkeys were simply moving their eyes," Buffalo says. "It suggests that primates don't have to actually visit a place to construct the same kind of mental map."

Another aspect of grid cells not previously seen with rodents is that the cells' responses change when monkeys are seeing an image for the second time. Specifically, the grid cells reduce their firing rate when a repeat image is seen. Moving from the posterior (rear) toward the anterior (front) of the entorhinal cortex, more neurons show memory responses.

"These results demonstrate that grid cells are involved in memory, not just mapping the visual field," Killian says.

Consistent with previous reports on grid cells in rats, Killian and Buffalo observed "theta-band" oscillations, where grid cells fire in a rhythmic way, from 3 to 12 times per second. Some scientists have proposed that theta oscillations are important for grid cell networks to be generated in development, and also for the brain to put together information from the grid cells. In the monkeys, populations of neurons exhibited theta oscillations that occurred in intermittent bouts, but these bouts did not appear to be critical for formation of the spatial representation.

Vision is thought to be a more prominent sense for primates (monkeys and humans) compared with rodents, for whom touch and smell are more important. While grid cells in rodents and primates were detected in different types of experiments, Buffalo says that it doesn't mean grid cells necessarily have a different nature in primates.

"We are now training a monkey to move through a virtual 3-D space. My guess is that we'll find grid cells that fire in similar patterns as the monkey navigates through that space," she says.

Buffalo says future experiments could examine how monkeys navigate in real space, including changes in head or body orientation, to determine how grid cells respond.

The Enzo Ferrari Story

The Enzo Ferrari Story

It's mid winter, northern Italy, February 1898, and it is snowing heavily. Heavily enough, in fact, to prevent one young couple in the area from officially recording the birth of their son until two days after the event, on 20 February after his actual birth on the 18th - so forever after, 20 February 1898 would always be quoted as his birth date. And as it would turn out, that would become typical of the new arrival's relationship with authority and convention almost throughout his life, when he never seemed to have much time for doing things the 'ordinary' way. Because Enzo Anselmo Ferrari, as the boy was officially registered at two days old, would achieve great things, but rarely by working to the book.

The family lived on the outskirts of Modena, where Enzo's father, Alfredo, ran a small but busy metalworking business that, for most of the time, gave the family a fairly comfortable lifestyle. Enzo had an older brother, also called Alfredo, who was two years his senior. They shared many things, including a bedroom when they were young, and a love of homing pigeons, but in one respect they were quite different, and with a surprising twist. Alfredo senior would have liked both boys to follow in his footsteps and become engineers, but while young Alfredo accepted the idea and studied diligently, Enzo (who would become synonymous with some of the most exotic automobile engineering in the world) never showed the remotest interest in formal engineering training, or to be honest in a formal education at all.

At school he was far more interested in sports than in academic subjects, and he fulfilled one of his childhood career ambitions by briefly writing local football match reports for the prestigious newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. But he grew out of an even bigger ambition, to become an opera singer, and in September 1908, he switched ideas again, after his father had taken him to nearby Bologna where he saw Felice Nazzaro's FIAT winning the Coppa Florio road race. Now, the ten-year-old Enzo Ferrari wanted to be a racing driver.

He had already had contact with cars, at a time when they were still rare in rural Italy where the family lived. His father owned one, and had started to service and repair cars for other owners in his workshops. And in his early teens, Enzo himself began to learn how to drive. How little did he know then that there was going to be such a famous marque of sportscars known as Ferrari, and would go on to world recognition on the road and on the racetrack.

At the same time, Enzo Ferrari was being forced to grow up very quickly. In 1914, World War I broke out; and in 1916, within months of each other, Enzo's father and brother both died - his father from pneumonia, his brother from an illness contracted during military service. In 1917, Enzo followed him into the army, and was assigned to be a blacksmith, shoeing horses. Like father and older brother, though, he suffered illnesses, and after a round of operations and hospital stays he was discharged in 1918, with what looked like poor prospects for the immediate future.

The family business had died with his father and brother, he had no real qualifications, and there were very few jobs on offer. He found one, though, and with a motoring connection - driving refurbished ex-military light vehicle chassis between Turin and Milan, for a Bolognese engineer who had started a business rebodying them for the civilian market. And it was through this apparently mundane driving job that Enzo Ferrari moved a step closer to that still burning motor sporting ambition. History would show how he fulfilled his dreams with the number of Ferrari sales that have been acheived since that time. The world just wouldn't be the same without the prancing horse.

YouTube Marketing Tips | Video Marketing, Social Media Manager ...

YouTube is already become one of the most popular websites on the internet and people admit that they spend hours on the video sharing site that has millions of views on a daily basis. The site continues to grow and people are now able to use YouTube marketing tips that work for their own benefit. A lot of businesses are now able to use YouTube as their platform to reach out and find more potential customers.

?more at?YouTube Marketing Tips That Work

Contrary to what most people seem to think, YouTube is not just a vapid online video streaming platform that features videos of adorable kittens and hilarious animal antics. YouTube, with a larger cumulative membership base than Facebook and Twitter combined, also serves as a very effective social media platform. Some people might look askew at this observation, and that can be forgiven.

Because in the cursory glance, YouTube doesn?t make its marketing viability apparent. Neither does the often obscene and inane comments on most video channels help its claim to be a social media platform. If one scrutinizes a little more closely though, one would notice the enormous marketing potential that YouTube possesses.

Besides the massive number of members and casual viewers who regularly surf YouTube, the involvement of the visual media in this website only adds to the effect o the punch that YouTube can pack in putting across an idea. And what is marketing if it?s not putting across an idea to the target demographic?

