Sony's Alpha A37 and NEX-F3 pose for the camera, reveal more angles, details

Sony's Alpha A37 and NEX-F3 pose for the camera, reveal more angles, details

Well, well, talk about déjà vu! It was just yesterday that a corner of Sony's 16.1 megapixel NEX-F3 leaked onto the interwebs and now more photos have surfaced, along with a previously unannounced shooter, the Alpha A37 SLT. The pictures come courtesy of Yang Canggih, which says it had a chance to demo the two devices yesterday at Sony's Partner's Conference in Jakarta (curiously, the NEX-F3 post isn't live as of this writing, but Sony Alpha Rumors has the images up). Starting with the F3, the mirrorless camera has lost a smidgen of the curves found on its older sibling, the C3, adopting a slight bit of the angular edges that once made the NEX-7 the badass standout in the lineup. You'll notice that the shutter button and grip have an uncanny resemblance to the 7's, not to mention that it's clearly gained a pop-up flash -- a first for the lower-end NEXs. Past that, the rumored -- and self-portrait friendly -- 180 degree tilt-screen is also present, which'll likely give the C3 an edge over its siblings when it comes to composing shots. Also worth note, some of the buttons on back have been slightly repositioned.

Moving along, those hoping for a successor to the A35 will apparently have their wish granted with the 16.1 megapixel A37. According to Yang Canggih, it features the articulating display from last generation of NEX cams, Auto Portrait Framing (first introduced with the A57), four more effect modes than the a35 (up from 11) and an ergonomic grip in the vein of the A77. Sadly, that's about all that's currently known, so hopefully we'll get an official introduction to the cameras soon. Head past the break for a shot of the A37 and then check out the links below for even more of both.

Ramping Up Your Laptop's RAM

One of the simplest ways to improve performance on a laptop is to add more RAM, or random access memory. RAM prices have been steadily dropping over the years, and it's now possible to see a significant performance boost with an investment of twenty or thirty dollars. If your machine is sluggish, you might need additional memory. Even if your machine is new, a memory upgrade is worth investigating.

President Obama test drives a Sphero on Boulder visit

Image

President Obama was in the Centennial State last night, hyping up an enthusiastic crowd at the University of Colorado at Boulder's Coors Events Center. Of course, he couldn't help but take some time to check out some some of the local innovation. The President took a few moments out of his busy schedule to play around with the smartphone-controlled Sphero RC ball, declaring "how cool is that," before demanding that the crowd, "give me some space to drive my ball." He also tossed out some superlatives like "terrific," after nearly driving it into a woman's flip-flop. Now that's a solid endorsement, if ever we've heard one. In all, it didn't last long -- the guy's got a country to run, after all.

Samsung details Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades for American carriers

Samsung details Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades for American carriers

Samsung has published a list detailing which carrier variants of its phones and tablets will be blessed with Android Ice Cream Sandwich. While Sprint's Nexus S 4G is already enjoying the latest Android OS, the update will also arrive on the Now Network's Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch. From Verizon, both the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 7.7 will get the upgrade, accompanied by the WiFi variants of the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and the Galaxy Tab 8.9.

On AT&T, ICS is confirmed for its Galaxy S II, the Galaxy S II Skyrocket, Galaxy Note, Captivate Glide, Nexus S and Galaxy Tab 8.9. T-Mobile customers, however, lack a similarly breathless list of upgradable hardware, instead Samsung says it will aim to upgrade "eligible devices" in the coming months and will "provide updates as we have additional details to share." Which all sounds like those updates aren't coming to Big Magenta any time soon. Samsung vows to update the list with more details as they arrive, which is available at the source below.

Maingear teases incoming desktop line, promises smaller towers and Ivy Bridge CPUs

maingear ivy bridge teaser

Maingear's Shift is a force to be feared, but it generally requires an entire wing of one's home to be assembled and configured. Hyperbole aside, there's no question that Maingear's aiming to branch out somewhat after the aforesaid rig's successful run, today teasing an "all new line of desktops." We're told to expect smaller designs with "clean" aesthetics, Vertical Exhaust cooling technology and third-generation Intel Core processors (with factory overclocked options, naturally). Prices are slated to start at $899, though there's no real clue as to when we'll see these things up for pre-order. Here's hoping you didn't plop down an order last week, huh?

Seeing daddy love again | A Divorce Dad Blog

@favim.com

The warnings are frightening. Children from broken homes are more likely to end up divorced ?- if they get married at all. Nicholas Wolfinger, from the University of Utah and author of the book Understanding the Divorce Cycle: The Children of Divorce in Their Own Marriages says

??the risk of divorce is 50 percent higher when one spouse comes from a divorced home, and 200 percent higher risk when both of them do.

Estimates show that by the age of eighteen 50% of children will experience a parents? separation and divorce at least once. If those numbers hold true then with my two kids one them is almost guaranteed to marry a person whose parents split. If that?s the case, we might as well hire family attorneys during the honeymoon.

