Religious family survives being lost at sea

PHOENIX (AP) ? A northern Arizona family has survived being lost at sea for weeks after an ill-fated attempt to leave the U.S. over what they consider government interference in religion.

Hannah Gastonguay and her family will fly back home Sunday after taking their two small children and her father-in-law and setting sail from San Diego for the tiny island nation of Kiribati in May.

Weeks into their journey, the Gastonguays hit a series of storms that damaged their small boat, leaving them adrift for weeks, unable to make progress. They were eventually picked up by a Venezuelan fishing vessel, transferred to a Japanese cargo ship and taken to Chile.

Their flights home were arranged by U.S. Embassy officials, Gastonguay said. The U.S. State Department declined to comment on Sunday.

The months-long journey has been "pretty exciting" and "little scary at certain points," Gastonguay told The Associated Press by telephone.

The 26-year-old mother said they wanted to go to Kiribati because "we didn't want to go anywhere big." She said they understood the island to be "one of the least developed countries in the world."

Kiribati is a group of islands just off the equator and the international date line about halfway between Hawaii and Australia. The total population is just over 100,000 people of primarily Micronesian descent.

Hannah Gastonguay said her family was fed up with government control in the U.S. As Christians they don't believe in "abortion, homosexuality, in the state-controlled church," she said.

U.S. "churches aren't their own," Gastonguay said, suggesting that government regulation interfered with religious independence.

Among other differences, she said they had a problem with being "forced to pay these taxes that pay for abortions we don't agree with." While federal law bars public funding for abortion, state attempts to block Medicaid funding for organizations that provide the procedure have met with legal hurdles. Opponents say that funding allows those groups to perform abortions.

The Gastonguays weren't members of any church, and Hannah Gastonguay said their faith came from reading the Bible and through prayer.

"The Bible is pretty clear," she said.

The family moved in November from Ash Fork, Ariz., to San Diego, where they lived on their boat as they prepared to set sail. She said she gave birth to the couple's 8-month-old girl on the boat, which was docked in a slip at the time.

In May, Hannah, her 30-year-old husband Sean, his father Mike, and the couple's daughters, 3-year-old Ardith and baby Rahab set off. They wouldn't touch land again for 91 days, she said.

She said at first, "We were cruising."

But within a couple of weeks "when we came out there, storm, storm, storm."

The boat had taken a beating, and they decided to set course for the Marquesas Islands. Instead, they found themselves in a "twilight zone," taking more and more damage, leaving them unable to make progress.

They could have used a sail called a genoa, she said, but they risked snapping off the mast and losing their radio and ability to communicate.

They had been on the ocean for about two months and were low on supplies. They were out of food and were down to "some juice and some honey." She said they were able to catch fish, but they didn't see any boats.

Still, we "didn't feel like we were going to die or anything. We believed God would see us through," she said.

At one point a fishing ship came into contact with them but left without providing assistance. A Canadian cargo ship came along and offered supplies, but when they pulled up alongside it, the vessels bumped and the smaller ship sustained even more damage.

They were getting hit by "squall after, squall, after squall."

"We were in the thick of it, but we prayed," she said. "Being out on that boat, I just knew I was going to see some miracles."

They watched the surrounding storms disperse, and "next thing you know the sun is out. It's amazing."

Eventually, their boat was spotted by a helicopter that had taken off from a nearby Venezuelan fishing vessel, which ended up saving them.

"The captain said, 'Do you know where you're at? You're in the middle of nowhere,'" she said.

They were on the Venezuelan ship for about five days before transferring to the Japanese cargo ship, where they were for nearly three weeks before landing in Chile on Friday. The Chilean newspaper Las Ultimas Noticias reported the story of their arrival.

"They were looking for a kind of adventure. They wanted to live on a Polynesian island but they didn't have sufficient expertise to navigate adequately," police prefect Jose Luis Lopez told the newspaper. Lopez took the family's statement in San Antonio, Chile, where the Japanese ship had dropped off the family.

Mauricio Araneda, the governor in Chile's San Antonio province, told the AP that the family "had zero knowledge and experience in navigation."

Sean Gastonguay's brother Jimmy, who lives in Arizona, said he had provided a description of the family's vessel to the U.S. Coast Guard and exchanged emails with them once they were picked up by the first boat.

"There was some concern, but we were hoping for the best, and they eventually popped up," he said. He was able to keep track of the family with the help of the Coast Guard as they were transferred from ship to ship.

"We're all happy. We have good peace of mind now," he said.

Hannah Gastonguay said the family will now "go back to Arizona" and "come up with a new plan."