Various web marketing blogs always ask entrepreneurs to face one cold hard fact at the onset; their video is not likely to generate video-virality in the way videos of kittens frolicking in the grass do. But that should not deter from engaging in creating a marketing drive for YouTube, because the focus of such a marketing drive would be to engage and conscript the loyalty of a specialized section of the demographic.

Why YouTube?

The most recent statistics on online video and YouTube are mind-blowing: Nielsen reported that Americans streamed 15 billion videos in the most recently recorded month (May 2011). While traditional TV viewing was up only 0.2% over last year, Internet video viewing was up 35% and mobile video viewing went up 20%.

Before you throw all your marketing dollars into YouTube, however, you might want to consider this other statistic: 35 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube? every minute. In the time it takes you to read this article, about two weeks of fresh content will be posted. Watch the video below and add another three days.

In other words, there?s a lot of competition for those eyeballs. So, how do you maximize your YouTube marketing results?

#1: Create compelling videos.

Most of us will never create a ?viral? video with millions of views because we don?t own a piano-playing cat or a sneezing baby panda, but thankfully those aren?t required for success. In fact, most of us couldn?t handle a million new customers all at once, anyway. ?Now serving 3,424,022. No? Now serving 3,424,023. Please, everyone, form a straight line. No pushing.?

not your competition

This is not your competition. Thank God.

Instead, you should create content that addresses your audience?s needs. Your goal should be to create videos that are helpful, valuable and compelling to your prospects and clients. If you can blog about it, you can create a video about it. Your video content may consist of how-to?s, answers to frequently asked questions, expert interviews, screen video captures, slide shows and more.

Mari Smith provides some great suggestions on content creation in How to Integrate Video Into Your Social Media Marketing.

While many people may have questions on the technical aspects of video creation, I?ll leave that to people more skilled than myself. Be sure to check out video guru Steve Garfield?s site and Dave Kaminski?s WebVideoUniversity.com.

#2: Make your video findable.

Your videos should be findable both within and outside of YouTube. Videos often appear on the first page of search engines, and are a proven method of leap-frogging your competition to the top of the search results page. The fact that Google owns YouTube can?t be overlooked.

how to stop a puppy from biting

Create a video that targets your audience?s searches and you?ll grab their attention.

To make your video more findable, you?ll want to focus on three key areas:

  • Title: Make sure your targeted keywords are in the first few words of your title. Another trick is to add a colon after your initial keywords and rephrase your title for maximum effect. For example, your video on saving money for college might be called ?College Savings Plans: The 529 Plan and Your Child.?
  • Description: Two things to keep in mind here: 1) start your description with a full URL, and 2) don?t be stingy with your description?more is? well, more. Be as descriptive and keyword-rich as possible. This will help you get found more easily by people searching YouTube for your type of content. You can also include more URLs throughout your content.
url description

Create links from your video description (as Amy Porterfield did here) to a page you want to drive traffic to.

  • Tags: Be sure to include any and all related keywords in the tags field.

These aren?t the only variables in getting found, but they?re the easiest to manage and control. Page views, subscribers, comments and likes can all affect your video?s visibility.

#3: Brand your YouTube channel.

Even without spending the big bucks for a brand channel or becoming a YouTube partner, you still have the opportunity to create a branded experience on YouTube.

Consider your YouTube channel your ?home away from home.? In other words, you can turn your channel into a destination. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

  • Create a custom background and choose your colors to match your branding. As with every social media platform, the more branded and ?lived-in? your profile appears, the more credibility you appear to have? warranted or not. A generic or default design makes you appear fly-by-night.
gaming bits

Be sure to brand your YouTube channel appropriately.

  • Choose ?Player View? as your layout. Unlike the Grid View, the Player View features one big video that can be set to autoplay. Because total views can positively impact your visibility, you want to make sure your featured video is set to autoplay.
playerview

Choose Player View and Autoplay Featured Video for maximum effect.

  • Create Playlists and feature your best content in the right column. Playlists are a way of organizing videos on YouTube. Although you can create playlists of any video?whether you made it or not?for your channel, consider creating a playlist of your most popular videos, or ones that best represent your products and offerings.
For example, if you offer bicycling tours of New England, you might create a playlist that consists of ?Bike Tours of Maine,? ?Bike Tours of New Hampshire,? ?Bike Tours of Vermont,? and so on.If you own a pet store, you might have a Care & Feeding playlist with such hits as ?Taking Care of Your Iguana,? ?Feeding Tips for Your Parakeet,? and ?What Will Your New Pet Snake Eat??Just as you have a home page on your website and silos of information for your different products and services, you can replicate this on your channel through clever use of the Featured Video and Playlist.

#4: Use annotations to build subscribers.

You can add annotations to your YouTube videos that include clickable calls to action. These annotations appear on top of your videos for a specified length of time and can include links to other videos, playlists or channels, or include a subscribe option.

This is also helpful if you have created a video with out-of-date information. Rather than deleting the video, you can create a new video. Then go back to the original video and embed a link that takes people to the updated, corrected version.

(If you make Facebook how-to videos, you should expect to use this trick quite a bit.)

#5: Post a bulletin and alert your friends and subscribers.

At the top of your channel is the Post Bulletin tab. You can create a bulletin and a link to a video that will appear on your subscribers? and friends? home pages. This is a great way to draw extra attention?and traffic?to your video.

post bulletin

Increase your visibility by posting a bulletin.

bulletin

Bulletins appear on subscribers? and friends? home pages.

#6: Use YouTube Ads.

Julie Perry, the social media director at BLASTmedia, calls these the ?last frontier? of online advertising.

She reports, ?People are coming [to YouTube] and directly entering in search queries of what they?re looking for? You can bid on those keywords just as you would Google pay-per-click. But instead of a text ad coming up on the right-hand side as it does on Google, you get a video and a thumbnail of a video.?

