Carys Bray: A little bit of Autobiography ~ Motherhood

I think my recent autobiographical musings (here?and?here) have been laying the foundations for this post. To recap, in a recent?interview?Zoe Lambert said:
Of course, the relation of the self to writing is more complex than the insertion of autobiographical experiences or facts or the creation of characters of the same age and gender as the author.
I've been thinking about Zoe's comment, particularly with reference to the forthcoming publication of my first short story collection. It's not really up to me to say what my book is 'about' - I won't ever be able to view it as a reader - but as I reflect on the stories, I notice frequent instances of parental ambivalence and perhaps, on an autobiographical level at least, some of that ambivalence can be contextualized by an understanding of a woman's place in the Mormon community.

I grew up feeling that my life was building towards the ultimate fulfillment of motherhood. I always pictured myself with a big family. Maybe statements like the one below played a part in my imaginings:

Woman and the Priesthood, Rodney Turner, p.222.?

My own family life probably played a part, too. I'm one of five children. Some people hate growing up in a big family, but I loved it. I loved my siblings, we had tremendous fun - when we were small we were like the five musketeers:?one for all and all for one.

Mormon girls are taught that bearing children is their primary purpose in life. A 2010 statement reads: 'Teach your daughters to find joy in nurturing children. This is where their love and talents can have the greatest eternal significance' (see full text?here).

The song below, 'I Want to be a Mother', is featured on a CD for Mormon children that is still on sale (it contrasts beautifully with the get-up-and-go, disco-influenced 'My Big Brother's Going on a Mission').

What if a woman doesn't want to be a mother? It seems that she is intrinsically bad: 'Faithful daughters of God desire children' (see full text?here).

What if a woman wants to be a mother AND something else? Tough luck: 'It was never intended by the Lord that married women should compete with men in employment. They have a far greater and more important service to render... Wives, come home from the typewriter, the laundry, the nursing, come home from the factory, the cafe. No career approaches in importance that of wife, homemaker, mother - cooking meals, washing dishes, making beds for one?s precious husband and children' (see full text?here).

I wanted to do motherhood the 'right' way, the way I'd been taught: milk and cookies and yellow balloons, the whole joyous, fulfilling experience. I spent several years in a slightly bewildered and occasionally desperate fug, wondering what I on earth I was doing wrong. Things were difficult financially because we had followed the advice of numerous Mormon prophets: 'Do not curtail the number of children for personal or selfish reasons. Material possessions, social convenience, and so-called professional advantages are nothing compared to a righteous posterity' (see full text?here). Consequently, I needed to get a job. I decided to work nights so I wouldn't be away from my children during the day. I felt guilty about working and I was so exhausted that I was frequently physically sick. My doctor gave me some medication to counter the sickness. I didn't tell him that on the nights when I wasn't working, I often lay awake, struggling to breathe past my bounding heart as I worried about things like eternal polygamy and how to quell the desire to snatch back some of my life from sticky, grasping fingers.

There were times when I attempted to give voice to my feelings, but other mothers were incredibly skilled at squelching ambivalence. I couldn't find anyone who was prepared to concede that parenthood was bloody awful at times, so I began to assume that there must be something fundamentally wrong with me. A thick, cotton-wool silence surrounded topics like postnatal depression and sleep deprivation. When I got a prescription for anti-depressants, I didn't tell my husband - I couldn't find the words, they weren't in the script of joyous, eternal motherhood.

Things got better.?When I finally started writing again (I stopped when I was 19, after I got engaged) I wrote about all the things I couldn't discuss.?(I talk about this in a?Threshold's?article on short story writer Helen Simpson,?here).?I wrote about harried, sleep-deprived parents; about shattered expectations and beastly children; about absent miracles and anxiety. After so many years of trying to carve myself into a complaint, and obedient woman, writing about the dark side of family life was a transgressive and extremely enjoyable enterprise.

My collection isn't autobiographical; I'm not divorced, I didn't buy my children at the supermarket and I don't live in a gingerbread house. But, as Zoe says, the relationship of the self to writing is complex and I wonder whether, among the drowning dolls and twilight supermarkets, the fictional parenting books and decapitated snowmen, there are tiny refractions of past anxieties: the place of women, polygamy, motherhood - I expect it's all there, somewhere.

I know, I used to travel to Disney World every year with my family too. Then my fiancee and I made it a tradition to go every year on our dating Anniverary. Then he asked me to marry him right in front of the castle. I really hope you get to go soon! It really is to most magical place ever and brings back all the happiness that has been in my life!

