?Introduction

?????????? Foreign languages have been part of the Polish school curriculum for some time. Starting in the late 1940?s, the Russian language was adopted as the primary foreign language to be instructed to all students from the age of 11 and upwards, regardless of the kind of institution (Janowski, 1992, 43). A ?West European language? was offered as a ?second foreign language? only to pupils attending full secondary school, in other words, institutions leading to a school leaving certificate (Janowski, 1992, 43). From the 1989-90 academic year onward the learning of Russian ceased to be compulsory, and, at about the same time, the Polish government began to encourage the widespread teaching of West European languages in schools (Janowski, 1992, 50).

??Purpose of the Article

?The purpose of this brief commentary is to determine if Polish higher school learners are studying Spanish so that they can obtain jobs in Spain.

?New Training Initiative

?Fifty-five new teacher training colleges have been opened throughout Poland in support of the government?s policy (Janowski,1992, 51) and by 1992 two foreign organizations had endorsed this new training initiative by sending volunteers to Poland: 1) Solidarity Eastern Europe, a Canadian company and 2) the American Peace Corps. Dr. Butler has first-hand knowledge about the activities of these organizations. In 1991, he was recruited by Solidarity Eastern Europe to teach English at Rzeszow University of Technology, and while he was there had the pleasure to interface academically with a Peace Corps worker.

?Motivation for the Study

?The motivation for this work is Spain?s current ?open door? policy towards Polish workers. Citizens of Poland have the same right to be employed in Spain as Spaniards. Therefore, it is now more important than ever for Polish students to learn Spanish.

?The theoretical framework for this article is supplied by the general notion of the school as an organization and social institution.

?Research Question

?????? Are Polish higher school students studying Spanish so that they can obtain work in Spain? The predicted answer was ?yes? because it is relatively easy for Poles to be employed in Spain.

Student Answers and Results

????? On 12 Nov 2007 fifteen students who study full-time at AGH University of Science and Technology, Poland were asked to indicate on sheets of paper if they are studying Spanish so that they can secure employment in Spain. The results are as follows: 87 % (No ) and 13? % (Yes).Therefore, the predicted answer to our research question was not confirmed..

??????? Our findings have implications for Spanish language teaching at Polish higher schools. Nevertheless, it is recommended that more research be carried out, in the future, involving additional institutions

Israel-Gaza violence threatens protest movement (AP)

JERUSALEM ? Security has traditionally trumped all other concerns in Israel. Now some social activists fear a sudden spike of violence with the Palestinians could overwhelm a spontaneous and surprisingly strong summer-long revolt against the country's high cost of living.

A deadly ambush that killed eight Israelis, and subsequent Israeli airstrikes and rocket barrages from Gaza over the weekend, have abruptly shifted the country's attention away from the economic protests that were coalescing into a serious threat to the government.

Now the security situation is the center of attention again.

The question is whether things will ever shift back to the brief period marked by heightened awareness of social ills, but also near-giddiness over the prospect that Israel might become a "normal" country where money matters, not military needs, can take center stage.

For once the focus was high prices, not Palestinians, rockets and airstrikes.

Thousands of Israeli erected protest tents in city centers and hundreds of thousands took to the streets in mass demonstrations that became a weekly Saturday night ritual this summer, sending Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu scrambling to find solutions and keep his government together.

This Saturday, however, with cities in southern Israel under fire, organizers called off plans for a mass protest and made do with a subdued vigil of several thousand people in Tel Aviv. A man in the southern city of Beersheba, where a large protest was held a week ago, was killed by a rocket earlier in the day.

Stav Shaffir, one of the protest movement's leaders, said Sunday that protesters in several of the movement's tent encampments in southern cities were forced to seek cover in bomb shelters. Given this, she said, it was only natural to maintain a low profile while guns were roaring.

But she insisted the attacks would not derail the protests.

"The rockets are a short term danger," she said. "The disintegration of a society is a long-term threat ... we have to keep going. We can't let the security situation erode us from within."

Adar Stern, a protest leader in Beersheba, said the local protesters have moved their tents close to bomb shelters but have no plans to go home.

The protesters will not allow the government "to say that because of this we can't make changes and that we need a budget only for security," Stern told Israel's Channel 2 TV. "We want education and health and taxes, and a fair government, and I think this is no less important."

The protests, which began after a relative lull in Israeli-Palestinian violence, initially targeted soaring housing prices, but quickly evolved into a sweeping expression of rage against a wide array of economic issues, including the cost of food, gasoline and education, the country's spending priorities and a seemingly inexorable shift to American-style capitalism.

Israel emerged from the global financial crisis relatively unscathed. The economy has enjoyed rapid growth, and unemployment is at its lowest point in decades.