?The best part is that you can bid on keywords for pennies on the dollar compared to what you pay for a Google text ad or even a Facebook ad.?

ads

You can bid on keywords in YouTube just like on Google.

Julie also talks about another type of YouTube advertising, ?Once you have your video submitted as a Promoted Video, it then has the opportunity to run what are called ?CTA? ads. CTA stands for ?call to action.? They?re clickable and they allow you to click right over from a video to a website.?

For an in-depth interview with Julie Perry, check out Killer YouTube Marketing Tactics for Small Business.

#7: Leverage other social media platforms.

YouTube is a social media platform, not an island. Here are some ways to extend the reach of your video and make it more shareable:

  • Blog it. Every time you post a new video, you should create a blog post around it. Use a keyword-rich title, and fill your post with appropriate, complementary content. This will deliver your video to your blog subscribers and increase its chances of being found in a search. Plus, you can add your own sharing buttons on your blog, making it easier for other people to share your content.
  • Post it to Facebook. Whether on your profile page or on your business page, you can reach a much wider audience on Facebook. Plus, video is a great way of increasing your EdgeRank.
  • Tweet it. Good content goes farther on Twitter.
  • Submit it to StumbleUpon. This social bookmarking site has always been a powerful referrer, and recently surpassed Facebook (yes, that Facebook!) for driving the most U.S. web traffic for social media sites.

#8: Review YouTube Insights for more, um, insights.

YouTube has some powerful analytics that give you insight into who?s watching your videos and how they discovered them. You can gather information on an individual video or on all the videos you?ve uploaded.

Reviewing your most-watched videos or the videos with the most community feedback (comments, likes, etc.) can point to what type of content resonates most with your target audience.

?more at 8 Ways to Maximize Your YouTube Marketing Results

1. Keep it Short and Simple

First of all, YouTube is a not used for dumping massive files. The size of the video files you can upload to YouTube is quite limited so you must keep it simple and short. Most of the visitors do not check out long and boring videos so I suggest that you do not go over 5-6 minutes. If you know your niche well, 5 minutes is a good deal; make sure you include all the important details. However, if you have a video that needs to be longer then you can simply break them into smaller segments and then upload it separately.

2. Keep it Relevant to The Topic

For creating a successful YouTube video for marketing, you must make sure that your video clips are relevant to your niche or topic. People are constantly searching for information and videos related to your niche so make sure that you are covering your topics in your videos and include all the necessary details. A YouTube channel should focus on one niche or topic. If you want to create something on another niche then it is better that you create another channel.

For example: A music channel should have everything related to music while a money making channel should have every videos related to money making.

3. Brand Your Content and Videos

If you are the original creator of the content then you should brand it with your name and logo along with a link to your website. Branding is very important because it gives you the credibility. On top of that, if your videos provide value then tons of visitors will share them with others. In this way, if your video is posted or uploaded elsewhere, you will still get the credit and traffic because of your branding.

There are several good tools that can help you do mark your content.

4. Use Humor in Your Videos

Check out some of the funny videos on YouTube. Have you ever wondered why they receive tons of traffic every day? People love humor; we all love to laugh. Humor is also one of the best methods for attracting audience or a targeted group. There are several popular YouTube channels that have spread their messages across using humor in their videos. If your videos are not interesting, there is no point in checking them out. Be real and make a difference.

5. Promote Your Videos

Now the most important part: marketing and promoting your videos. Your videos will never get seen if you don?t promote them well. Of course, unless you are a celebrity or a hotshot, in that case it?s totally different. There are multiple ways of promoting your content. First, you can email your friends and subscribers and tell them about it. You can also create several web 2.0 properties such as Squidoo, Hubpages, Weebly and include your videos in them. Get a twitter account and a facebook fan page, do ppc, email marketing, forum and blog posting and many more. I can name tons of methods but I hope you got the point.

Docs Make Push to Lower Kids? Pain, Stress in ER

Pediatric group recommends ways to better manage distress

MONDAY, Oct. 29 (HealthDay News) ? A trip to the emergency room often means a child is in pain, and it?s a near certainty that the visit will also be fraught with anxiety.

That?s why the American Academy of Pediatrics has issued a new report emphasizing the importance of controlling pain and anxiety in children who need emergency medical treatment.

?There are a lot of modalities for reducing pain in children, and we?re doing a lot better in terms of kids? pain than we used to,? said report author Dr. Joel Fein, an attending physician in the emergency department at the Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia.

?Parents should advocate for the children for pain and anxiety management? if they feel they aren?t getting adequate control, said Fein, who also is a professor of pediatrics and emergency medicine at the University of Pennsylvania?s Perelman School of Medicine.

The new report was published online Oct. 29 and in the November print issue of the journal Pediatrics.

There are many barriers to achieving a pain-free ER visit, according to the report. One is a fear of side effects. Another is a concern that giving medications to mask the pain might make it more difficult or time-consuming to make a diagnosis, which could affect treatment.

Even topical anesthetics might not be used if doctors believe they may delay the right diagnosis. Topical anesthetics also aren?t readily available in all emergency rooms, according to the report.

Narcotic medications still carry a stigma, and doctors may be less likely to use these drugs in children. What?s more, the report says there continues to be a racial bias in the prescription of these drugs, with black children less likely to receive them for pain relief.

The new report suggests that these barriers can be overcome, and that pain relief should start even before a child reaches the hospital if they are coming in an ambulance.

Once at the hospital, it?s important to keep the child calm. Increased anxiety leads to a greater perception of pain, according to the report. The authors recommended that each family be given a private room, ideally with colorful walls, pictures on the ceilings and a collection of toys or games to keep the child distracted in this unfamiliar environment.

