FOREST HILL, Texas (AP) ? Rev. Danny Kirk Sr. greeted everyone walking into his Texas church on Sundays with a big hug and an "I love you." His weekdays were spent visiting folks in the hospital or mowing lawns and doing household repairs for members in need.
Parishioners, who described Kirk as a dedicated minister with a bubbly personality and a knack for remembering the names of his church's 800 members, are now looking for answers following his violent death.
Police in the Fort Worth suburb of Forest Hill said Kirk was killed Monday by a man who rammed a car into a wall at his Greater Sweethome Missionary Baptist Church, then chased Kirk and fatally beat him with an electric guitar.
Investigators said they don't know the motive or if Kirk knew his attacker, who police subdued by using a Taser but died after being taken into custody. His name hasn't been released.
Hundreds of people gathered outside the church, where crime-scene tape was wrapped around a small statue of Jesus near the wrecked car. Some hugged each other and cried, while others shared memories of Kirk.
"He really was concerned about our souls," Montoya McNeil, a church member for eight years, said as she wiped away tears. "You looked forward to being here. ... I'm not asking God why, because I know where he (Kirk) is, but we won't get those big bear hugs and those great sermons anymore."
Claudie Loftin, an associate minister, called Kirk a hands-on pastor who "didn't run around wearing a suit.
"He would wear jeans or a sweatsuit because he said he never knew how he would be needed to help, and that's what a pastor does. He was a man of integrity."
Forest Hill Police Chief Dan Dennis said the suspect drove his car into a church wall before noon Monday, apparently on purpose. The suspect got out of the car and began to attack the pastor in the parking lot before chasing him into the church, while the secretary hid and called 911, Dennis said.
Police arrived to find the suspect assaulting Kirk with an electric guitar from inside the church, Dennis said. An officer used a Taser on the suspect, handcuffed him and put him in the back of a patrol car.
By then, Kirk had died, Dennis said. A maintenance worker who tried to help Kirk was injured and taken to an area hospital. His condition was unknown.
Dennis said the suspect was found unresponsive shortly after being detained and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Kirk fought back during the attack, Dennis said, but it's unclear if that played any role in the suspect's death. An autopsy was being performed on the suspect to determine the cause of death.
Dennis said he didn't know if the suspect knew Kirk, attended the church or why he might have attacked the pastor.
Former Forest Hill Mayor James Gosey said Kirk started the church in 1995 in a strip mall before building the red-brick church.
Kirk was also an unofficial volunteer chaplain who occasionally counseled members of a local high school football team, Fort Worth school district spokesman Clint Bond said.
Loftin, the associate minister, said that church members were grieving but would recover from the loss "with the help of God."

East Coast storm wreaks havoc on presidential race
CELINA, Ohio (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama frantically sought to close the deal with voters with precious few days left in an incredibly close race as this year's October surprise ? an unprecedented storm menacing the East Coast ? wreaked havoc on their best laid plans.
Ever mindful of his narrow path to the requisite 270 electoral votes, Romney looked to expand his map, weighing an intensified effort in traditionally left-leaning Minnesota. Obama sought to defend historically Democratic turf as the race tightened heading into the final week.
Wary of being seen as putting their political pursuits ahead of public safety, the two White House hopefuls reshuffled their campaign plans as the storm approached. Both candidates were loath to forfeit face time with voters in battleground states like Virginia, which is likely to be afflicted when Hurricane Sandy, a winter storm and a cold front collide to form a freak hybrid storm.
"The storm will throw havoc into the race," said Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., noting that a Monday rally in his state with Obama and former President Bill Clinton has already been canceled.
Obama, preparing to depart for Florida a day early to beat the storm, followed up a morning church service with his daughters with a visit to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's headquarters, where the president was briefed before speaking by phone to governors and mayors in affected states. Hours before rainfall was expected to begin, Obama declared a state of emergency in Maryland, freeing up federal funds to aid local response efforts.
