Woman known as Sea Hag accused of fatally shooting man who refused to give her a beer

Dukeshire (Monroe County Sheriff's Office)

A Florida Keys woman known as Sea Hag has been charged with fatally shooting a man who refused to give her a beer.

Carolyn Dukeshire, 62, was arrested late Sunday, charged with first-degree murder.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Dukeshire shot 64-year-old Martin Mazur five times after Mazur denied her a beer.?Casey Whippo, who was with Mazur at the time of the shooting told police they had just returned from dinner to Mazur's house in Conch Key, were sitting outside and had just opened a beer. Dukeshire walked around the side of the house and asked if she could have one, the witness told investigators. When Mazur refused, he said, she opened fire, shooting him in the abdomen, twice in the back and once in the wrist.

After a struggle, she tossed the gun into a canal and sat down before police arrived. Mazur was rushed to Fisherman's Hospital in Marathon, Fla., where he later died.

According to KeysNews.com, Dukeshire, a fisherwoman, is being held without bond in the Monroe County Detention Center.

The Baltimore Snacker: Snacking State-by-State: South Dakota II - If ...

South Dakota is one of the few states with its own official state dessert, cake. ?Or should I say?kuchen, which?is German for "cake". ?With its large German American population, South Dakota's specifically German cake should be of little surprise as an official dessert.

Official Name:?State of South Dakota
State Nickname:?The Mount Rushmore State
Admission to the US:?November 2, 1889 (#40)
Capital:?Pierre (8th largest)
Other Important Cities:?Sioux Falls (largest), Rapid City (2nd largest), Aberdeen (3rd largest)
Region:?Midwest, Great Plains; West North Central (US Census)
RAFT Nations:?Bison;?Pinyon Nut
Bordered by:?North Dakota (north), Minnesota (east), Nebraska (south), Wyoming & Montana (west)
Official State Foods and Edible Things:?fry bread (bread), honey bee (insect, for the honey), kuchen (dessert), milk (drink), ring-necked pheasant (bird), walleye (fish), Western wheat grass (grass, though I imagine few people drink the wheat grass concoctions popular with health nuts elsewhere in the country),
Some Famous and Typical Foods:?Native American foods, especially those of the Great Plains (wojapi,?fry bread, Bannock bread, and so on, as well as traditional foods such as?pemmican and?wahuwapa wasna); German and Eastern European foods, including?kuchen?& chislic?

South Dakota officially made?kuchen?the official state dessert in 2000, after a hard fought (okay, maybe not?that?hard, but quite delicious)?struggle the previous legislative session. ?In his article "Cookin' Kuchen", Trevor Guthmiller - as referenced by the North Dakota State University Library's "Germans from Russia Heritage Collection" - points out that?kuchen?was an important part of South Dakota culture long before that.
German immigrants brought kuchen to South Dakota in the 1880s. Homesteaders often brought very little with them besides their clothes, basic tools, self- sufficiency and a determination to face the challenges that a rough and unsettled South Dakota threw at them...Many came directly from Germany, others most recently from Russia. Their hard work and agricultural prowess turned McPherson County [where many settled] into one of the largest wheat- producing areas in the country...?
To understand why kuchen is such a staple in McPherson County, you must understand the heritage of the people who live there. In 1990, 2,758 residents [the single largest ethnic group in the county] listed their primary ancestry as German... Eureka holds a Schmeckfest every fall, and Leola celebrates Rhubarb Day every other July, and kuchen is prominently featured in those events. There aren?t many lutefisk feeds in this part of the state; it?s a kuchen- eatin? crowd if there ever was one. [Guthmiller 2004]
There are many different varieties of?kuchen: those based on fruits, on cottage cheese, on cream cheese, on a streussel-type filling, and so on. ?So it must have been a difficult choice to pick one to be the state's official dessert. ?The one that was put in place: the apple and cream cheese?kuchen. ?The South Dakota state government [South Dakota Secretary of State Office 2007: 14] even prints the complete "official state recipe" in a government publication. ?Good luck getting them to do that in Annapolis for Smith Island cake.

The recipe I interpret below is the official?kuchen?recipe of the state of South Dakota, on page 14 of the?2007 South Dakota Legislative Manual. ?Since this?is?a government publication,?I could copy and quote the recipe word for word, but you can look it up yourself.