The report suggested that medications such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen or oral narcotics can help relieve pain, as can topical analgesics. The report also recommends using topical anesthetics to numb areas before the placement of IV catheters.

?Children have a pretty significant fear of needles,? Fein said. ?Topical anesthesia can offer pain protection during IV line placement and [drawing blood].?

The report adds that the use of pain-relieving medications doesn?t appear to alter physicians? ability to make a diagnosis in a timely fashion.

Fein said that not all of the report?s recommendations have to do with medications. ?For the youngest infants, even just giving sugar water can help reduce pain,? he said.

Child life specialists are specifically trained to perform distraction procedures to help keep a child calm. These specialists can teach other members of the staff ways to keep children from focusing on their pain, Fein said.

One of these specialists agreed with Fein.

?I think we are all striving toward achieving the goal of pain-free emergency care,? said Dr. Hnin Khine, a pediatric emergency specialist at the Children?s Hospital at Montefiore in New York City.

?We can do most procedures now in a calmer way, but we still have more to do,? she said. ?This report is not a surprise, but it reminds us to stay on top of pain management.?

One important aspect to keeping a child calm is their parents, she said.

?Parents are often very anxious, recalling their own past ER experiences. It?s important that we educate parents as well as the child,? Khine said. ?They don?t have to tell their children to be strong even though it may hurt. We have to let them know that we can do this pain-free now. It?s a whole learning curve for all of us.?

Ladera Ranch Real Estate Green Homes | Real Estate Industry Blog

?

A ?green home? is a home that?s energy efficient and has less of a negative impact on the environment. Green homes are gaining in popularity in Ladera Ranch real estate. With energy costs continuing to rise it might be a good idea for you to upgrade your home with green features. Some green features include: solar panels, Energy Star appliances, double or triple paned windows, sustainable building materials like bamboo, low flow toilets, and skylights. Installing green appliances and features will decrease utility costs and some energy companies offer credits on bills for even more savings. A recent study by the?University of California researchers found that green-certified, single-family homes sold for $34,800 more ? or 9 percent more ? than comparable non-green certified homes. The National Association of Realtors have also found in a survey that green, energy efficient homes stay on the market a fewer number of days than homes lacking green features.

Slow Cooker Vegetarian Cannellini Bean and Kale Soup Recipe ...

As much as I whine about the cold weather, when you look at the Soup, Stew, and Chili section of my recipe archives you can tell I love cold-weather dishes, especially soup.? Some of my favorite soups are the ones where I start with an idea and add things until it tastes good, but even when I have a recipe to start with like I did this time, I tend to improvise with most of the soups I make.? This slow cooker soup that can cook all day while you're at work was adapted from one I saw in The Italian Slow Cooker, a book that's loaded with good ideas.? I increased the amount of stock (and might use even more next time), added some dried Italian herbs, and served the soup with shaved Parmesan Cheese instead of croutons, for a Phase One soup that was warm and filling, and loaded with flavor.
I used chicken stock because that's what I had in the freezer, but if you used vegetable stock and skipped the Parmesan, this would be a tasty vegan slow cooker soup.? If you're not making a vegan version, this is the perfect soup to add some Parmesan rinds and let them melt into the soup while it cooks all day.? If it's soup weather where you are, this soup would make a perfect Meatless Monday dinner!? (You can find more meatless recipes by using the label Meatless Monday or checking Vegetarian Recipes in the recipe index, and I'm also doing a meatless slow cooker recipe each Monday on Slow Cooker from Scratch.? For more Meatless Monday ideas from other bloggers check Meatless Monday at BlogHer, where I write a weekly post spotlighting one of the fabulous meatless recipe ideas I find around the web or visit my Meatless Monday Pinterest board.)

I know some of you hate to have to saute things for the slow cooker, but I promise that sauteeing the onions and garlic with the Italian Seasoning for a few minutes really does increase the flavor.? (If you skip that step, I promise I won't take it personally!)

I used the bowl attachment of my immersion blender to coarsely puree the 2 cans of Cannellini beans, but after I wondered why I didn't just puree them in the slow cooker with the immersion blender.? You can also use a blender or food processor. Finely chop 8 oz. kale leaves and give them a wash in the salad spinner if you're using garden kale. I used fresh sage leaves from my garden, but dried sage would also work.

Put the sauteed onion mixture, pureed beans, 1 can tomatoes with juice, stock or broth, chopped kale, and sage leaves into the slow cooker (with Parmesan rinds if using) and cook about 4 hours on high or 8-10 hours on low.?

The soup that won't win any beauty contests, but it was delicious!? (Next time I might add one more cup of stock for a slightly thinner soup.)

Slow Cooker Vegetarian Cannellini Bean and Kale Soup with Shaved Parmesan
(Makes 6-8 servings; recipe adapted from The Italian Slow Cooker by Michele Scicolone.)

Equipment:
I used my Crock-Pot 5-Quart Smart-Pot for this recipe.

Ingredients:
2 T olive oil
2 medium onions, chopped small
2 T minced garlic (or less if you're not a garlic fan)
2 tsp. dried Italian Seasoning (contains oregano, basil, marjoram, thyme and rosemary)
2 cans (15 oz. can) Cannellini beans and juice (or use 4 cups cooked cannellini beans and a little water)
1 can (14.5 oz.) petite diced tomatoes with juice
8 oz. finely chopped kale, washed if needed (about 8 cups finely chopped kale)
4-5 cups chicken or vegetable stock (I used 4 cups, but next time I would probably use 5)
4 fresh sage leaves, or 1/2 tsp. dried rubbed sage
1-2 pieces of Parmesan rind to add flavor (optional)
freshly shaved Parmesan, to garnish (optional)

Instructions:

Heat the oil in a large heavy frying pan; add the onions and cook 4-5 minutes or until they are just starting to brown.? Add the garlic and Italian Seasoning and saute 1-2 minutes more, being careful not to let the garlic brown.? Spray the slow cooker with non-stick spray; then put onions and garlic into the slow cooker.?