I?m so glad that I can bring just a bit of that into your life! Thanks so much for following and the wonderful compliment!

10 percent of all online traffic is bots, says study

11 hrs.

A new study by advertising company Solve Media indicates that one out of 10 hits on any given website is a bot or automated script. No matter how you look at it, that's a lot of robo-clicks.

"Bots" aren't actual robots sitting at a computer, of course. They're a kind of?specialized software that can do anything from clicking an ad thousands of times to commenting or registering for an account. They're everywhere; Facebook recently revealed that it has over 83 million fake users, many of which are certainly bots. There are also friendly bots, like the ones Google uses to index sites, but they generally try to stay out sight and not cause trouble.

Solve Media works in the CAPTCHA world ? those "type what you see" tests that purport to check that you're human ? so it has had many occasions to study bots'?behavior. Its 10 percent number is based on looking at more than?100 million unique visitors a month across its ad network for over a year, applying hundreds of what they call "attack vectors" to identify bots.

Solve Media's CEO told AdWeek that as the same bots get encountered again and again, the company gets get "more and more reputation data and a valuable understanding of who they are and what they are." In other words, they don't just count the bots, they get to know them.

Most bots are based in the U.S., they said, but U.S.?websites aren't actually the highest in bot activity, with around?16 percent off traffic attributable to them. In Singapore and Taiwan, Solve Media found bot rates of more than?50 percent. And it's rising: the company?says "aberrant traffic" rose 400 percent during the 18-month study.

That's bad news for advertisers who have spent their money on display ads. If half the visitors to a site are fake, that's half their money wasted! Solve Media, naturally enough, recommends its own platform for controlling such fraudulent activity, but if even a top-shelf website like Facebook has trouble doing it, the problem may be getting out of control.

HBT: Fister strikes out record 9 straight batters

Doug Fister is stone cold dealing against the Royals.

He just got done striking out nine straight batters, starting with Sal Perez in the fourth inning and ending with Billy Butler in the seventh. Six of them were Royals hitters caught looking. ?The Tigers currently lead the Royals 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh. (Editor?s note: Detroit won, 5-4.)

Nine straight Ks breaks the record held by Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens. The major league record is ten, held by Tom Seaver. That?s some pretty heady company for a groundball pitcher like Fister.

Of course, when you?re relying on the Tigers D, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Inquest into death of Jacob Michael in police custody in Runcorn to ...

27 September 2012

9.30am, Monday 1 October 2012
Daresbury Park Hotel, Warrington, Cheshire, WA4 4BB
Before HM CoronerThe legal official who orders a post-mortem and who is in charge of the inquest procedure. Nicholas Rheinberg

The inquest into the death of Jacob Michael will begin on Monday 1 October at the Daresbury Park Hotel in Warrington.

Jacob Michael died on 22 August 2011 aged 25 following arrest and restraint by police.? He had called the police himself in an agitated state after telling his family he had been threatened.? The police arrived at the house and forced their way into his bedroom, spraying incapacitant spray at him, whereupon Mr Michael ran out of the house and down the street.? The police pursued him, striking him with batons and restraining him before putting him in the back of a police van to take him into custody at Runcorn police station.

He was then left face down on the floor of a police cell for several minutes with police officers standing on his legs, where he died.

On the first day of the inquest, the jury will be shown disturbing CCTV film of Jacob Michael being pursued by police officers wielding batons in the street outside his home, being transported in the police van, arriving at the custody suite and then being held face down on the cell floor where he died.? More than 60 witnesses are listed to give evidence including Jacob?s mother, civilian eye witnesses and police officers.? The inquest is scheduled to last for four weeks.

Jacob Michael?s family hope the inquest will answer serious questions concerning the officers? actions when they entered his bedroom, the use of force by police in the street, the restraint itself, the failure to treat him as a medical emergency rather than take him to the police station, his treatment in the police station, and the overall attitude of police to a young man who was clearly confused, frightened and unwell.

Ann Michael, Jacob Michael?s mother said:

?My son called the police for help and they sprayed him with pepper spray and arrested him.? Two hours later there was a knock on my door by the police to say that he had passed away.? He was a fit twenty five year old man.? I want to know why.? I just can?t understand it.?