My children were shockingly young when I divorced and at that time the perceptions of a two-year and nine-month old about daddy?s romantic relationships were irrelevant. I was like James Bond with a license to act however I wanted with whomever I chose. At the time I saw my responsibility as a father as twofold, pay their mother and keep them from their sticking fingers in light sockets and running with knives on my weekends. Thanks to their naps and naivety, I never concerned myself with the need to set a proper example.

???

Eventually, three events would occur that forced me to seriously reevaluate that life view. First, I had experienced a string of relationship disasters that left me emotionally desolate and spiritually bankrupt. Second, my children were at the age they began to unknowingly share small details about their mom and step-dad?s marriage. And third, upon meeting the Queen I realized her children had no immediate example for what a healthy relationship should look like.

When it comes to a marriage and romantic relationships in general, I think there are a few universals we all acknowledge; fidelity, commitment, love, etc. There remains however other attributes each of us differ widely on; honor, faith, spousal duty to name a few. As my kids began sharing stories about their mother?s marriage it soon dawned on me that unless they had another model of what a respectful, honorable, and healthy relationship looked like they?d be destined to imitate whatever they saw. I know exactly where I learned how to love and display affection ? my father. A man of few words, years later I would find myself just like him unable, but more often unwilling, to express my true feelings. It would take years of therapy to change that.

???

It has become one of the Queen?s and my most important life missions; to be an example to our kids of what a healthy and loving relationship should look like. I want her son to see a man respect and love his mother, I want my son to watch his dad honor a woman, and I want both of our daughters to learn what to expect from boys by how I love and respect her. I believe it is one ? if not the ? most important callings I have as a father.

And we know the cards are stacked against us.

As divorced parents neither the Queen nor I can control how our ex?s manage their personal relationships. It isn?t our place to remind everyone that conflict doesn?t need to erupt in screaming matches, cursing, and slamming doors. It?s not for us to suggest how each should speak to their spouses or significant others. And we also know we shouldn?t discredit our ex?s in front of our kids by what we see or hear. All we can do is remain intentional about our own relationship and model for them what we believe is genuine.

I believe it is one of ? if not the ? most important callings I have as a father.

Just last week my son and I stopped by the Queen?s to pick something up. While I was there, as I often do, I wanted to leave small love notes around her house as surprises to stumble upon when she cleans her kitchen, puts on makeup, or pulls back the covers for bed. It?s something we?ve both done since day one.?After he watched me write notes professing my undying love for her I asked him to help me hide them. I wanted him to be a part of what was happening. When he asked why I was doing all this I explained it was because I love her and I want her to know it when she reads these notes, plus she likes surprises. Within minutes he was anxiously looking for the perfect hiding spot, and while he didn?t give our talk another thought I could tell the message registered.

I am often deliberate about displaying my affection for her in front of her children. I purposefully do and say things when I know they will hear it because I want them to know that, despite what happened to their parents or those of so many of their friends, relationships can and do work. ?I want the Queen?s children to understand that their mother is loved completely and I want my kids to see their father sincerely love a woman. And I want them all to look back with fond memories on how their mom and dad loved, honored, and cherished one another when everything around them says it couldn?t be done.

Intel Core i7-2700K

When Intel released its line of second-generation Core processors a year ago (under the ?Sandy Bridge? code name), it offered consumers new opportunities in various areas of CPU performance, regardless of how much you wanted to spend. The top chip at launch was the Core i7-2600K (4 stars), a four-core, eight-thread, 3.4GHz powerhouse that clearly defined the high end of the mainstream space. But as Sandy Bridge approached the end of its brief life span, a minor update was needed to help guide the family into a more Ivy Bridge??friendly world. That CPU, the Core i7-2700K ($332 list) was to serve as a bare replacement for the Core i7-2600K, without upsetting too many digital apple carts along the way. At that job, and any others required of it, it succeeds?if not dazzlingly.

The Core i7-2700K represents a mere 100MHz speed bump above its predecessor, to 3.5GHz. But all of its other characteristics are identical: 8MB of cache, four cores and eight threads (thanks to Intel?s Hyper-Threading technology), integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000, and the full line of shiny Sandy Bridge features, ranging from Turbo Boost 2.0 (which temporarily increases processing speed when the appropriate head room is available), Quick Sync Video (for faster rendering and conversion of video files), and so on. Of course, the Core i7-2700K also shares some of the same limitations of the Core i7-2600K, most notably in that graphics system. It supports only DirectX 10.1 (DX10.1), not DX11, and won?t provide more than adequate support for any builder who declines (for whatever reason) to use a discrete video card.