While the onions are cooking use an immersion blender or food processor to puree the cannellini beans and juice, keeping them a little chunky if you prefer.? (If you're using freshly-cooked beans I would add about 1/4 cup water.)? Finely chop the kale (cutting away thick center ribs if you have them) and wash kale in the salad spinner if you're using garden kale.??

Put the pureed beans, chopped kale, chicken or vegetable stock, canned tomatoes and juice, and sage leaves (or dried sage) into the slow cooker with the onion mixture.? (Add one or two pieces of Parmesan rind if desired for extra flavor.)? Cook 4 hours on high or 8-10 hours on low.? Serve the soup hot, with strips of Parmesan shaved over if desired.

This soup will keep for at least a week in the fridge, and it freezes well.

South Beach Suggestions:
Even though they are a low-glycemic ingredients, dried beans are a limited food for Phase One of the South Beach Diet, but in a soup like this with lots of other ingredients you can have a normal serving, even for Phase One. ?
Nutritional Information?
I chose the South Beach Diet to manage my weight partly so I wouldn't have to count calories, carbs, points, or fat grams, but if you want nutritional information for a recipe, I recommend entering the recipe into Calorie Count, which will calculate it for you.

If you are a loyal reader of CoupleDumb, you may have noticed that we have gotten a little political lately. The truth is that we have always shared our views on happenings in this country from the very inception of this site. From the beginning, we had WTF Wednesdays. These posts use to get 3x the traffic of our regular posts. But still, we kept it to one day unless of course something completely ridiculous happened. After the first year, we tried to palliate our tone. Lee tried not to write ?Fuck? all the time and Paul attempted not to inflame the most tempered of personalities. This still brought us readers but we weren?t having as much fun.

Today, we are just being ourselves. If you do not understand why we write about politics interspersed with marriage and dating then you have missed the purpose of this site. This site is dedicated to pointing out the dumb things couples/people do to mess up their relationships. Most people divorce politics and public life with relationships but that is impossible. Politics are directly related to your relationship with your surroundings. Do you feel safe in this world? Am I in control of myself? Can I pursue my happiness without the government interfering? This is why we write what we write. This is all about relationships. If you still do not see that, it is because you have chosen to ignore the fundamental nature of our country or vote against your own interests.

We have a week left before the elections and a choice is clear to us. After the 6th, we hope you will join us in a minute of meditation to heal the country from this incredibly divisive election season. After that, we?ll tackle topics like in-laws, sex surrogates and male enhancement. And for those who have resorted to calling us names and hurling epithets because you have no sound argument except for ?nuh uh?, you can go fuck yourselves. Thank you for reading.

Comet Ridge Spuds Second Galilee Basin Well ... - LNG World News

Comet Ridge Spuds Second Galilee Basin Well

Brisbane-based coal seam gas explorer Comet Ridge announced that the second well in its current three-well Galilee Basin drilling campaign spudded at the Schmitt 1 location.

This well is being drilled in ATP 1015P in central Queensland.

Queensland Energy Resources currently holds 100 percent equity in the permit. Under a farm-in agreement executed between QER and Comet Ridge in July this year, Comet Ridge can earn up to 75 per cent equity in the Farm-in Area (FIA) through a three-stage farm-in process.

Schmitt 1 is the first of two wells that will meet the requirements of Phase 1 of the Farm-in, which will earn Comet Ridge 20 per cent equity in the FIA. Comet Ridge is also the Operator of the FIA which covers an area of 825 km 2 and is part of ATP 1015P.

The Schmitt 1 well is located 17 km SE of the recently drilled Gunn 2 well and 560 km WNW of Gladstone. The well is expected to reach a total depth of approximately 955 metres and will be cored to obtain key coal properties from the Permian aged Betts Creek Beds.

Following the drilling of Schmitt 1, the rig will move east to Cernan 1, which is the final well in the current programme and also completes the requirements of Phase 1 of the farm-in.

Samhain ? The Celtic New Year
Whither you use the Gaelic pronunciation ?Sow-en?, ?Sow-ween?, ?Sah-ween? or the Americanized version ?Sam-hain? (yes that is an acceptable pronunciation), it?s still the biggest holiday on the Pagan Calendar.

It?s the start of the Celtic New Year and honors the year that has passed. It is the time when the veil of forgetfulness is lifted between the physical world and the spiritual world. Where the dead are honored and communication with spirit can take place more than any other time of the year.

For pagans it?s a time of celebration, but it?s also a time of reverence and deep spiritual reflection for the past and the future year to come.

An article by the Library of Congress states: Pagans divided the year by four major holidays. According to their calendar, the year began on a day corresponding to November 1st on our present calendar. The date marked the beginning of winter. Since they were pastoral people, it was a time when cattle and sheep had to be moved to closer pastures and all livestock had to be secured for the winter months. Crops were harvested and stored. The date marked both an ending and a beginning in an eternal cycle.

Pagans follow a Lunar calendar and the day would begin at sunset. Celebrations for holidays therefore would also begin when the sun set and the moon rose. This is why we start our Samhain celebrations at sunset on October 31st and continue them through the day on November 1st.

Where many will say Happy Halloween, the proper salutation for pagans would be Merry Samhain.

Samhain?s History
Samhain, dates back to the ancient Celts who lived 2,000 years ago. Contrary to what some believe, is not a celebration of a Celtic god of the dead. Instead, it is a Celtic word meaning ?summer?s end.? and it?s a celebration of the Celtic New Year.