Deborah Coles, INQUEST co-director said:

?Yet again, we begin an inquest into a death following restraint in police custody of a young black man.? This is a particularly disturbing and distressing death, made all the more so by the existence of CCTV footage for much of his last minutes alive.? Serious questions must be asked about how a young man in distress came to be hit with batons, restrained, and disregarded while he lay dying on a police cell floor.

?It is vital both for Jacob Michael?s family and the public that this is a far reaching and thorough inquest into his death.?

Kate Maynard, solicitor instructed by the family, said:

?The family and the local community need to know how and why Jacob died in police hands. The family feels that the IPCC had not adequately investigated Jacob?s death and they now look to the inquest proceedings to get the answers they need?.

The family is being represented by INQUEST Lawyers Group members Adam Sandell of Matrix Chambers, instructed by Kate Maynard of Hickman & Rose Solicitors.

Why has it taken Britain eight years to extradite Abu Hamza?

British extradition proceedings against the militant cleric Abu Hamza, wanted in the US on terror charges, began in 2004. But only this week has an end to the legal process become visible.

By Ben Quinn,?Correspondent / September 28, 2012

In this January 2004 file photo, self-styled cleric Abu Hamza leads his followers in prayer in a street outside Finsbury Park Mosque, on the first anniversary of its closure by anti-terrorism police, London.

Eight years after the first steps to extradite to the US?one of Britain?s most notorious extremists, that legal saga is likely to come to an end next week should he fail in a last-ditch legal gambit to prevent his removal.

Yet even before the latest delay, legal deliberations over the fate of Abu Hamza???originally arrested in 2004 on a US extradition warrant for allegedly organizing a militant training camp in Oregon and assisting in kidnappings in Yemen ? had long tested the patience of many, as the case wound its way through British and European Courts.

While not mentioning the case specifically, none other than the most senior judge in England and Wales suggested Thursday that he was as frustrated as anyone.

The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge, said it was ?a real source of fury? to him that cases should take as long as eight years to go through the courts as different grounds for appeal are attempted, and that there was a ?great public interest? in allegations concerning terrorism being dealt with swiftly.

Human rights violation?

The comments by Lord Judge were welcomed by MPs as well as news outlets that have focused on the cost to the tax-payer of providing legal aid to Hamza and channeled anger at perceived foot-dragging by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which ruled back in 2008 that extradition could not take place until it examined the case.?

Hamza had argued that his extradition to the US, where he could face a life sentence in a supermax prison if convicted, would run afoul of European human rights prohibitions against torture and ill treatment.

Julian Knowles, a barrister specializing in extradition law, says ?a lot of the problems that have arisen here, and which have required litigation, are to do with just how savage the US sentencing system is and that gave the basis for Hamza to go to the European Court and say: ?I will be held, if I am convicted, in solitary confinement, for the rest of my life in very harsh conditions, with probably no possibility of parole. I am a disabled man and have no arms and there will be very little granted to me to alleviate that.' ?

In April, the Strasbourg court ruled there would be "no violation" of the rights of Hamza and a number of others if they were put on trial in the US. And on Monday, the ECHR rejected the men's appeal, clearing the way for a possible end to the long legal saga.

After failing in Europe, Hamza is making a final stand in England, where judges issued an interim injunction Wednesday blocking the extradition and granting a court hearing for an appeal. Hamza?s legal team must show that there is some new and compelling factor that has not been already considered by previous court hearings.

The Big Reveal!

It has been a long time coming, but the long promised and awaited kid-friendly vegan ebook is here! Rachelle Marsden, a Vegalicious Boot Camp graduate, has been working tirelessly putting it together, with a few of my ideas thrown her way. ?Since my little one is not old enough to tell me what her favorite kid meal is, it was best to leave the task up to the Mom of four cute vegan kids to handle.

I have read the book and even learned a few new things for myself. One of them, and it is my favorite: ?Learn to Like It? principle the Marsden family follows.

When trying new foods they never say ?I do not like it?, instead they say ?I am learning to like it.?

Don?t you love that?

The ebook is filled with Rachelle?s insight, since she too had to walk the path from a SAD (Standard American Diet) to a whole foods ?vegan diet, bringing her family along.

In the ebook you will find kid friendly breakfast, lunch and dinner recipes, as well as Lunch Box ideas?goodies you can pack for your little ones to take to school or the playground with them. Oh, and did I mention that there are dessert recipes there too, as well as smoothies?! Yes, some fun yummies you can make with your little ones.