NFL Preseason Week 2 System Picks

Week 2 of the NFL preseason has seen several noticeable trends over the years, but bettors should use a bit of caution based on the opening week results. Week 2 has seen the majority of games go over the total in recent years, although the sportsbooks were quick to make some upwards adjustments in their totals after watching overs go 12-4 so far this preseason. Every single total on the Week 2 slate opened at least 38.

Over the past 10 seasons totals have gone 89-68-2 (56.7%) in Week 2, but the recent trends are even more pronounced, as totals are 47-31-1 over the past five seasons and 29-18-1 (61.7%) in Week 2 over the past three years.

Interestingly, it?s been the games that fall outside of the normal totals cluster of 35 to 39.5 over the past three years that have had the most success. Games with a total of 34.5 or less were a solid 5-3-1 (62.5%) against the total, while games with a total of 40 or over were a perfect 5-0. Games with a total between 35 and 39.5 were 19-15, which is still a solid 55.9%.

NFL Week 2 Preseason PicksAs of Monday afternoon, when the opening Week 2 numbers came out, there were more games with totals of 40 or above than were not, which is a big difference than in the past three years when there were just five games combined with an over/under posted so high.

Since you don?t want to be wagering on 75% of the games, a little additional digging is needed, which leads us to Mike McCarthy and the Green Bay Packers, who were blanked at home by Arizona 17-0 in opening week. That result continued a trend that has McCarthy?s Packers now 2-6 ATS and 3-5 in totals in Week 1.

But Week 2 has been different, as Green Bay is 5-2 ATS and 7-0 in totals under McCarthy. St. Louis coach Jeff Fisher also has had a tendency to go over the total in Week 2, as he sports a 6-3 mark between his time with the Rams and the Titans. All three of Fisher?s under were by 4.5 points or less, so it isn?t a case of him necessarily holding back. The Rams and Packers over 40.5 on Saturday is worth a look.

Other Week 2 coaching trends show Cincinnati 7-3 ATS under Marvin Lewis; Houston is 5-2 ATS and 6-1 O/U under Gary Kubiak; New Orleans is 5-0-1 in totals under Sean Payton; and the New York Giants are 6-3 ATS under Tom Coughlin.

The prevailing side trend over the years has been to take the home underdogs in Week 2. Though just 2-2 over the past three years, Week 2 home underdogs are 6-3 over the past five years and 12-7-1 (63.2%) over the past 10 seasons.

The only team to fall into that category in Week 2 is Washington +1 against Pittsburgh on Monday, although that could change depending on any line moves.

The Eagles and Bills both opened at -3 and were quickly bet up to -3.5, while the Jets and Kansas City both went from -1.5 to -2. The line movement in the Chiefs game is the most surprising, as Kansas City is on an 0-10 run in Week 2, although Andy Reid was 6-4 ATS in Week 2 with the Eagles.

Chris Huhne gets job with US energy firm

Chris Huhne

The disgraced former cabinet minister Chris Huhne has walked into more controversy after taking a job with a US energy firm, raising fresh concerns about the revolving door between business and government.

Huhne, who was released from jail three months ago, having served 62 days of an eight-month sentence for perverting the course of justice, was appointed as energy secretary in the coalition government after the 2010 general election but stood down in February last year after criminal charges were filed against him for asking his then-wife to take speeding points for him a decade ago.

Zilkha Biomass Energy, based in Houston, Texas, announced Huhne's appointment as chairman of his European business on its website. It praises him as "one of the pioneers in calling for political action to deal with global warming" and an "award-winning journalist". The statement makes no mention of his conviction.

On entering 10 Downing Street David Cameron promised he would lead the "greenest government ever" but as energy secretary Huhne was seen as fighting a losing battle against Tories intent on prioritising business interests over climate change. In 2011, he attacked his Conservative colleagues in government as "rightwing ideologues" and "deregulation zealots" for placing environmental regulations on a list of red tape to be considered for scrapping.

As a former cabinet minister, Huhne's appointment had to be approved by the advisory committee on bsiness appointments (AcobA). The committee noted that Huhne met ZBE representatives during his last two years in office but added: "This meeting had been for ZBE to brief officials and provide information, and had not included any request for finance or policy exchange."

It also said that he was not involved in "the development of policy, award of grants, or regulatory work that might have impacted on ZBE" and had no access to commercially sensitive information about any of its competitors.

It approved the appointment on condition that Huhne does not draw on any privileged information that was available to him as a minister and that he should not become personally involved in lobbying the UK government on behalf of ZBE or its clients until 3 February next year (two years from his last day in ministerial office).

