NASA launches next-generation communications satellite

Jan. 30, 2013 ? The first of NASA's three next-generation Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TDRS), known as TDRS-K, launched at 8:48 p.m. EST Wednesday (Jan. 30) from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

"TDRS-K bolsters our network of satellites that provides essential communications to support space exploration," said Badri Younes, deputy associate administrator for Space Communications and Navigation at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "It will improve the overall health and longevity of our system."

The TDRS system provides tracking, telemetry, command and high-bandwidth data return services for numerous science and human exploration missions orbiting Earth. These include the International Space Station and NASA's Hubble Space Telescope.

"With this launch, NASA has begun the replenishment of our aging space network," said Jeffrey Gramling, TDRS project manager. "This addition to our current fleet of seven will provide even greater capabilities to a network that has become key to enabling many of NASA's scientific discoveries."

TDRS-K was lifted into orbit aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from Space Launch Complex-41. After a three-month test phase, NASA will accept the spacecraft for additional evaluation before putting the satellite into service.

The TDRS-K spacecraft includes several modifications from older satellites in the TDRS system, including redesigned telecommunications payload electronics and a high-performance solar panel designed for more spacecraft power to meet growing S-band requirements. Another significant design change, the return to ground-based processing of data, will allow the system to service more customers with evolving communication requirements.

The next TDRS spacecraft, TDRS-L, is scheduled for launch in 2014. TDRS-M's manufacturing process will be completed in 2015.

NASA's Space Communications and Navigation Program, part of the Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate at the agency's Headquarters in Washington, is responsible for the space network. The TDRS Project Office at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., manages the TDRS development program. Launch services were provided by United Launch Alliance. NASA's Launch Services Program at the Kennedy Space Center was responsible for acquisition of launch services.

Ashley Judd getting a divorce. Does that make a Senate run more likely?

Ashley Judd, an-eighth generation Kentucky native, has lived in Tennessee and Scotland with her husband. Some Kentucky Democrats would like to see Ms. Judd take on Mitch McConnell in 2014.

Actress Ashley Judd and her husband, race car driver Mario Franchitti, are getting divorced after 11 years of marriage. We?re sure this is sad for both of them, but we?re going to jump ahead to the question every bored aide in the Hart Senate Office Building asked themselves Wednesday when they read the news: Does this mean she?s going to run for Senate in Kentucky?

Maybe you didn?t know that was a possibility. But it?s true: Some Kentucky Democrats are talking up Ms. Judd, an eighth-generation Kentucky native, as an ideal candidate to run against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in 2014.

Judd was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention this summer and is something of a political activist, so it?s not exactly like this is a wacky idea. Plus she?s been noncommittal in an encouraging kind of way when asked if she?s interested.

?I am incredibly honored and frankly overwhelmed by the outpouring of support ? that the people of Kentucky are interested in having me represent them is the greatest honor of my life so far and I am certainly taking a close look at it,? said Judd before the Kentucky Society of Washington?s Bluegrass Ball in Washington on Jan. 19, according to a report in Politico.

OK, then. Does her impending divorce indicate she?s more likely to do this, or less?

Over at The Atlantic, Michael Catalini thinks it means Judd will take a pass.

?Given this development, there?s a chance Judd won?t want to jump into a messy political campaign,? he writes.

Catalini adds that this is ?bad news? for Senator McConnell, since Judd would be politically weaker than other Democrats he might face. After all, Kentucky is a conservative state, and Judd?s own grandmother called her a ?Hollywood liberal.? Plus, while she was a DNC delegate, she didn?t represent Kentucky. She represented Tennessee ? the state she and Franchitti called home.

Social Media: businesses' new marketing tool - News - The ...

?

Businesses are breaking out of the boardrooms and signing on to Twitter.

A new study by the UB School of Management shows that providing a link between social media and making businesses more accessible to the masses could be beneficial. This connection demonstrates the increase in customer patronage and loyalty to a business. People in the field agree that ?humanizing the business? will help the relationship between companies and consumers.

Social media is ?redefining the way firms interact with their customers,? according to Rishika Ramkumar, an assistant professor of marketing at Mays Business School and participant in the research study.

Subi Ghosh, director of sales and e-commerceat Joyce Koons Honda Buick GMC and UB alumna, said businesses are attempting to change how they view social media and how it can be used to create more profit from their product.

?Nobody had really measured what impact [social media] had on business,? said Ram Bezawada, an assistant professor of marketing at UB?s school of management.

There is now empirical data demonstrating when customers use Internet sites such as Facebook and Twitter to connect with businesses, they contribute 5.6 percent more to a business?s ?bottom line? as opposed to those who do not, he said.?

Customers who participated in social media were also shown to buy more profitable items, as well as the business? unique and top selling products when they shopped in stores, according to Bezawada.

Though firms had been hesitant in the past to invest money into social media marketing, Ghosh said this new study may be able to demonstrate how effective this mode of advertising really is. She believes businesses will now invest more.

Ramkumar agreed.

?The doubts about the effectiveness of social media arise because the link between firms and social media efforts and return on their investment has not been established,? she said.

Ramkumar explained that 75 percent of Internet users are participating in social media and with numbers like these, companies have been looking at ways to connect with customers via Internet social media sites despite the lack of conclusive data.

In order to achieve definitive results, researchers involved in the study used ?actual behavioral data,? as opposed to survey data, she said.

The results of this study, while novel, were not altogether unexpected, according to Ghosh and Ramkumar. While other businesses may have been skeptical about just how effective use of social media could be, both were not surprised.

They agreed there has been enough evidence in the past suggesting that social media ? and connecting on a personal, functionally modern level with consumers ? benefits a business.

Allowing customers to get to know a business through a medium they feel comfortable with provides an overall more connected experience, which Ghosh has been seeing at her company.

?You are, quite frankly, abandoning your customer base by not giving them an avenue to first, get to know you and second, communicate with you in an open and social manner,? Ghosh said.

According to the researchers it?s assuring to have data to support what they already assumed ? making businesses ?more human? is effective.

The question now is what to do with the results.

?My co-authors from SUNY Buffalo, Texas A&M and Aalto University School of Business (Finland) plan to work on other aspects of how firms can harness the power of social media,? Ramkumar said.

Bezawada expounded on this, alluding to plans of investigating email ads and other Internet driven modes of communication.

Analyzing how customers interact with a business, and using this to create better relationships between company and consumer, appears to be the main goal of researchers.

Ghosh believes that pursuing this goal will bring in more revenue because it will make the company stand out. Competition between businesses is tight and in order to gain customers? attention, a company must appeal to them by building a relationship.

This relationship, according to Ghosh, will prove to be the ?key in today?s marketplace? for a successful business.