The Recipe: Kuchen

For the official South Dakota?kuchen?recipe assemble the following:

For the crust, you will need:

* regular flour (have it)
* sugar (same)
* salt (yup, have that, too)
* vanilla (got it)
* butter (this I would have had, were it not for that wretched?derecho?that knocked out power in my neighborhood - and many neighborhoods throughout the Mid-Atlantic - for at least five whole days. ?Another $2 for some new butter. ?This?should?be cold but it worked fine at room temperature for me),

For the cream cheese filling that goes on top of the crust, you will need:

* more vanilla and sugar
*?cream cheese (a pound, or two blocks, each about $2 at Harris Teeter)
* an egg (at room temperature - this also had to be replaced thanks to that damn storm)

And for the apple topping, you will also need

* still?more?sugar
* cinnamon (had it)
* and, of course, apples (I got three Granny Smiths for about $2 total)

Mix together the dry ingredients for your crust. ?Use a mixer or just a spoon.
Cut in the butter and add the vanilla.
And press the dough into a lightly greased 9" x 13" pan. ?Put in a preheated 450?F oven for about 15 minutes. ?When done, take out and cool it down, also reducing your oven to 400?F.
While the crust is baking, peel, core and thinly slice your apples and set aside.
Mix together your filling ingredients, apart from the egg, again with a mixer or a spoon.
Add the egg...
...and mix thoroughly.

Pour the filling over the baked crust and spread out evenly.
Next, mix together your sugar and cinnamon.
Arrange the apple slices over the filling as tightly as possible. ?Although I cut up three apples, I could barely fit half of the slices on top.

?Cover with the cinnamon and sugar, and bake for 20 minutes.

With as many components as this recipe has, it is easier than it seems. ?It's best served cold I find, and easier to cut for that matter. ?The apples are still a little crunchy and the cream cheese is a nice, sweet complement to them. ?Now just imagine all the?other?recipes for?kuchen?I could have done!

- - - - -

Now we're done with South Dakota, and it's time to head southward to the home of of bluegrass, Memphis BBQ and the one and only Miss Dolly Parton! ?We are ringing the bell(e)s of Tennessee next week!

Small Business Ain't Employing Like it Used to

It?s paradoxical.

While everyone from politicians to the media extol the value of small business to job creation, its share of U.S. employment has been on a long-term decline.

The majority of the private sector labor force now works in big companies, with that fraction at 51 percent in 2009, up from 43 percent in 1946. The share in medium-sized businesses is down slightly from 34 to 31 percent, while the fraction in the smallest businesses ? those with less than 20 employees ? has declined from 23 percent to 18 percent.

These employment changes result from a subtle, but long-term trend toward more big businesses. While big companies have never been a large fraction of U.S. businesses, and almost certainly never will, they make up a bigger fraction of companies than they did back at the end of World War II. Data from the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis reveals that in 2009, companies with more than 500 employees accounted for 0.3 percent of U.S. companies. Back in 1946, that fraction stood at 0.2 percent.

The growth in big businesses comes at the expense of small companies. Businesses with fewer than 20 workers made up 94.4 percent of U.S. firms back in 1946. In 2009, that share was down to 89.7 percent.

Small business won?t disappear as a major source of employment for Americans. Small scale operations are effective in too many industries for that to ever happen. But, at the same time, I doubt we will ever return to the days when small business accounted for a clear majority of private sector employment.

Chimps in S. Africa attack being reintroduced

JOHANNESBURG ?

Officials say the two chimpanzees that mauled a U.S. college student at an animal refuge in South Africa are being reintroduced at the center.

Eugene Cussons of the Jane Goodall Institute's Chimpanzee Eden SA in eastern South Africa said Monday that chimpanzees Amadeus and Nikki were in separate cages. Cussons said scientists would watch their behavior before letting them back together and with other chimps.

Amadeus, the alpha male, had been held in solitary confinement at the center since the June 28 attack on University of Texas at San Antonio student Andrew Oberle. Nikki, shot in the abdomen and leg after the attack on Oberle, was transferred from the Johannesburg Zoo to the refuge this weekend.

A state investigator says Oberle lost fingers and sustained head and other injuries in the attack.