My most favorite part of Rachelle?s book is the fact that HER KIDS helped her to write it ;) ! Now, that is a sure proof that kids do love to eat healthy, and that your kids will love these recipe too.

Hints to Master the Practice Permit Test Online

If you are taking your permit test soon, you definitely want to make sure that you are getting your practice in. One way to do this is to take a practice permit test online. Taking the time to do this, as well as other things that will be described below, you will get the help you need to easily pass this test, no matter what state you are in. As they say, ?practice makes perfect? and if you really want to make sure that you pass the test, the only way to really go about it is to get enough practice in.

What is the DMV Permit Test?

The test that you will be practicing for, known as the permit test, is the test that you will need to take in order to get your driving permit. Most states will just require a written test on the computer in order to take your permit test, but others may also have a road test, depending on the level you are at in a graduated driving program. This test will evaluate your knowledge on road signs, driving laws and other things that all drivers are required to know. Each state has their own test as each state has their own laws.

How Difficult is the Permit Test?

When it comes to difficulty, the permit test would be considered to be moderately difficult. It would be very impressive if someone went in to take the test and passed it with no practice or study. This is why it is extremely important for you to prepare for this test. One way that you can do it is by taking a practice permit test online.

Getting the Most Out of the Practice Permit Test Online

It is recommended that when you take the practice permit test online that you take it more than once. If you take it blindly, without any study or practice, you should not be surprised if you get a lot of questions incorrect. However, don?t let that dishearten you, as that is how you learn and how you will be able to get the most out of the test. The more you take the practice permit test online, the better you will be when you take the actual test at your local DMV office.

What Else Can I Do to Pass the Test?

There are many hints and tips that you can employ in order to ensure that you take the test and pass. One of these hints is to actually read the DMV handbook. You can get the DMV handbook for your state at the local DMV office in your area. It has every single answer in it that you can need, but you won?t be able to get the answers unless you read and study the book.

Another hint that can be quite useful is to make flash cards of terms or ideals that you find are tripping you up. Anytime you study for a test, if you are like most people, there are a few things that will be more difficult to understand than others. By using these cards, you can focus on the information that you need to know that may be tripping you up.

Finally, you can make sure that before you take the actual test, you get a good night?s sleep as well as have something to eat. You may be nervous about the test, but making sure you do those things will help to keep your brain sharp. If you have time, you should try to take the practice permit test online once more before the real test. You can find a great practice test here: http://practicepermittestonline.com/

Tax Division Back to Full Force as Detail Program Ends | Main Justice

By Elizabeth Murphy | September 28, 2012 9:24 am

The Tax Division?s temporary detail program, which was criticized by some members of Congress earlier this year, is set to end today as the division prepares to welcome back a full force of lawyers in Washington, D.C.

Kathryn Keneally (Photo by Elizabeth Murphy/Main Justice)

Fewer than 10 percent of the division?s more than 350 attorneys, both criminal prosecutors and civil litigators,?took 6-month details at various U.S. Attorney?s offices across the country, Justice Department spokesman Charles Miller said. They worked primarily?on tax cases, but also financial fraud and other finance-related enforcement matters.

The Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys proposed the detail program and Deputy Attorney General James Cole approved it in an effort to ease staffing issues at the U.S. Attorney?s offices during the department?s?hiring freeze.

But what had concerned lawmakers was the dispersal of about a third of the division?s approximately 95 criminal prosecutors to the U.S. Attorney offices at a time when the division had gained momentum in cracking down on overseas tax avoidance and other high-profile matters.

While most of the lawyers are returning to Justice Department headquarters, five detailees accepted full-time positions with U.S. Attorney?s offices. One has decided to become a law clerk and another is moving to private practice. Miller also said a ?very small number? of the lawyers will remain at their assignments for a short time to deal with ?unique circumstances,? including an upcoming trial.

Assistant Attorney General for the Tax Division Kathryn Keneally, who was confirmed by the Senate in March after the Tax Division lawyers had already applied for the detail program, said she looks forward to the lawyers? return on Monday.

?We are welcoming back a full force and we are happy to see that,? she said at a briefing with reporters yesterday about a new directive giving U.S. Attorney?s offices more tools to stop criminals from using stolen identities to steal tax refunds.

Keneally pronounced the detail program a success for both Main Justice and the U.S. Attorney offices, fostering closer coordination with some of the 94 federal prosecutor outposts across the country.