"Anything they need, we will be there," Obama said. "And we are going to cut through red tape. We are not going to get bogged down with a lot of rules. We want to make sure that we are anticipating and leaning forward into making sure that we've got the best possible response to what is going to be a big and messy system."
An opportunity for Obama to demonstrate steady leadership in the face of a crisis was offset by the risk that the federal government, as in past emergencies, could be faulted for an ineffective response, with the president left to take the fall.
Obama canceled campaign stops Monday in Virginia and Tuesday in Colorado to monitor the storm but planned to go forward with other events Monday in Florida and Ohio, with Clinton at his side. He planned to return to Ohio on Wednesday with stops in Cincinnati and Akron, followed by a Thursday swing through Springfield, Ohio; Boulder, Colo.; and Las Vegas.
Romney nixed three stops in up-for-grabs Virginia on Sunday, opting instead to campaign with running mate Paul Ryan in Ohio before heading Monday to Wisconsin, where the former Massachusetts governor has chipped away at Obama's lead.
"Let's today when we get home put in our prayers the people who are in the East Coast in the wake of this big storm that's coming," Ryan said in Celina, Ohio.
As Ryan discussed the approaching end of the race, the crowd erupted with chants of "nine more days."
Also vexing to Obama and Romney was the prospect that bad weather could hinder early voting and get-out-the-vote efforts, key components for both campaigns in the waning days of the campaign.
"Obviously, we want unfettered access to the polls, because we think the more people that come out, the better we're going to do," said David Axelrod, a top adviser to Obama's campaign. "To the extent that it makes it harder, that's a source of concern."
Boarding Romney's campaign bus in Dayton, Ohio, Sen. Rob Portman hedged when asked whether the storm could affect turnout in his hotly contested state: "We'll see. On early voting, it might."
Signs of the storm's enormity were quickly mounting. New York City prepared to shut down its mass transit system and ordered some residents to evacuate, while governors from North Carolina to Connecticut declared states of emergency. Airlines canceled more than 3,000 flights in anticipation of the hurricane, which has already killed more than 60 people in the Caribbean.
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, whose state is among the most competitive in the race, said intensive contingency plans would prevent the storm from undermining voters' ability to cast their ballots.
"We've got about 2,000 additional people that are coming into Virginia to help our power suppliers," said McDonnell, a top Romney ally. "The state board of elections is already planning for extended hours in advance for absentee voting, and it's now a priority, moved up to the same level as hospitals and police stations to have power restored."
Getting voters to the polls ? whether early or on Election Day ? is one of the few elements of the race still in the candidates' control with little more than a week left in the race. Although Romney and Obama are in a close contest for the popular vote, the president continues to have the upper hand in the handful of contested states where the victor will be decided. An Associated Press analysis shows Romney has fewer routes than Obama to reach the 270 electoral votes he needs to oust the incumbent, although the Republican has pulled even, or is slightly ahead, in a few pivotal states like Virginia and Florida.
With time running out, both campaigns appeared to be fine-tuning their map of the states where they're campaigning the hardest.
A senior Republican official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to disclose private deliberations, said Sunday that the Romney team was seriously discussing sending Romney, Ryan or both to Minnesota during the final week. The state hasn't gone Republican in the presidential race since 1972, but recent polling shows a tighter race there than most anticipated. Both campaigns are buying TV time in the state, but neither has dispatched a member of the ticket for a public event since Vice President Joe Biden visited in August.
In a flashback to the 2008 race, Obama's campaign announced that Biden will campaign Thursday in Pennsylvania, reprising a visit to his hometown of Scranton that he made during the final week four years ago. Pennsylvania too has been Democratic territory in recent years, but Romney has continued to contest the state, with an advertising assist from the Republican Party.
Eager to show energy and momentum on their side, both teams took to the Sunday talk shows to quibble over which candidate is faring better in state-level efforts to get supporters to the polls.
"Our people are coming out," said Stephanie Cutter, Obama's deputy campaign manager. "Ohio, Florida, the first day of early voting in Florida yesterday ? record numbers of people are coming out to vote. It's something like we've never, ever seen. And that's a sign."