Syrian diplomat refuses to work for 'violent and oppressive' regime

Syria's top diplomat in London resigned on Monday in protest against the "violent and oppressive" acts of President Bashar al-Assad's regime, the Foreign Office said.

The move comes after a series of defections by senior Syrian officials in recent weeks, including diplomats in several countries and top army officers.

The Foreign Office said in a statement that charge d'affaires Khaled al-Ayoubi had informed it on Monday that he had "left his post", describing it as a blow to the Syrian government.

"Mr al-Ayoubi has told us that he is no longer willing to represent a regime that has committed such violent and oppressive acts against its own people, and is therefore unable to continue in his position," it said.

Britain expelled the previous Syrian charge d'affaires, Ghassan Dalla, and two other diplomats in May. Syria had earlier withdrawn its ambassador from London.

"Mr al-Ayoubi was the most senior Syrian diplomat serving in London. His departure is another blow to the Assad regime," the Foreign Office said.

"It illustrates the revulsion and despair the regime's actions are provoking amongst Syrians from all walks of life, inside the country and abroad."

It added: "We urge others around Bashar al-Assad to follow Mr al-Ayoubi's example; to disassociate themselves from the crimes being committed against the Syrian people and to support a peaceful and free future for Syria."

The Foreign Office said Ayoubi was not speaking to the media and asked for his privacy to be respected.

It said he joined the Syrian diplomatic service in 2001, and that his first posting was in Greece as consul from 2003 to 2008.

A Foreign Office spokesman would not confirm Ayoubi's current whereabouts or say whether he was now seeking asylum in Britain.

Defections are becoming a growing problem for Assad's regime, which has launched a bloody crackdown on a revolt in which more than 20,000 people have died since March 2011, according to activists.

Syria closed its embassy in Australia on Monday amid reports that some of its staff were seeking asylum.

Mayer Dabbagh, Syria's honorary consul in Sydney, confirmed the closure but declined to say why the embassy had shut or what had become of its staff.

Also on Monday a diplomatic source said that another brigadier general had defected from Syria's army to join the ranks of opposition fighters, pushing the total number of rebel generals based in Turkey to 28.

Senior Syrian officers have been crossing over into Turkey to link up with rebel forces on a near daily basis in recent months, often accompanied by rank-and-file troops, to join the ranks of the Free Syrian Army.

There have been a number of defections by diplomats too.

Sources said last week that Syria's charge d'affairs in Cyprus, Lamia Hariri, and her husband Abdel Latif al-Dabbagh, the ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, had both defected.

Nawaf Fares, Syria's ambassador to Iraq, left for Qatar earlier in July month after publicly renouncing his post.

After the first U.S. win, a hug from the first lady.

The U.S. men's basketball team cruised to a 98-71 victory over France in their Olympic opener on Sunday and got quite the reward.

Michelle Obama watched the game, a few rows back. At the final buzzer, the entire team came over for a hug, one by one.

PICTURE YOURSELF IN A BOAT ...

They might not pilot a Yellow Submarine, but two British sailors have received a good-luck message from Beatles legend Paul McCartney.

The 70-year-old musician sent a note Sunday to Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes, who will compete from Monday in the men's 49er competition ? in which a crew of two sail in a high-performance skiff.

"Wishing you the very best of luck on the Lovely Rita in the games. Happy sailing to you both," McCartney said in his message, referring to their boat.

McCartney, who sang at Friday's opening ceremony, told the two British sailors that he shared their passion, and loved "to potter about" on his small dinghy.

Morrison wrote on his blog that the Beatles were Britain's "greatest-ever band" and said he and his teammate "were looking to emulate" the group's success as they take to the water.

DOUBLE ACT

It's Simon and Esther Manzke's first trip to an Olympic Games and they are trying to stand out from the crowd.

Both are wearing small German carnival-style top hats with a piece of cord connecting them and a dumbbell dangling inbetween. Today they have tickets for weightlifting.

"The hats are multifunctional, we have a net for beach volleyball tonight," said Simon, a student from Hamburg. "We are trying to be creative, we know people in the U.K. love hats."

As the siblings headed off to an arena, some London volunteers ran up to them and asked for a photo. "Crazy German people," one shrieked.