Some lawmakers had been skeptical. Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) said in March he was concerned about diverting a ?significant portion? of the division?s criminal prosecutors outside the division.

Keneally said the division is ready to deal with the growing threats to taxpayers.??We are committed here to the role of central tax administration ? that tax enforcement is consistent on a national basis,? she said. ?And also to be able to respond as we see specific issues come up in different places and see priorities as those arise to bring resources to them effectively.?

The new directive authorizes U.S. Attorney offices to prosecute the tax refund fraud crimes, estimated to cost taxpayers billions of dollars each year. Enforcement had previously been centralized at the Tax Division in Washington. Keneally said the detail program had no bearing on the issuing of the directive.

Easy Steps That Will Help You On Your Home Improvement Path ...

It makes no difference if you are a newcomer to the world of home improvement or have completed lots of individual projects, because it is sometimes tough to find something interesting to tackle. This guide will give you tricks and tips on how to start any type of home improvement project.

Make the walkway in front of your home a little nicer. If you take out your front walk and put brick pavers down, you will have a unique entry. This is a simple and straightforward job, but requires lots of manual labor. You can get rid of concrete by using a jackhammer. Once you are finished, you will be ready to get on with paving!

If a contractor offers a discount for using cash, he may be doing something illegal. You want to have a paper trail, and paying with cash prevents that from happening which can hurt you if he decides to quit the job midway through.

When doing any home improvement project, it is important to use the correct tools. Jobs can be done more easily and, more importantly, done correctly with the right tools. Ensure that you completely understand how to use any tool you are working with to ensure safety.

You can stop any floor squeaks with construction adhesive. While this requires you to complete the work from a basement or crawlspace, the result is well worth your trouble. Using a caulking gun, run a line of glue down each side of every floor joist so that the glue firmly secures the adjoining subfloor planks to the joists.

If you have a major project in mind, consider hiring a professional designer to help you out. The ideal project or renovation takes into account multiple non-decorative factors, including safety, efficiency and function. Professionals are well qualified to create successful plans and to adhere to local building codes as well.

A garden is a great, family-friendly project to improve your home?s curb appeal. Planting and tending to a garden in your front yard is hard to mess up, adds real value to your home, looks beautiful, and can even be a family bonding opportunity.

Windows with clear glass can lead to your home losing nearly a fifth of its heat. Adding double glazed windows can significantly reduce this loss. It will save you on your power bills and will increase the comfort in your home when the weather is extreme outside.

Try to take care of difficult and pricy repairs before moving into a home. Save cosmetic type projects such as beautifying the bathroom or finishing out the basement until later. You can take care of those things after moving in.

Add weather stripping to doors and windows to give your home?s energy efficiency a big boost. This is a cheap method to make your home more energy efficient. The difference will also be pleasantly noticeable.

Figure out how long you plan to stay in your home before tackling projects. If you plan to move in less than five years, it makes no sense to spend a lot of money on huge changes. Repairs should be made, but skip the upgrades; they can be done by the next owner.

If you think that you need to spruce up the look of the outside of the house, think about putting in a pergola. This beautiful addition to gardens has become very popular with homeowners for its elegant, natural appearance and the shaded charm it brings. You can get a do-it-yourself kit, a few friends and have it completed before the weekend is over.

When planning any home improvement project, it is important to consider how any unwanted debris will be disposed of. Large projects will make for a lot of debris that needs to be hauled away, and you need to know how to move it off your property easily and safely. At the beginning of any project, have a designated area for debris to be collected.

Another good way to show off and enhance your landscaping is to add mature, flowering plants rather than smaller seedlings. Mature flowers and plants add a quick pop of color and texture to the exterior of your home and boost curb appeal instantly. Seedlings are fragile and take time to mature, meaning it could be months before you see any benefit. This is especially useful if you are selling your home, as it makes your yard look ready-to-go, requiring no effort on the part of the buyer.

If you find a leak under a sink or in your tap, don?t fix it yourself. Put a large container under the leak to catch the water and call a plumber.

Nice View

In the real estate market, a beautiful view can often command a significant premium. While creating a nice view might be an investment to you, it is sometimes considered an added cost for your own enjoyment. Those looking to buy your home may not see this as a nice view.

Staining the floors of your basement makes for an easy facelift. Stained concrete floors are not as expensive as replacing them; the look is also very stylish. Stains also make the concrete stronger and easier to clean. Look for stains to add shine and lustre. It increases the value of the room to the eye, too.