Concerns have frequently been raised about the revolving door between business and government and that scrutiny of the potential for conflict of interest is not robust enough. Bernard Jenkin, the chair of the Commons public administration select committee, has called for AcobA, which is chaired by Lord Lang, to be replaced by an independent ethics commissioner with legal powers of investigation and enforceable statutory penalties, in accordance with a clear code of conduct.

On his release from prison, Huhne described it as a humbling and sobering experience and asked that he be allowed to "continue with my life". His ex-wife, Vicki Pryce, was freed on the same day, having received an identical sentence. Last month, she was stripped of the Companion of the Order of the Bath.

Obama wants to ensure all resources for veterans

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? President Barack Obama is pledging to make sure the government has all the resources needed to assist U.S. veterans, and he notes their ranks are growing as wars end in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Obama tells a convention of disabled veterans about his commitment to fulfill the country's promise to all who have served their nation ? and says that's a promise "for as long as you and your families walk this earth."

The president also said in a speech Saturday in Orlando, Fla., that his administration is making progress in reducing a big backlog of disability claims.

Obama says that with a new generation of veterans, he believes now is the time "to make sure our nation is truly ready, organized and structured to get this right."

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

President Barack Obama is set to tell disabled veterans that the government is making progress in reducing the backlog of disability claims.

He also planned to discuss research into traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder and suicide among veterans and troops, as well as efforts to help veterans earn college degrees or get the credentials needed to compete for high-skilled jobs.

Also scheduled to speak Saturday before the Disabled American Veterans' convention in Orlando, Fla., was first lady Michelle Obama. She and Vice President Joe Biden's wife, Jill, are leading a national effort to rally public support for military families.

A main concern for veterans is the staggering backlog of disability claims for compensation for illness and injury caused by military service.

The number of claims waiting to be processed ballooned under Obama, largely because the administration made it easier for Vietnam veterans who were exposed to the Agent Orange defoliant to get benefits.

The backlog recently has begun to shrink due to steps by the Department of Veterans Affairs, including requiring claims processors to work overtime and transitioning to a new computer system to help speed the judgment of claims. About 780,000 claims are pending. Currently, about 500,000 are considered backlogged, down from about 611,000 in March.

A claim is deemed backlogged if it has been in the system for 125 days, or roughly four months.

The Disabled American Veterans organization, which helps veterans access benefits, generally has applauded the administration for taking steps to address the backlog. The group also has been a strong defender of VA Secretary Eric Shinseki, who has promised to wipe out the claims backup by 2015.

Beyond the backlogged claims, Republican lawmakers have begun to hammer the department on the issue of patient safety. A congressional hearing in Atlanta this past week focused on poor patient care linked to four deaths. Another hearing is scheduled for next month in Pittsburgh, where five veterans died as a result of a Legionnaire's disease outbreak in 2011-12.

Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla., chairman of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee, said he hoped Obama would use his appearance at the convention to make a personal commitment to solving both issues.

In his remarks, Obama also was expected to reaffirm the administration's commitment to winning ratification of U.N. treaty encouraging countries to ensure that those with disabilities have equal rights and fundamental freedoms.

Led by Republican opposition, the Senate rejected the treaty last December, falling five votes short of the number needed for ratification.

Nadal tops Djokovic to reach Rogers Cup final

MONTREAL (AP) ? Rafael Nadal defeated two-time defending champion Novak Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (2) in a thrilling, two-and-a-half-hour match Saturday night to reach the Rogers Cup final.

The fourth-ranked Spaniard defeated Djokovic in the semifinals of the French Open this year on his way to winning the championship and will be aiming for his eighth title of the season but only his second on hard courts. The others have all come on clay.

"I said yesterday the only chance to win against Novak, the only tactic is to play very well," Nadal said. "And I did. I played a very high level tonight, I think. I played with the right decisions in the important moments."

In Sunday's final, Nadal will play Milos Raonic, who beat fellow Canadian Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4) to ensure he'll crack the top 10 in the world rankings for the first time in his career.

Nadal and Djokovic were playing for the 36th time, tying the record for matches contested by two players in the Open era set by John McEnroe and Ivan Lendl. Nadal leads the series 21-15, and with the win, narrowed Djokovic's advantage on hard courts to 11-6.

"It was very close match," Djokovic said. "Whenever we play against each other, it's always a thrilling match for crowd to see. We are both competing at the high level. We both want to win these matches."

Nadal, who is coming off a disappointing first-round loss at Wimbledon, opened a 6-0 lead in the third-set tiebreaker before converting on his third match point when Djokovic hit a return long.