The country's economic strength has come at a cost: the ranks of the working poor have grown dramatically as wealth has become concentrated among a sliver of society, symbolized for many by a tiny group of increasingly high-profile tycoons.

In less than a month, the protests ballooned from a few tents in Tel Aviv into a nationwide phenomenon.

Despite the violence, the demonstrators are still calling for a million-person march in 50 cities across the country on Sept. 3.

That could be a test, and such tests of social campaigns have been failed in the past.

Israeli history indicates that social welfare concerns often get swept aside when violence flares up, particularly if the protesters make demands that could come at the expense of funding for the military.

One famous campaign by a group of Moroccan-born activists calling themselves the Black Panthers came to a standstill after Israel suffered devastating losses in the 1973 Mideast War. Another protest against Israel's high cost of housing ended when the first Gulf War broke out in 1991, as the country was hit by Iraqi missiles, according to John Gal, an expert on social policy at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

But this pocketbook protest could be different and could stay afloat even with the violence, economist Dan Ben-David said.

"We have never seen a protest like this before," he said. "We are in virgin territory."

Roni Barak, 52, who works at a food stand in Jerusalem's open-air market, said the impact of the attacks would be strong but fleeting.

"Of course the security situation will take attention away from the protests," said Barak. "When something happens, the nation unites around it."

But the protests, he said, "won't go away."

Libya rebels push towards capital to aid revolt (Reuters)

AL-MAYA, Libya (Reuters) ? Libyan rebels battled their way closer to Tripoli on Sunday to help fighters inside the city who rose up overnight declaring a final showdown with Muammar Gaddafi.

The Libyan leader dismissed the rebels as "rats" and said he would not yield. But his grip on power looked more fragile than ever after rebels, fighting for the past six months to end his rule, advanced to within about 25 km (16 miles) of Tripoli's western edge.

"We're going to Tripoli now," said Moussa, a rebel fighter raised in the United States, near the front line in the village of Al-Maya.

As he spoke, rebel pick-up trucks and a tank trundled down the highway which traces the Mediterranean coast towards Tripoli. Anti-aircraft guns, adapted by the rebels to shoot targets on the ground, pounded away nearby.

In a coordinated revolt that rebel cells had been secretly preparing for months, shooting started on Saturday night across Tripoli, moments after Muslim clerics, using the loudspeakers on mosque minarets, called people on to the streets.

The fighting inside Tripoli, combined with rebel advances to the outskirts of the city, appeared to signal the decisive phase in a six month conflict that has become the bloodiest of the "Arab Spring" uprisings and embroiled NATO powers.

"Gaddafi's chances for a safe exit are diminishing by the hour," said Ashour Shamis, a Libyan opposition activist and editor based in Britain.

But Gaddafi's fall is far from certain. His security forces did not buckle, and the city is much bigger than anything the mostly amateur anti-Gaddafi fighters, with their scavenged weapons and mismatched uniforms, have ever tackled.

If the Libyan leader is forced from power, there are question marks over whether the opposition can restore stability in this oil exporting country. The rebels' own ranks have been wracked by disputes and rivalry.

REVOLT PREMATURE?

Rebels said after a night of heavy fighting, they controlled a handful of city neighbourhoods. Whether they hold on could depend on the speed with which the other rebels reach Tripoli.

"The rebels may have risen too early in Tripoli and the result could be a lot of messy fighting," said Oliver Miles, a former British ambassador to Libya. "The regime may not have collapsed in the city to quite the extent they think it has."

But the rebel advance towards the city was rapid, and there was no sign of fierce resistance from Gaddafi's security forces. In the past 48 hours, the rebels west of Tripoli have advanced about 25 km, halving the distance between them and the capital.

Government forces put up a brief fight at the village of Al-Maya, leaving behind a burned-out tank, and some cars that had been torched. "I am very happy," said one resident.

The anti-Gaddafi fighters paused long enough to daub some graffiti on walls in the village. One read "We are here and we are fighting Gaddafi," another, "God is great." They then moved on towards Tripoli.

In Benghazi, the eastern Libyan city where the anti-Gaddafi revolt started and where the rebels have their main stronghold, a senior official said everything was going according to plan.

"Our revolutionaries are controlling several neighbourhoods and others are coming in from outside the city to join their brothers at this time," Abdel Hafiz Ghoga, vice-chairman of the rebel National Transition Council, told Reuters.

MESSAGE OF DEFIANCE

In an audio recording broadcast late on Saturday, Gaddafi -- whose location has been kept a secret since NATO warplanes started bombing government buildings -- made clear he had no intention of giving in to the rebels.

"Those rats ... were attacked by the masses tonight and we eliminated them," Gaddafi said. "I know that there are air bombardments but the fireworks were louder than the sound of the bombs thrown by the aircraft."

A spokesman for Gaddafi, in a briefing for foreign reporters, underlined the message of defiance.