Soundproofing inside interior walls makes a good investment in any home. It may not be feasible to soundproof every room, but there are areas that you could concentrate on. The most important areas for soundproofing are bedrooms, bathrooms and equipment rooms. The kitchen could also use some soundproofing if it?s fairly enclosed.

Taking on a new home improvement project can be a daunting experience. The information shared here can help you successfully tackle any project you set your mind to

The?Curiosity rover's latest Mars photo?captured the planet's largest Martian moon, Phobos, during a Martian evening, revealing the satellite as a faint crescent moon.

"Moon Over Mars: I snapped a pic of one of Mars' moons, Phobos, in the twilight sky over Gale crater," NASA's Curiosity team announced on the mission's Twitter page @MarsCuriosity, writing as the rover itself, on Wednesday (Sept. 26) ? the same day Curiosity made its longest drive yet.

The photo shows Phobos as a faint white crescent that almost blends in with the Martian sky. A black blemish also appears in the image, but is merely the result of a bad pixel in the image data, rover officials said.

"When you send images from 179 million miles away, stuff happens," they added via Twitter.?

The new photo of Phobos is Curiosity's latest view of Martian moons from the surface of the Red Planet. Earlier this month, Curiosity snapped photos of Phobos as it crossed part of the sun, creating a partial?solar eclipse on Mars.

Mars has two moons, Phobos and Deimos, both of which are much smaller than Earth's moon. Phobos is about 14 miles wide (22 kilometers), making it the largest Martian satellite. Deimos is about 9.3 miles across (15 km) at its largest point and is farther from Mars than Phobos.?

The Curiosity rover's Phobos photos are just part of the science work the car-size robot has been performing on Mars. The rover landed inside the planet's vast Gale Crater on Aug. 5 and is currently driving toward its first science destination, a location called Glenelg.

On Wednesday, Curiosity drove 160 feet (48.9 meters) closer to Glenelg, marking its longest single drive of its mission so far. To date, the rover has covered about a quarter-mile (416 meters) on Mars.

NASA's?Mars rover Curiosity?is expected to spend at least two years exploring Gale Crater to determine if the region could have ever supported microbial life. Mission scientists plan to drive the rover up a 3-mile (5-km) mountain ? Mount Sharp ?that rises from the crater's center.

NASA will hold a press conference today at 2 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT) today to update the media and public on Curiosity's progress on Mars. You can watch the press conference?live on SPACE.com here.

Calif. man behind anti-Muslim film ordered jailed

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The surrounding mystery of the man behind the crudely produced anti-Islamic video that sparked violence in the Middle East took a strange turn after he appeared in court and gave yet another name in a string of aliases.

Arrested on Thursday after authorities said he violated his probation from a 2010 check fraud conviction, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula told a judge his real name was Mark Basseley Youseff. He said he'd been using that name since 2002, even though he went by Nakoula in his fraud case.

The full story about Nakoula and the video "Innocence of Muslims" still isn't known more than two weeks after violence erupted in Egypt and Libya, where Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others were killed in Benghazi. Violence related to the film has since spread, killing dozens more.

Citing a lengthy pattern of deception and the potential to flee, U.S. Central District Chief Magistrate Judge Suzanne Segal ordered Nakoula to remain in prison without bond until another judge can hold a hearing to determine if he broke the terms of his probation.

"The court has a lack of trust in this defendant at this time," Segal said.

Prosecutors noted Nakoula had eight probation violations, including lying to his probation officers and using aliases. He could face new charges that carry a maximum two-year prison term.

After his 2010 conviction, Nakoula was sentenced to 21 months in prison and was barred from using computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer, though prosecutors said none of the violations involved the Internet. He also wasn't supposed to use any name other than his true legal name without the prior written approval of his probation officer.

Three names, however, have been associated with Nakoula this month alone.

The movie was made last year by a man who called himself Sam Bacile. After the violence erupted, a man who identified himself as Bacile spoke to media outlets including The Associated Press, took credit for the film and said it was meant to portray the truth about Muhammad and Islam, which he called a cancer.

The next day, the AP determined there was no Bacile and linked the identity to Nakoula, a former gas station owner with a drug conviction and a history of using aliases. Federal authorities later confirmed there was no Bacile and that Nakoula was behind the movie.

Some of the false statements in Nakoula's alleged probation violations had to do with the film, Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Dugdale said. Nakoula told probation officials his role was just writing the script, and denied going by the name Sam Bacile in connection with the film, Dugdale said.