PISTORIUS TRAINS

Out in leafy west London, double-amputee Oscar Pistorius gets to run in relative peace. That will all change pretty soon.

On Sunday, Pistorius ran 200-meter splits alongside teammate Ofentse Mogawane, pounding down a university's tree-lined track on his carbon-fiber blades as a handful of curious staff members and students watched on.

It'll get far busier for the 25-year-old "Blade Runner" from Wednesday, when he makes his first formal media appearance in London ahead of his historic debut Saturday in the 400 heats at the Olympic Stadium. He'll also be on South Africa's 4x400 relay team.

Among those cheering him on: His 90-year-old grandmother who's making the trip over to London from South Africa.

All IN A DAY'S WORK

What was supposed to be a full day of work for 150 British soldiers has turned into an afternoon watching women's gymnastics.

Staff Sgt. Marc Robson of the 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery said he was told Sunday to send the soldiers to the North Greenwich Arena for the qualifications rounds. He said he's rotating soldiers in and out, and those outside the arena are performing their security tasks as planned.

The move came after Olympic organizers were criticized for the number of empty seats seen on television.

Robson said the troops were enjoying themselves.

"I was told to let the boys come in and enjoy the show," Robson said. "Look at them, they seem to be liking it just fine."

DOES YAO SPEAK FRENCH?

There are so many media who showed up to cover Team USA vs France that organizers eventually closed off the press area and wouldn't allow any more inside the arena.

One media member stood out ? or, more accurately, up ? more than any other. Yao Ming was in attendance as a Chinese broadcaster.

There was talk of making the press tribune standing room only. If they do, pity the guy stuck behind him.

GREAT ATMOSPHERE

It's the closing seconds. The score is 60-56. The crowd is going crazy. Which Olympic final is this, you ask?

Hardly. It's a group stage basketball game between two countries little known for their basketball ? Tunisia and Nigeria.

The 12,000-seat venue is at least 95 percent full and the crowd has been raucous throughout the mid-morning game. As the game ends, the players of both teams are given a standing ovation.

The next game, Australia vs. Brazil, is a similar affair. There is constant clapping and cheering and the noise reverberates around the arena. The public address announcer organizes the fans, though it's not like they need much encouragement; the fans do the wave and stomp and clap to "We will rock you."

If there's one thing London organizers promised, it was passionate fans. At the basketball venue, they're definitely delivering.

PINNING THEIR HOPES

Kim Rhode's family thought of everything before the London Games ? even bringing their own Olympic pin for the trip.

To commemorate her quest to become the first American to win an individual-sport medal in five straight Olympic Games, Rhode's family made a small number of pins. The image: She's standing on Tower Bridge, larger than life, taking aim at an unseen target, with the U.S. and British flags below.

The family said it received approval from the U.S. Olympic Committee to use an image of the Olympic rings on the pin.

Rhode's signature is etched on the back, as are the years of her now-five Olympic appearances.

And since she's a shooter, it comes with a twist ? push the button on the back, and yep, "bullets" (red flashes of light, actually) come out the barrel of the gun.

SHOWTIME

LeBron, Kobe and Co have hit the floor for their opener against France.

There has been a lot of debate leading up to these games about who would win, these Americans or the 1992 Dream Team.

Bryant raised eyebrows when he said his team would beat Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and the rest.

Either way, there was a much different vibe at the start of this game than when the Dream Team debuted in 1992.

Opponents of that team asked to pose for photos with the U.S. before the games even started.

No such deference from France this time around. French players Tony Parker, Nicolas Batum, Boris Diaw and Ronny Turiaf see these guys all the time in the NBA.

A few hugs and high-fives before the tip. No Kodak moments.

WIEBER'S WORDS

Jordyn Wieber has left the gymnastics floor in tears after missing the all-around. "I'll be alright," the American said as she was escorted away by a women's coach.

Team coordinator Martha Karolyi says she's worried about Wieber. "You try to find words bcause it's almost like someone passes away, and what do you say?" Karolyi says. "But the fact is the fact. She did her best and she was edged by her teammates."

The Americans finished with 181.863 points and have a big lead atop the standings, though the Russians, 2010 world champions and runners-up last year, Romanians and Chinese must still compete. The team final is Tuesday night. Wieber was only the third-best American behind Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas, and countries are limited to two in the all-around final.