The armed units defending Tripoli from the rebels "wholeheartedly believe that if this city is captured the blood will run everywhere so they may as well fight to the end," said the spokesman, Moussa Ibrahim.

"We hold Mr Obama, Mr Cameron and Mr Sarkozy morally responsible for every single unnecessary death that takes place in this country," he said, referring to the leaders of the United States, Britain and France.

SNIPERS ON ROOFTOPS

A diplomatic source in Paris, where the government has closely backed the rebels, said underground rebel cells in the capital had been following detailed plans drawn up months ago and had been waiting for a signal to act.

That signal was "iftar" -- the moment when Muslims observing the holy months of Ramadan break their daily fast. It was at this moment that imams started broadcasting their message from the mosques, residents said.

But the overnight fighting inside the city, while fierce, was not decisive. Rebels said they controlled all or parts of the Tajourah, Fashloom and Souk al-Jumaa neighourhoods, yet there was no city-wide rebellion.

In Tripoli on Sunday, the two sides appeared to be jockeying for control of roof terraces to use as firing positions, possibly in preparation for a new burst of fighting after dark.

A rebel activist in the city said pro-Gaddafi forces had put snipers on the rooftops of buildings around Bab al-Aziziyah, Gaddafi's compound, and on the top of a nearby water tower.

As he spoke, single gunshots could be heard in the background, at intervals of a few seconds.

"Gaddafi's forces are getting reinforcements to comb the capital," said the activist, who spoke by telephone to a Reuters reporter outside Libya.

"Residents are crying, seeking help. One resident was martyred, many were wounded," he said. It was not immediately possible to verify his account independently.

State television flashed up a message on the screen urging residents not to allow rebel gunmen to hide on their rooftops.

"Agents and al Qaeda members are trying to destabilise and sabotage the city. You should prevent them from exploiting your houses and buildings, confront them and cooperate with counter-terrorism units, to capture them," it said.

NEW YORK - Angry at himself, Prince Fielder had a few harsh words for himself.

That's not how reliever Tim Byrdak heard it. At least not at first, and that's where the trouble began.

Fielder hit a pair of RBI singles and later confronted Byrdak in a late dustup that caused the benches and bullpens to empty, and the streaking Milwaukee Brewers waited out a rain delay of nearly three hours before beating the lost-at-home New York Mets 6-1 Friday night.

"It's all settled now. It's cool," Fielder said.

Shaun Marcum pitched the Brewers to their 20th win in 23 games, giving them a season-high 7?-game lead in the NL Central. They closed out this testy victory at 12:51 a.m.

The Mets, meanwhile, set a most dubious record. They became the first team in major league history to lose the opening game in their first 10 homestands of a season, STATS LLC said.

Only a couple thousand fans were still at Citi Field at the end. Those who left early missed the Fielder-Byrdak problems in the eighth inning. There were no punches or ejections.

Order was quickly restored and Brewers reliever Francisco Rodriguez, traded from the Mets to Milwaukee during the All-Star break, put his arm around New York bullpen catcher Dave Racaniello as they headed back to the bullpens.

Brewers reliever Frankie De La Cruz plunked Mike Baxter in the ninth, without incident.

For a while, it looked as if this game would be a washout. The first pitch was delayed for 2 hours, 46 minutes because of an approaching storm that eventually brought rain, lightning, thunder and gusting winds.

The announced attendance was 24,470 and the Mets rewarded all fans with a free ticket for a game against Washington next month.

Brewers star Ryan Braun wasn't around at the end, either. He looked at strike three in the third inning, loitered in the batter's box and was eventually ejected by Campos. Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke came out to argue, too, injecting a little excitement into his 55th birthday.

"Short night, extra recovery for tomorrow," Braun said.

Marcum (11-3) improved to 4-0 in nine starts since losing at Yankee Stadium on June 29. He allowed one run in seven innings.

Mike Pelfrey (6-10) went five innings in his first start since Arizona's Gerardo Parra hit a line drive off his right elbow last Saturday. Pelfrey threw eight pitches in relief this week, just to make certain he was OK.

Casey McGehee hit two run-scoring singles and Yuniesky Betancourt broke an 0-for-16 rut with an RBI double.

NOTES: The 1913 Reds and 1987 White Sox each lost the opener of their first nine homestands. ... Mets SS Jose Reyes (strained left hamstring) ran for the first time since re-injuring himself. He's eligible to come off the disabled list Tuesday, but Collins says Reyes will probably be sidelined longer than that. ... Brewers LHP Randy Wolf (10-8) will try to win his fifth straight start when he pitches Saturday. He is 12-5 lifetime vs. the Mets. LHP Chris Capuano (9-10) starts for the Mets against his former team. He turned 33 on Friday.