Before going into hiding, Nakoula acknowledged to the AP that he was involved with the film, but said he only worked on logistics and management.

Nakoula, a Christian originally from Egypt, then went into hiding after he was identified as the man behind the trailer, which depicts Muhammad as a womanizer, religious fraud and child molester. He met with federal probation officials two weeks ago, led out of his home in suburban Cerritos in the middle of the night, flanked by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and cloaked in heavy clothing to protect his identity.

The public got their first good look at Nakoula on Thursday, although the news media was banned from the courtroom and reporters had to watch the proceedings on a TV in a nearby courthouse.

Nakoula wore beige pants and a collared shirt when he was led into the courtroom handcuffed and shackled. He appeared relaxed, smiling at one point before the hearing and conferring with his attorney.

Nakoula's attorney Steven Seiden sought to have the hearing closed and his client released on $10,000 bail. He argued Nakoula has checked in with his probation officer frequently and made no attempts to leave Southern California.

Seiden was concerned that Nakoula would be in danger in federal prison because of Muslim inmates, but prosecutors said he likely would be placed in protective custody.

Lawrence Rosenthal, a constitutional and criminal law professor at Chapman University School of Law in Orange, said it was "highly unusual" for a judge to order immediate detention on a probation violation for a nonviolent crime, but if there were questions about Nakoula's identity it was more likely.

"When the prosecution doesn't really know who they're dealing with, it's much easier to talk about flight," Rosenthal said. "I've prosecuted individuals who'd never given a real address. You don't know who you're dealing with, and you're just going to have very limited confidence about their ability to show up in court."

Enraged Muslims have demanded punishment for Nakoula, and a Pakistani cabinet minister has offered a $100,000 bounty to anyone who kills him.

First Amendment advocates have defended Nakoula's right to make the film while condemning its content. And federal officials likely will face criticism from those who say Nakoula's free speech rights were trampled by his arrest on a probation violation.

In arguing that Nakoula is a possible flight risk, Dugdale said Nakoula couldn't even reveal something as fundamental as his real name.

"He's a person who simply can't be trusted," he said.

Soil heat shield concept passes arc jet testing

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Arc jet testing under intense temperatures and pressures showed that heat shields made from the soil of other worlds will stand up to the conditions they would encounter plunging through Earth's atmosphere, researchers said this week.

Michael Hogue, a researcher at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, led a team of engineers as they exposed samples of heat shield materials to an intense plasma wind known as an arc jet at Ames research Center earlier this week. The 2-inch by 4-inch shaped blocks were made from different mixtures of soil simulating lunar and Martian regolith.

The scientists recorded no burn-through or uneven erosion of the surface on any of the samples through a series of progressively higher energy levels, Hogue said.

The test results mean the idea of making heat shields out of the soils, or regolith, of other planets and moons remains feasible, Hogue said.

For mission planners in the future, the concept could produce a windfall of weight savings because spacecraft could make their own shielding on planets and moons where gravity is so low that it would take little energy to lift even a massive heat shield from the surface into orbit. Lifting material from Earth's surface and gravity well requires a great deal of thrust and cost, by contrast.

Applications could include an uncrewed spacecraft molding a heat shield on a Martian moon and then riding it through the Martian atmosphere to make a landing. The same principle could be applied to a large habitation module for astronauts or any number of similar missions.

The technology remains in its infancy, but with strong test results, Hogue and his team will be able to complete a report by the end of November and apply for continued funding to develop the innovation further.

Researchers uncover biochemical events needed to maintain erection

Thursday, September 27, 2012

For two decades, scientists have known the biochemical factors that trigger penile erection, but not what's needed to maintain one. Now an article by Johns Hopkins researchers, scheduled to be published this week by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), uncovers the biochemical chain of events involved in that process. The information, they say, may lead to new therapies to help men who have erectile dysfunction.

"We've closed a gap in our knowledge," says Arthur Burnett, M.D., professor of urology at Johns Hopkins Medicine and the senior author of the study article. "We knew that the release of the chemical nitric oxide, a neurotransmitter that is produced in nerve tissue, triggers an erection by relaxing muscles that allow blood to fill the penis. We thought that was just the initial stimulus. In our research, we wanted to understand what happens next to enable that erection to be maintained."