YOU'RE THROWING THAT AWAY?

The U.S. women's gymnastics team wasted no time showing why they're the best vaulters in the world.

All four vaulters do the Amanar, considered the hardest vault in the world. They breezed through the routine in Sunday's Olympic debut, and in qualifications, only the top three scores count.

So it was Aly Raisman's score that was thrown out ? and every other country would kill to have gotten her 15.8.

Meanwhile, McKayla Maroney did not appear to be slowed by her broken toe. The reigning world champion in vault qualified for the event finals.

UK STAMP OF APPROVAL

Most national Olympic committees are giving their athletes financial incentives to win a medal ? members of Malaysia's badminton team could even get a bar of gold bullion each worth $600,000 if they win the gold.

But for the hometown Brits, philatelic fame will have to do.

British medal winners receive no prize money from their federation, but the Royal Mail has promised to produce a stamp overnight honoring each of the country's gold medal winners. The stamps will be sold at 500 Post Offices in books of six for 60 pence (94 U.S. cents) each stamp.

Still, it could be worse. Some countries refuse to put you on a stamp until you're dead.

CREDITING KIM

It was a Herculean lift ? and Om Yun Chol is crediting former North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.

Om joined an exclusive group of weightlifters on Sunday to have lifted three times their body weight in the clean and jerk.

"How can any man possibly lift 168kg? I believe the great Kim Jong Il looked over me," according to the internal news agency at the Olympic Games.

"I am very happy and give thanks to our Great Leader for giving me the strength ... It is all because of him."

(AP) ? Ryan Lochte turned his much-anticipated duel with Michael Phelps into a blowout, pulling away to win the Olympic 400-meter individual medley by more than 3 seconds Saturday night. Even more stunning: Phelps didn't win any medal at all.

After barely qualifying for the evening final in a performance that hinted at trouble ahead, Phelps struggled to a fourth-place finish and was denied his 17th career Olympic medal. When it was done, he could barely pull himself out of the pool.

"It was just a crappy race," Phelps said. "I felt fine the first 200, then I don't know. They just swam a better race than me, a smarter race than me, and were better prepared than me. That's why they're on the medal stand."

Lochte took the gold with a time of 4 minutes, 5.18 seconds. Brazil's Thiago Pereira (4:08.86) settled for silver, while Japan's Kosuke Hagino (4:08.94) claimed the bronze ? beating Phelps by a fairly comfortable 34-hundredths of a second for the last spot on the podium.

It was the first time since the 2000 Sydney Games, when Phelps was a 15-year-old unknown who qualified in just one event, that he didn't win at least a bronze in an Olympic race. Since then, he was 16-of-16 ? 14 golds and two bronzes.

Lochte climbed out of the pool with a big smile, waving to the crowd and looking about a fresh as he did at the start. He had predicted this would be his year and, for the first race of the Olympics at least, he was right on the mark.

"I think I'm kind of in shock right now," he said. As for Phelps, "I know he gave it everything he had. That's all you can ask for."

Phelps was trying to become the first male swimmer to win the same individual event at three straight Olympics. He'll have three more chances at a threepeat before he's done in London, having also won the 200 individual medley, plus the 100 and 200 butterfly, at Athens and Beijing.

But this was shocking, totally out of character for a swimmer who won six gold medals in Athens, then a record eight in Beijing to break Mark Spitz's Olympic record.

Phelps fell behind right from the start in the butterfly, his trademark stroke. From there, it was all Lochte. He stretched his margin in the backstroke and breaststroke, then cruised to the gold in the freestyle, a good three body lengths ahead of the rest of the field.

"It's frustrating, that's all I can say. It's pretty upsetting," Phelps said. "The biggest thing now is to try to look forward. I have a bunch of other races, and hopefully we can finish a lot better than how we started."

China claimed a couple of gold medals on the opening night of swimming at the Olympic Aquatic Centre.

Sixteen-year-old Ye Shiwen set a world record in the women's 400 individual medley ? only the third mark to fall since high-tech bodysuits were banned at the end of 2009. She won in 4:28.43, breaking the mark of 4:29.45 by Australia's Stephanie Rice at the 2008 Beijing Games. American Elizabeth Beisel took silver and China's Li Xuanxu grabbed the bronze.