The Celts believed that summer came to an end on October 31st and the New Year began on November 1st with the start of winter. But the Celts also followed a lunar calendar and their celebrations began at sunset the night before.

Many today see Halloween as the pagan holiday. But that?s not really accurate. As the pagan holiday of Samhain is on November 1st. But their celebrations did and still do, start at sunset on October 31st, on Samhain Eve. During the day on October 31st, the fires within the home are extinguished. Often families would engage in a good ?fall? cleaning to clear out the old and make way for the new. Starting the winter months with fresh and clean household items.

At sunset on October 31, clans or local villages begin the formal ceremonies of Samhain by lighting a giant bonfire. The people would gather around the fire to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. It was a method of giving the Gods and Goddesses their share of the previous years herd or crops. In addition these sacred fires were a big part of the cleansing of the old year and a method to prepare for the coming new year.

During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, and danced around the bonfire. Many of these dances told stories or played out the cycles of life and death or commemorated the cycle of Wheel of Life. These costumes were adorned for three primary reasons.?The first was to honor the dead who were allowed to rise from the Otherworld. The Celts believed that souls were set free from the land of the dead during the eve of Samhain. Those that had been trapped in the bodies of animals were released by the Lord of the Dead and sent to their new incarnations. The wearing of these costumes signified the release of these souls into the physical world.

This photograph appeared in both the Chicago Sun-Times and the National Examiner. It was taken during a paranormal investigation in Bachelor?s Grove Cemetery on August 10, 1991.

Not all of these souls were honored and respected. Some were also feared as they would return to the physical world and destroy crops, hide livestock or ?haunt? the living who may have done them wrong. The second reason for these traditional costumes was to hide from these malevolent spirits to escape their trickery.

The final representation was a method to honor the Celtic Gods and Goddesses of the harvest, fields and flocks. Giving thanks and homage to those deities who assisted the village or clan through the trials and tribulations of the previous year. And to ask for their favor during the coming year and the harsh winter months that were approaching.

In addition to celebrations and dance, it was believed that this thin veil between the physical world and the Otherworld provided extra energy for communications between the living and the dead. With these communications, Druid Priests, and Celtic Shamans would attempt to tell the fortunes of individual people through a variety of methods. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.

These psychic readings would be conducted with a variety of divination tools. Such as throwing bones, or casting the Celtic Ogham. There is some historical evidence that additional tools of divination were also used. Most of this comes from writings recorded by Roman invaders, but there are stories of reading tea leaves, rocks and twigs, and even simple spiritual communications that today we?d call Channeling. Some historians have suggested that these early people were the first to use tiles made from wood and painted with various images which were the precursor to Tarot Cards. There?s no real evidence to support this, but the ?story? of these tiles has lingered for centuries.

When the community celebration was over, each family would take a torch or burning ember from the sacred bonfire and return to their own home. The home fires that has been extinguished during the day were re-lit by the flame of the sacred bonfire to help protect the dwelling and its inhabitants during the coming winter. These fires were kept burning night and day during the next several months. It was believed that if a home lost it?s fire, tragedy and troubles would soon follow.

With the hearth fires lit, the families would place food and drink outside their doors. This was done to appease the roaming spirits who might play tricks on the family.?The Romans began to conquer the Celtic territories. By A.D. 43 they had succeeded in claiming the majority of the Celtic lands. They ruled for approximately four hundred years combining or influencing many Celtic traditional celebrations with their own. Two Roman holidays were merged with Samhain.

  1. Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead.
  2. Pomona?s Day of Honoring, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of ?bobbing? for apples that is practiced today on Halloween.

Samhain to Halloween
With the coming of Christianity in the 800s AD, the early Church in England tried to Christianize the old Celtic festivals. Pope Boniface IV designated the 1st of November as ?All Saints Day,? honoring saints and martyrs. He also decreed October 31 as ?All Hallows Eve?, that eventually became Hallow?een.

Scholars today widely accept that the Pope was attempting to replace the earlier Celtic pagan festival with a church-sanctioned holiday. As this Christian holiday spread, the name evolved as well. Also called All-hallows Eve or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints? Day).

200 years later, in 1000 AD, the church made November 2 All Souls? Day, a day to honor the dead. It is celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels, and devils. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints?, All Saints?, and All Souls? day, are called Hallowmas.

November 1st or May 13th?
Some people confuse Samhain being originally celebrated in May with other pagan and early Christian holidays. It?s not clear where this confusion started, but it persists even today. To discover the true meaning behind the date, you need to look no farther than the name itself.

Samhain comes from the Gaelic word samain. ?Sam? ? summer and ?fuin? ? end. It literally means Summer?s End. The early Irish and Brythonic cultures believed the year was divided in half. The dark half and the light half. Samhain marked the end of the light half and the beginning of the Celtic new year or the dark half.

According to Christianized Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia (1979 Vol 12 p 152), The Druids originated the holiday. It was a celebration of Saman Lord of the Dead who was the God of Evil Spirits.

There is a good deal of debate about this origination as the Druids were not the only, or the first spiritual pagans of Ireland. It?s misinformation like this that confuses the history of pagan origins.

Some of the earliest archaeological evidence of the Celts come from their trade routes with the Greeks. Their culture can be followed with great precision from the 5th Century BC through the La T?ne culture. From these early records with the Greeks we know of some of their great festivals and in particular one of their biggest Samhain the new years festival. Certainly we can gain information from Julius Caesar who wrote extensively about the Gauls during his invasion campaigns in Ireland during 4th Century BC. Eventually Rome is sacked by the Celts in 3rd Century BC, around 390BC. The Romans in general wrote of their warlike inhabitants and many of their barbaric celebrations. Which included Samhain.