In a study of mice, Burnett and his colleagues found a complex positive feedback loop in the penile nerves that triggers waves of nitric oxide to keep the penis erect. He says they now understand that the nerve impulses that originate from the brain and from physical stimulation are sustained by a cascade of chemicals that are generated during the erection following the initial release of nitric oxide. "The basic biology of erections at the rodent level is the same as in humans," he says.

The key finding is that after the initial release of nitric oxide, a biochemical process called phosphorylation takes place to continue its release and sustain the erection.

In a landmark study published in the journal Science in 1992, Burnett and his Johns Hopkins co-author, Solomon S. Snyder, M.D., professor of neuroscience (who is also an author on the current study), showed for the first time that nitric oxide is produced in penile tissue. Their study demonstrated the key role of nitric oxide as a neurotransmitter responsible for triggering erections.

"Now, 20 years later, we know that nitric oxide is not just a blip here or there, but instead it initiates a cyclic system that continues to produce waves of the neurotransmitter from the penile nerves," says Burnett.

With this basic biological information, it may be possible, according to Burnett, to develop new medical approaches to help men with erection problems caused by such factors as diabetes, vascular disease or nerve damage from surgical procedures. Such new approaches could be used to intervene earlier in the arousal process than current medicines approved to treat erectile dysfunction.

In particular, Burnett says, "The target for new therapies would be the protein kinase A (PKA) phosphorylation of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS). Now that we know the mechanism for causing the 'activated' form of nNOS in penile nerves, we can develop agents that exploit this mechanism to help with erection difficulties."

One of the agents studied by the researchers was forskolin, an herbal compound that has been used to relax muscle and widen heart vessels. They found that forskolin also ramps up nerves and can help keep nitric oxide flowing to maintain an erection.

"It has been a 20-year journey to complete our understanding of this process," says Snyder. "Now it may be possible to develop therapies to enhance or facilitate the process."

Todd Akin Backed by Senate Conservatives Fund

Todd Akin's list of allies has grown yet again.

Akin this morning won the endorsement of the Senate Conservatives Fund (SCF), the PAC founded by influential conservative Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina. DeMint himself endorsed Akin Wednesday in a joint announcement with former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

SCF has been considering the move for several days. It polled supporters via e-mail Wednesday, asking how much they'd be willing to donate in support of Akin's candidacy.

"Over 8,000 votes were cast and 93% of you said the Senate Conservatives Fund (SCF) should endorse Todd Akin (R-MO) given that he's the Republican candidate, the race is competitive, and the outcome could determine control of the Senate," Executive Director Matt Hoskins wrote in a follow-up email today.

SCF supporters pledged a total of $290,000 on Akin's behalf, Hoskins wrote. The group is also asking supporters to give directly to Akin's campaign, with a goal of raising $100,000 for him before this Federal Election Commission fundraising period ends Sunday.

A cascade of Republicans and Republican groups have backed Akin since Tuesday evening, when his deadline to withdraw from the race expired at 5 p.m. CT. The list now includes the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which had called on Akin to withdraw from the race; the Missouri Republican Party, which had distanced itself from the candidate, according to Akin's campaign; and former GOP presidential candidate and Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

Akin has been outspent by his Democratic opponent, Sen. Claire McCaskill, but outside groups such as SCF could help him catch up. The group Freedom's Defense Fund has reportedly dedicated $250,000 to TV, radio and Internet ads in Missouri. If SCF supporters follow through on their pledges, Akin will see at least $500,000 pour into the state.

This post originally identified SCT as "Demint's" PAC. DeMint officially separated himself from the PAC in July.

An Austrian artist has coerced some hermit crabs into adopting shells created by a 3-D printer ? shells in the shape of the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Hermit crabs don't actually make their own shells, but rather?find ones that once belonged to snails and other creatures. But population imbalances and other ecological troubles have led to a shortage of shells, and consequently hermit crabs have moved into things like beer cans and other trash.

A project started in 2011 called Project Shellter aimed to use Makerbot printers to create perfect little 3-D printed shells, and has successfully made a number of homes for stricken crabs. Austrian?art student Peter Moosgaard decided to take things a step further and use the shell as a platform for expression. His crabs get shells that look like the Guggenheim.

He created the aquarium installation?as part of his program at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, and it's an ongoing work because the crabs constantly grow out of their "shells." New ones must be printed, and in the meantime the crabs in the tank compete over the existing ones.

You can see one crab living happily in its Guggenheim below, but be sure to check out the more artfully composed videos Moosgaard has?up on his Vimeo channel.