Sun Yang flirted with a world record in the men's 400 freestyle. He took gold in 3:40.14, just off the mark of 3:40.07 by Germany's Paul Biedermann in a rubberized suit three years ago. South Korea's Park Tae-hwan was the silver medalist in 3:42.06, fortunate even to take part after initially being disqualified for a false start in the prelims. The ruling was overturned by governing body FINA a couple of hours later on appeal. Peter Vanderkaay of the U.S. won the bronze in 3:44.69.

Phelps' close call in the morning prelims put him in an already uncustomary position ? swimming on the outside in the No. 8 lane. He only had one swimmer next to him and no idea what Lochte and the others in the middle of the pool were doing.

Not that it would have mattered.

"I don't think the lane had anything to do with it," Phelps said. "I just couldn't really put myself in a good spot for that race. It's frustrating for sure. ... It's just really frustrating to start off on a bad note like this."

Phelps still has six more events to swim in London, plenty of time to make up for his dismal start. He remains two behind the most medals won by any Olympian ? Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina's mark of 18.

Phelps put himself in position to swim another eight events with his performance at the U.S. trials, but he decided to drop the 200-meter freestyle, feeling one less race would give his body a better chance to recover and improve his performance in the other events.

Now, he may be regretting that decision.

The 400 IM was an event he has dominated, but he dropped it from his program after setting a world record in Beijing four years ago (4:03.84), vowing never to swim it again.

He should had stuck with that pledge. Clearly, Phelps didn't leave himself enough time to get back in the kind of shape he needed to win the brutal race, having only brought it back earlier this year.

"I was lucky to get in," he said, referring to his slow time in the morning. "I had a chance to put myself in a spot to start off on a good note and didn't do it."

Lochte gave the Americans their first gold medal of the London Games and put himself in position to fulfill the promise he showed at last year's world championships, where he won five golds and beat Phelps in their two head-to-head meetings.

The friendly rivals have one more showdown in London, in the 200 individual medley. Phelps edged Lochte in that race during the U.S. Olympics trials, but Lochte appears to be on top of his game when it really counts.

About a half-hour after the race, the laid-back Floridian returned to the medal podium to receive the fourth gold medal of his career.

Wearing diamond-studded grillz in his mouth and lime-green sneakers on the feet that powered him through the water faster than anyone else, Lochte strolled around the deck kissing his medal while Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" played over the loudspeaker.

Phelps was nowhere to be found.

I had a chance to take a look at a number of the properties that have been being restored and while I was there they have been laying new wood floor installation. The corporate Fine Floorz from Walnut Creek was setting the brand new flooring in the living room and laminate flooring within the rest room and kitchen areas. The worker said that they had been busy the last few years and went on to explain the several types of hardwood flooring they have been installing. Flooring comes in many alternative supplies and kinds, and every form of Laminate flooring Danville has a look that may change a house and provides it its personal particular and authentic style. Writing: When to wing it and when to research it | A.C. Dillon

Hello, again!? I?ve been buried in interviews for my other blog.? It?s nice to get back here and chat about my first writing passion.

In recent posts, I?ve commented on the importance of research in writing a story.? The little details, whether we realize it or not, do matter.? As a recent example, I was reading a chapter of a story and found myself incredibly irked by a plot point involving murder by sabotaged elevator.? You see, having worked in a corporate office tower in the security department, I knew very well that the way things were being described was completely implausible.? Granted, it?s not the easiest thing to research, but it threw me right off with an otherwise great story.? I contacted the author and shared my expertise, and she was grateful for the insight and has made adjustments to the future story.

This is what our community should do, after all:? aid each other in growth and improvement.? That goes for authors and book reviewers alike.

That said, if we researched every single thing in a book, the creative fun of the piece might dissipate.? I know I experienced that when writing Collide.? I became so irate with certain aspects of American law, I wanted to just forget the story.? I lost my emotional connection to the piece, and without that, I simply cannot write a quality product.

Solution:? either write what you know, or learn how to make calculated shortcuts.