In most if not all of these accounts, Samhain is immersed in blood and sacrifice. Often in the earliest of times, those sacrifices were human. One Greek account states these early Celts sacrificed prisoners captured during a battle during their New Years festival of Samhain. In The History and Origins of Druidism by Lewis Spencer writes about the Druids stating they burned their victims in holy fire which had to be consecrated by a Druid priest.

The confusion of May to November 1st probably comes from the Christians and pagan Roman festivals. The Roman Empire was a pagan culture. During their reign they held many pagan festivals and celebrations, one being the Feast of the Lemures on May 13th. During this time malevolent and restless spirits of the dead were appeased and festival participants would attempt to gain the favor of the spirits. The feast covered a three day period that honored ?all the dead? with food, drink and sacrifice.

At the same time Pope Boniface IV consecrated the Pantheon at Rome to the Blessed Virgin and all the martyrs. This was celebrated in the west from May 13, 609 to 610. Pope Gregory III (731?741) during an oratory in St. Peter?s for the relics ?of the holy apostles and of all saints, martyrs and confessors, of all the just made perfect who are at rest throughout the world?, moved All Saints Day to November 1.

This is further confused by the early Irish churches who did not celebrate All Hallows Day in November or May, but rather in early spring on April 20th during the Felire of Oengus and the Martyrology of Talaght. A festival of All Saints was already widely celebrated in the days of Charlemagne in November. But it took a decree at the insistence of Pope Gregory IV to all the bishops, that the celebration be confirmed on November 1st.

These early similar celebrations come together around 835AD. The Roman pagan festival is over taken by the early Church, the Irish Church conforms its celebrations with Rome, and everyone seems to move their day of the dead to coincide with early Irish pagans and their celebration of Samhain on November 1st.

There?s no doubt, however, that the Irish festival of Samhain has always been at the end of summer on November 1st, and has been one of the prominent harvest festivals for Celtic pagans from the past and the present.

The Evolution Of Halloween
?Trick-or-treating? is a modern tradition that probably finds its roots in the early All Souls? Day parades in England. During the festivities, poor citizens would beg for food and families would give them pastries called ?soul cakes? in return for their promise to pray for the family?s dead relatives. The distribution of soul cakes was encouraged by the church as a way to replace the ancient practice of leaving food and wine for roaming spirits. The practice, which was referred to as ?going a-souling? was eventually taken up by children who would visit the houses in their neighborhood and be given ale, food, and money.

?Dressing up? for Halloween gets it roots from dressing up around the sacred bonfire during the original Celtic festival. Some suggest, this practice originates from England, when it was believed that ghosts came back to the earthly world on Halloween. People thought that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes, so to avoid being recognized people would wear masks after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits. In addition, these early English people, would place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter or cause harm to their homes. A tradition obviously taken from the ancient Celtic pagans.

As European came to America, they brought their varied Halloween traditions with them. Celebration of Halloween in colonial times was much more common in Maryland and the southern colonies. Primarily because Celtic immigrants settled more in these regions than in the north.

As the beliefs and customs of different European ethnic groups meshed together a distinctly American version of Halloween began to emerge. The first celebrations included ?play parties,? public events held to celebrate the harvest, where neighbors would share stories of the dead, tell each other?s fortunes, dance, and sing. Colonial Halloween festivities also featured the telling of ghost stories and mischief-making of all kinds. By the middle of the nineteenth century, annual autumn festivities were common, but Halloween was not yet celebrated everywhere in the country.

In the second half of the nineteenth century, America entered an age of mysticism. What was more often termed spiritualism. Metaphysical groups and clubs began to spring up throughout the Golden Age and the wealthier set of Americans. At the same time, America was welcoming a new group of immigrants, especially the millions of Irish fleeing Ireland?s potato famine of 1846. This new cultural influence brought with it a melding of Irish and English traditions, and a new Americans culture was born. People began to dress up in costumes and go house to house asking for food or money, a practice that eventually became today?s ?trick-or-treat? tradition. Young women believed that, on Halloween, they could divine the name or appearance of their future husband by doing tricks with yarn, apple parings, or mirrors.

In the late 1800s, there was a move in America to mold Halloween into a holiday more about community and neighborly get-togethers, than about ghosts, pranks, and witchcraft. At the turn of the century, Halloween parties for both children and adults became the most common way to celebrate the day. Parties focused on games, foods of the season, and festive costumes. Parents were encouraged by newspapers and community leaders to take anything ?frightening? or ?grotesque? out of Halloween celebrations. Because of their efforts, Halloween lost most of its superstitious and religious overtones by the beginning of the twentieth century.

By the 1920s and 1930s, Halloween had become a secular, but community-centered holiday, with parades and town-wide parties as the featured entertainment. Despite the best efforts of many schools and communities, vandalism began to plague Halloween celebrations in many communities during this time. By the 1950s, town leaders had successfully limited vandalism and Halloween had evolved into a holiday directed mainly at the young. Due to the high numbers of young children during the fifties baby boom, parties moved from town civic centers into the classroom or home, where they could be more easily accommodated.

Between 1920 and 1950, the centuries-old practice of trick-or-treating was also revived. Trick-or-treating was a relatively inexpensive way for an entire community to share the Halloween celebration. In theory, families could also prevent tricks being played on them by providing the neighborhood children with small treats. A new American tradition was born, and it has continued to grow.

By the 1990s, Americans have made Halloween one of the largest commercial holidays. Spending an estimated $6.9 billion annually on Halloween costumes, accessories, decorations and pumpkins.