Reince Priebus, the GOP chairman, pointed to recent gains for Romney that have lifted him to a virtual tie in most national polls. "The challenger always wins in a tie race," he said.
Axelrod, Priebus and McDonnell spoke on CNN's "State of the Union." Warner spoke on "Fox News Sunday" and Cutter on ABC's "This Week."

Being overweight and obese during adolescence appears related to an increased risk of all-cause treated end-stage renal disease (ESRD) during a 25-year period, according to a report published Online First by Archives of Internal Medicine, a JAMA Network publication.
Children and adolescents with high body mass index (BMI) often become obese adults, and obese adults are at risk for chronic conditions such as diabetes, which can mean future risk of chronic kidney disease and ESRD, according to the study background.
Asaf Vivante, M.D., of the Israeli Defense Forces Medical Corps and the Edmond and Lily Safra Children?s Hospital, Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, Israel, and colleagues examined the association between BMI in adolescence and the risk for all-cause, diabetic and nondiabetic ESRD.
Medical data for almost 1.2 million adolescents (17 years old) who were examined for fitness for Israeli military service between January 1967 and December 1997 were linked to the Israeli ESRD registry in a nationwide population-based retrospective study.?
"In this long-term nationwide population-based study, overweight and obesity at age 17 years were strongly and positively associated with the incidence of future treated ESRD, although the absolute risk for ESRD remains low,? the authors comment.
The study results indicate that 874 participants (713 men, 161 women) developed treated ESRD for an overall incidence rate of 2.87 cases per 100,000 person-years during more than 30 million follow-up person-years. Compared to normal-weight adolescents, those adolescents who were overweight and obese had an increased future risk for treated ESRD, with incidence rates of 6.08 and 13.40 cases per 100,000 person-years, respectively, the results show.
Researchers also estimated the association between BMI and treated diabetic ESRD and suggest that compared with normal weight adolescents, overweight adolescents at 17 years old had six times the risk for diabetic ESRD and obese adolescents at 17 years old had 19 times the risk for diabetic ESRD, according to the results.
?Although the results for diabetic ESRD were remarkable, with risks increasing six-fold and 19-fold among overweight and obese adolescents, respectively, our results also indicate a substantial association between elevated BMI and nondiabetic ESRD,? the authors note.

In an invited commentary, Kirsten L. Johansen, M.D., of the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center, writes: ?A study by Vivante et al in this issue of the Archives adds the development of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) to the list of adverse outcomes associated with adolescent overweight and obesity.?
?The association of obesity with ESRD is good news and bad news. The good news is that obesity represents a potentially modifiable risk factor, and control of weight and the hypertension and inactivity that often accompany excess adiposity could prevent or slow the development of some cases of ESRD and may potentially reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with CKD [chronic kidney disease]. The bad news is that it is not easy to address obesity,? Johansen continues.
?Although there is no evidence that it is ever too late to improve outcomes by increasing physical activity or shedding excess weight, the results reported by Vivante et al in this issue of the Archives highlight the potential advantages of starting early before chronic disease has developed and unhealthy lifestyles have become lifelong habits,? Johansen concludes.

On Feeling Married | Weddingbee
Today is our one-month anniversary. In some ways, I can?t believe it?s already been a month. In others, I can?t believe it?s only been a month.
One thing I know for sure is that I don?t feel different.
I can honestly say that our relationship isn?t any different now that we?re married. We?re the same people we were before September 29th, just with bands of metal on our left ring fingers and a marriage certificate in our fireproof safe. It?s changed my health insurance and even my name (well, not legally quite yet), but not who I am.
I wish I felt different. Marriage is supposed to be a transformative experience, something that changes everything about you. That just hasn?t been my experience. From day one of our relationship, Mr. T and I have been very committed to one another. I have never once felt that we would break up and neither of us has ever threatened to walk away. Maybe this level of security in our relationship is why marriage hasn?t changed anything. Maybe our marriage is too new for things to feel different just yet. Maybe things never will feel different. As long as we?re as happy as we are today, I?m OK with that.