Let?s take my own book, Change of Season, as an example.? Having decided to set the book in a high school setting, I opted to set the story in Toronto and the surrounding area.? I grew up in the area and know the school system and curriculum.? I?m aware of certain courses (Writer?s Craft) being permitted substitutions for standard English courses, and was able to employ that, along with my knowledge of arts-focused high schools here.

However, I needed a boarding school setting.? Having never been to boarding school, I did a lot of research:? I looked up the schools in Canada and some in the US, examined campus maps and school policies, and recalled the experiences of a friend in boarding school.? I wanted a sense of realism, and couldn?t guess my way through it on a viewing of Lost and Delirious (a fantastic Canadian film starring Piper Perabo, Jessica Pare and Mischa Barton, which I namechecked out of love in the novel).

I took liberties with the structure of the arts programming at Casteel Preparatory Academy.? I drew on the reported experiences of friends and family in such programs at the post-secondary level, stripping them down for high school.? Autumn?s writing class and her various prompts were pulled from thin air or derived from past prompts I?ve seen online.? It was ?close enough?, and frankly, all classroom scenes were meant to connect characters more than anything.? Without that first day in Math, we don?t have Veronica and Autumn bonding; without the engagement in Creative Writing, Autumn doesn?t speak to Evan, nor does she connect with her mentor, Professor St. James.? I know at least a few people who?ve come away feeling that the various classes are realistic enough, which goes to show that you can find a shortcut when researching.

I?ve studied Psychology and Social Work, so Autumn?s inner turmoil was drawn from what I know.? As a former veterinary tech, the animal scenes were easily composed.? Music?? My life, if you ask anyone who knows me.? I wrote what I knew.? The only research I did was confirming release dates on music to ensure no anachronisms.

I won?t delve further out of a desire to avoid spoilers, but this is a brief example of how one writer approached the research aspect of writing, and made choices on where to spend the time and where not to.? You know your characters, genre and material better than I.

Ultimately, try to always think of your reader and ask:? if this person was an expert in this area, would he or she be annoyed if I got this completely wrong?? My general rule of thumb is to research anything with a set protocol or series of rules, and to flex the boundaries of more abstract areas.? In other words:? research the concrete things like science, law and geography; feel free to slack a bit with the imaginary all-inclusive resort where your characters have gone to unexpectedly die or the hybrid strain of werewolves you?ve invented.

Or, when in doubt, follow Professor St. James? advice to Autumn:? ?Write what you know, and write when you need to let go.?

Some when physicians, relating to economic leads to, boast to cut back any practice, then your merely resources Patients boast really are Totally free clinics or even subsidized clinics or perhaps a hospital im or her, some Speer said. some Thats not necessarily excellent care. a

A implementation with the ACA offers pressure for some health care bills system At present pressured with a absence of companies.

As with may 2011, some sort of need for nurses inside Texas exceeded a provision through Twenty-two ,thousands of. people who have the Texas Nursing work pressure absence Coalition, which includes around 100 Health-related centers in addition hospitals statewide, released some sort of correspondence in order to condition Sen. Physicians really are Barely faring better. the Organization with American Healthcare universities estimated that Today there was a absence together with Seven ,500 physicians countrywide inside of 2008, and also totally applied health care reform may well widen that shortage in order to A lot more than 130,500 physicians via 2025.

Speer explained Texas features a percentage of One hundred sixty five physicians for every one hundred ,Five hundred inhabitants. People quantities Tumble significantly within a countrywide typical with 220 physicians for each A hundred ,Thousand men and women, earning Texas some sort of ranking along with 42nd within the region, This individual had been quoted declaring.

Locally, the development with nurses In Bexar County outpaced the event with the human population. how much nurses inside of Bexar County increased Thirty-three pct between 2000 in addition the year 2010, according to data out of your Texas desk with Nursing, because the Bexar human population increased 20 or so 3 pct Within the period.

But Speer stated Texas ended upward finding yourself in This dire shortage along with Health-related professionals certainly which its developments still havent evaluate So that you can closing the space.

And also the advancing chronilogical age of middle-agers isnt supporting. which era is predicted to produce a unique boom inside health care requirement. some Pew study heart estimates that Ten ,thousands of folks risk turning 65 Each day right up until 2020. some Texas health insurance and specific providers charge is Guessing how many Texans a minimum of Sixty-five years of grow older could raise away from 2. 8-10 Million money inside 2013 So that you can a number of. several Mil inside 2040.