Masks Come In All Forms

Samhain Traditions
To pagans the world over, November 1st, still marks the beginning of the New Year. To Witches and Pagans, Samhain is the Festival of the Dead, and for many, it is the most important Sabbat (Holiday) of the year. Although the Feast of the Dead forms a major part of most Pagan celebrations on this eve, and at Samhain voluntary communications are expected and hoped for. The departed are never harassed, and their presence is never commanded. The spirits of the dead are, however, ritually invited to attend the Sabbat and to be present within the Circle.

Orange and Black:
The colors of this Sabbat are black and orange. Black to represent the time of darkness after the death of the God (who is represented by fire and the sun) during an earlier sabbat known as Lughnasadh, and the waning of light during the day. Orange represents the awaiting of the dawn during Yule (Dec. 21st to Jan. 1st) when the God is reborn.

Jack O?Lanterns:
There is some debate about the origination of Jack-o-lanterns. One line suggests this custom originated from the lighting of candles for the dead to follow as they walked the earth. These candles were placed in hallowed out gourds and put on the ground to light the way.

Others suggest the practice originates from a Christianized Irish myth about a man nicknamed ?Stingy Jack.?

Stingy Jack and the Devil enter a pub to have a drink. Jack convinces the Devil to turn himself into a coin to pay for the drinks. But instead of using the coin, Jack slipped it into his pocket and next to a silver cross. The cross prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form. But Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year. And if Jack should die during that year, the Devil would not claim his soul. And the Devil agreed to these terms.

Jack again tricked the Devil. This time, the Devil climbed into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree?s bark so that the Devil could not come down. Once again, Jacked struck a bargain with the Devil. He would free the Devil from the tree if he promised not to bother Jack for ten more years. And if Jack died during those years, the Devil would not claim his soul. And the Devil again agreed to these terms.

Not long after this, Jack did indeed died. But because of his trickery, God would not allow him into heaven. In keeping his word not to take his soul, the Devil also would not allow Jack into hell. Instead, the Devil sent Jack out into the darkness of the world between worlds with nothing but a burning piece of coal. Jack placed the coal into a carved out turnip and has been roaming the Earth ever since. The Irish began to refer to Jack?s ghostly figure as ?Jack of the Lantern,? and then, simply as ?Jack O?Lantern.?

The Irish and Scottish people began making lanterns by carving scary faces into turnips or potatoes and placing them into windows or near doors to frighten away the wandering evil spirits. In England, large beets were used. Immigrants from these countries brought the tradition to America where they found the pumpkin, a fruit native to America, that made the perfect jack o?lanterns.

Tricks & Treats:
Treats also originated from an old custom of leaving cookies and other foods out for those relatives to enjoy as they shared this one night of feasting. The ?trick? portion of ?Trick or Treat? was an invention of the Christians. The tricks were supposedly caused by the dead who didn?t receive a treat of food left for them when they arrived at your door.

Costumes:
If you consider that the early pagans were shamanistic and in-tune with nature, it?s not hard to see them wearing animal heads and hides and dancing in celebration around a bonfire. This is exactly what they did to honor the hunt along with the harvest. Remember they are preparing for the winter months and giving thanks for stocking their cold rooms or cellars.

The Christians turned this into wearing costumes and masks to hide their presence from the evil spirits that walked the night during this evening when the veil between worlds is at its thinnest. Their costumes would be ghoulish so they would ?fit in? among the demons.

With the advent of marketing and corporations taking advantage of the secular aspect of Halloween, we now have little pink princesses and spider-man running around on Halloween night.

Spirit Communication:
The early pagans priests/priestesses and shamans would speak with the spirits that came to visit and share messages with their living family. These messages could be personal, making sure the deceased relative was ok, an opportunity to say good-bye or receiving a message for the coming year.

This practice didn?t pass through the Christian community and has more or less gone out of practice. But some pagan traditions and groups do still practice this divination messaging. It?s one thing I like to do after the rituals are over and the house has quieted down. I pull a Tarot card and divine a personal message for the coming year.

Book of Shadows / Magikal Grimoire:
Another practice is to review the year that has passed and close it out with a final notation in your spiritual journal during the day on October 31st and before rituals begin. After the rituals are over on November 1st, a new journal is started with plans or goals and spiritual insights to work on or research to bring introspection to your personal spiritual path.

The Controversy of Samhain and Halloween
Sad to say there have been many fundamentalists who are inciting ignorance and bigotry into the celebrations of Halloween. No longer is Halloween a religious festival here in the US. It has become commercialized as an event for kids to have fun, play dress up and be scared by ghouls and ghosts. It has become nothing more than a secular holiday.

Those who have tried to link Halloween to Samhain are also missing the boat. As Halloween, All Hallows Eve are Christian created holidays devised by the early Churches of Europe as a means to convert pagans to Christianity. The celebrations were indeed taken from pagan practices, but their purposes have long since been corrupted and are no longer pagan in nature. Right down to being practiced on October 31st.

Some one asked me if I cared that a nearby town was attempting to change Halloween from October 31st to the last Friday of each October. My response is why should I mind? Halloween originated from a Christian holiday, do with it what you will. Even if it isn?t recognized as a spiritual Christian holiday any longer, Halloween is still a time for dress up and trick or treating with kids and the whole family. The modern celebrations of Halloween do not take away or alter the spiritual significance of Samhain for pagan practitioners. Our Sabbat is still intact and still honored with reverence and in the traditional methods practiced by our ancient pagan ancestors.

Though we don?t make animal sacrifices any longer, there are some who will toss a steak into a bonfire as a symbolic gesture. The main focus of the holiday for pagans is still to honor our loved ones who have passed on and to share in communication with them during this time when the veil between worlds is narrowed.

So enjoy your Halloween adventures with the kids. When you return home and tuck the little monsters into bed, take time to celebrate your spirit and honor the true meaning of Samhain.