The Spaniard has an ATP-best 47-3 record this year and will rise to No. 3 in the rankings, regardless of whether he wins the final.

Raonic, ranked 13th, will be going for his second title of the season and fifth of his career. He'll become the first Canadian to be ranked in the top 10 when the new rankings are released Monday.

"They're all very special, but I think the top-10 one stands out more just because it's a goal that I set this year," he said. "It looked a little bit difficult after how I played recently, but to do it here in Montreal is a relief and it's a happy feeling."

Instagram Update Brings Much Needed Video Importing, Straightening, And Android 4.0 Support

Screen Shot 2013-08-07 at 11.56.51 AMEver since the launch of Instagram for Video, there’s been one thing that was so obviously missing that we actually asked where it was during the announcement itself (well, during the Q&A afterward, at least): video importing. Up until now, any video you wanted to push into Instagram had to be shot through the Instagram app. If you had something sitting in your camera roll already that you wanted to upload… well, bummer. No longer. Instagram has just started rolling out version 4.1 of their app, an update that focuses on three things: Video Importing, complete with basic video editing allowing for clips to be trimmed and tweaked before being thrown into the mix Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) Support Auto-Video Straightening: If your video came out a bit crooked, you can now fix its skewing with just a few clicks When we first asked Instagram’s Kevin Systrom about video importing, he gave two reasons for its absence: they were still working out how to best handle editing, and they wanted people to be shooting Instagram videos through Instagram. The problem with that last bit, though, is that it’s… not really how good (non-scripted) video happens. The best?moments to share with video are the ones that you don’t expect; they’re the things that just so happen to occur while you’re recording, not because you’re recording. Capped at just 15 seconds, Instagram’s built-in video recorder isn’t very good at capturing these little bouts of serendipity. The update should start rolling out to both Android and iOS users today, so keep your eyes peeled.

How Long until We Have the Superhuman Exoskeletons from Elysium ?

In the world of 2154 the divide between rich and poor has been actualized in space?literally. In the ultimate gated community the wealthy and powerful shelter on a ring-world space station dubbed Elysium, enjoying the best in health care, among other perks, as everyone else suffers below on the overpopulated and environmentally trashed Earth. Protecting that privilege requires sometimes superhuman abilities?hence the use of special exoskeleton strength suits that enhance fight or flight.

Such is the world of Elysium in the new film by Neill Blomkamp, whose last sci-fi jaunt, District 9, featured aliens stranded and sequestered in South Africa. For this film opening on August 9, the director dreamed up a lush life built in space against the challenges of gravity for construction and permanent habitation as well as the exoskeletons, although there is little indication of how such strength suits might work.

Given that crude exoskeletons as well as thought-controlled drones and prosthetic limbs already exist, Scientific American asked neuroscientist and roboticist Charles Higgins of the University of Arizona whether the kind of machine-enhanced human abilities in Elysium are likely anytime soon.

[An edited transcript of the interview follows.]

How close to reality are brain-connected exoskeletons?
The exoskeletons we have today are rather primitive. Raytheon's amplifies the muscle movements of a person and allows that person to lift 500 pounds of weight as if it felt like 10 pounds. Yet, it doesn't tie into the brain. The Raytheon exoskeleton is very slow. It allows you to lift a very heavy weight but it's not faster than a human. You move your arm and then it responds to that movement. That's really going to slow it down.

There are exoskeletons designed to help the paralyzed walk but they don't interface with the brain or spinal cord. There's a huge amount of research in this area of neuroprosthetics. You will see that in the field in hospitals in the next 20 or 30 years. It's an advance over the wheelchair but it's nowhere near the technology in the movie. That is going to give someone who is not able to walk the ability to walk, not the ability to leap over 15-foot walls.

Matt Damon's character has something screwed into the back of his head and, my bet is, something screwed into the spinal cord as well. Motor control is actually in the spinal cord. If you have that kind of interface to the brain and spinal cord you could get superhuman reflexes. The technology to do that doesn't really exist today. It's not even up to the Six Million Dollar Man level.

What else might such exoskeletons allow us to do?
They might actually affect the aged population a lot. My parents are in their 80s and can't get around as well. I can imagine someone like my mom, who occasionally uses a walker, wearing one to get around with the tiniest amount of muscle power. If you wear an exoskeleton, maybe you can lift 100 pounds?more than you could when you were 20. It's a huge difference in mobility and independence. It might even work around something like Parkinson's disease. You can train the exoskeleton to ignore the tremors.