A the issue is merely prone to escalate through 2015, 2020, some sort of Novak said. some (The retiring infant boomer) individual inhabitants are growing considerably, Therefore we need a lot more suppliers, definitely not significantly a smaller amount. a

A reply for the lack is just to generate more nurses additionally physicians, However, educators are combating financially To be able to scholar sufficient pupils In order to satisfy the requirement.

Prior to A few Texas Center concerning Nursing labourforce scientific studies declaration, there was 12 ,228 graduates along with prelicensure Texas RN purposes Within the 2010-2011 academic year. which number will have to raise In order to 18 ,777 some or even 74 some to fulfill requirement by 2015, in addition should Greater than two times by way of 2020, some assertion said.

However, possessing back again the expansion is only deficiencies Inside faculty. Novak stated the challenging to bring in nursing faculty simply because Theres a fascination with these throughout the country, and many favor to carry on instruction.

Furthermore, Texas legislators reduced help regarding nursing training through Seventeen Million bucks, or even 36, with the 2011 legislative program.

Speer stated Health-related schools inside of Texas enhanced the registration in an attempt to narrow the shortages, But the achievable insufficient push On Healthcare training video poker machines for residencies within hawaii is only draining Texas of their long term Medical doctors.

Investment for the family process Residency system, which actively works to location loved ones physicians car problem plus underserved locations, chop lower from Greater than Twenty Mil money In order to Five. half a dozen Mil within the 2011 legislative program. in addition, the main Care Residency process, which contained physicians probably to practice primary Good care inside underserved aspects of Texas, finished up being completely eliminated.

Due to insufficient investment and easily available residency position devices, numerous upcoming doctors are forced To be able to fulfill any residencies inside additional declares. in the UTHSC, Health-related School dean Francisco Gonzlez-Scarano estimates which regarding fifty percent of the graduating pupils are put with residencies outside Texas.

That will become particularly troublesome simply because physicians often remain where theyre trained. Speer explained younger Medical doctors will stay where these people certainly any residency regarding Seventy pct of times. when a hundred newest graduates have to go away Texas to get residency position devices, merely Twenty-five may come back.

A leads to for that lack may be Intricate, Nonetheless, a well-supplied pipeline of Healthcare specialists is simply the a very important factor that can Work Out The situation, Speer mentioned.

Milwaukee Business Networking Opportunities: How To Hire The ...

By Russell D. Nheumane

The Internet requires that businesses have significant ecommerce web development to be able to stay competitive. For owners of web design services, selecting a company that provides ecommerce solutions can almost ensure an influx of new customers, if it is done right. But, site owners need to be quite specific about what they want when hiring ecommerce design services. This includes tools for sending and receiving payments, shipment options, and user friendly website design.

The site and business needs to be examined to understand what it needs before the search for a web designer should begin. Ecommerce is a constantly changing field and much can depend on the products the owner is selling and how the owner wants those products presented. Ecommerce web development experts can also help site owners decide what should be on the site, but it is very helpful for the site owner to have already spent time thinking this through.

After deciding what an owner desires to achieve from the ecommerce site, the next step is to understand what services most developers offer. This is often done in consultation with the developer, but can be done alone too. Payment acceptance and processing ought to be one item that every ecommerce site includes. These tools permit the owner to process payments from customers in a wide variety of formats. The very least that should be expected to be provided is credit card and payment system services. For sites that provide items, it is also important to have some kind of shipment interface and program as well.

Once the plan is decided on for the services needed for the site and the owner's needs, web design quotes should be obtained. It's important for the owner not to feel required to utilize a developer just because that developer was consulted during planning, getting quotes from multiple service providers is important. This will make sure that the owner has the largest selection of qualified providers available to compare.

Selecting the best firm is the result of following some specific steps on the part of the site owner. The most important step is outlining the website plan and how the site fits into that plan. Next the owner should learn as much as he or she can about ecommerce design solutions so that the owner can know what to discuss with developers. Finally, the owner should get many quotes to ensure the best developer is selected for the job.

Rams TE Michael Hoomanawanui is able to practice after suffering a torn ACL on November 13.