For those who don?t already own a Core i7-2600K, the evidence is clear: There?s no reason to upgrade. Testing both the older chip and the new one in the same desktop revealed that there?s practically little performance difference between the two. As you might expect, the faster chip inspired a few marginal improvements. We saw, for example, scores of 7.28 versus 7.26 in CineBench R11.5, 3,725 versus 3,679 in the Futuremark PCMark 7 full-system test, and the newer chip needed five fewer seconds to complete the POV-Ray 3.7 single-CPU rendering test (14 minutes 54 seconds versus 14:59). But in other tests we saw no substantial changes at all; both chips took 2 minutes 50 seconds to apply a dozen filters and effects in Adobe Photoshop CS5, both took 32 seconds to convert a video in Handbrake 0.9.6, and both achieved the same 206MBps rate in our TrueCrypt 7.1a cryptography trial. Even power usage was functionally identical between the chips, with the full systems for both idling at 71 watts and achieving about 167 watts under full load.

We ran as much of our suite of gaming tests on the Core i7-2700K as we could to measure its graphics prowess, but the lack of DX11 support limited what we could do. As it was, it proved inadequate for most basic 3D gaming at a fairly standard gamer?s resolution of 1,920 by 1,200; in Tom Clancy?s HAWX2, usually the benchmark at which lower-tier video hardware does best, the Core i7-2700K could eke out only 15fps with all the details maxed. If you?re willing to dial back on the eye candy and play at a lower resolution, you will be able to get playable frame rates using just the Core i7-2700K. But our recommendation about this likewise hasn?t changed much from the Core i7-2600K days: Buy a discrete video card, even an inexpensive one, so you can leave the CPU to what it does best. (For better integrated graphics at this point, AMD APUs are the preferred way to go?but you?ll sacrifice raw performance as a result.)

At this point, with Ivy Bridge just around the corner, the Core i7-2700K is an upgrade that will appeal primarily to enthusiasts looking for every last drop of speed they can squeeze from a CPU. Its unlocked multiplier means it?s every bit as overclockable as its forebear, and that extra 100MHz gives you a nice, if subdued, additional nudge out the starting gate. But if you already have a Core i7-2600K, there?s no reason to replace it now. If you want to stay within the Sandy Bridge family, our favorite remains the Editors? Choice Core i5-2500K (4.5 stars), which lags behind the Core i7-2600K by 100MHz, lacks a bit of cache, and doesn?t have Hyper-Threading, but delivers nearly equivalent performance in most areas and costs considerably less ($216 list). If, however, you?re seeking out the fastest second-generation Core chip you can find, and aren?t concerned about its relationship to the Core i7-2600K or its rapidly approaching obsolescence with Ivy Bridge, the Core i7-2700K is a potent choice for powering a high-end middle-of-the-road PC.

Adobe unveils CS6 and subscription-based Creative Cloud service, up for pre-order now (video)

adobe creative cloud cs6

Adobe's biggest day of 2012? Go ahead, don't be afraid to call it what it (probably) is. For starters, the outfit is introducing Creative Suite 6 to the world in formal fashion, with 14 applications either unveiled or refreshed. Photoshop CS6 is graduating from beta -- seeing an update that'll provide "near instant results" thanks to the Mercury Graphics Engine -- while Content-Aware Patch and Content-Aware Move are sure to please artists suffering from the "Surely you can fix this in post!" clientele backlash. Adobe Muse is happily entering the scene for the first time, described as a "radical tool that'll enables designers to create and publish HTML5 web sites without writing code." (We're still waiting for Flash to comment.)

In related news, those who aren't up for paying $1,299 (and up) for one of the new suites can try something a bit different: monthly installments. That's coming courtesy of Creative Cloud, an quasi-new initiative designed to harness the power of cloud-based app distribution and streaming in a way that'll make CS6 more accessible than any of the packs that came before. You can tap into CS6's amenities over your broadband connection for $74.99 per month, while those who agree to an annual subscription can get in for $49.99 per month. To be clear, that provides unbridled access to any CS6 tool: Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Pro and AfterEffects, and the rest of the gang. If you're jonesing for Photoshop alone, that one will be available for $29.99 per month month (no contract) or $19.99 per month (annual agreement). There's no set release date just yet, but we're told to expect the new goods "within 30 days," and pre-orders seem to be a go. Head on down to the source links for more details on each individual aspect, and catch a promo video for the cloud-based subscription offering just after the break.

HTC One X disassembled

Android Central

See that beautiful display?  It can come out of the phone, but it's not something you'd want to do to yourself.  XDA China ?has posted instructions on how to disassemble the HTC One X.  It's not for the faint of heart, and the translation isn't perfect, but it's there for those of us that care about such things.

For someone like me (a self-professed hardware junkie) this is extremely interesting.  The One X is definitely one of the most desirable pieces of hardware to come from HTC in a while, and seeing how they package the components in the thin, one-piece polycarbonate shell really makes you realize how much work goes into the engineering of these things.

We get a good look at the display, which is the Super LCD 2 variety (learn more about display tech in our display tech discussion), Tegra 3 chip, and all the other various boards, chips, and cameras that make this phone awesome.

And see, the battery CAN be removed.
