What About Your Friends: A Look into ... - Luv and Relationships

The Start of Friendships

As a child, the need for friendship begins. Children spend a majority of their time finding ways to be accepted and connected with their peers. Throughout this process and as people grow older; it seems that people connect with others of similar personalities, culture, ethnicity, religion, age, or environmental influences. Why, because everyone wants to identify with some part of themselves for a sense of belonging and social connection. Some even try to identify with people who have opposite personalities or others aspects that are opposite from them. This may be to help them separate from their reality or certain things they do not like about themselves such as their religion, race, and culture and so on. Either way, it is a way to connect with others. This connection and bond is commonly known as a friendship and each person who is involved in the connection are considered friends (as we all know).

Obama's Mortgage Plan Divides, But Can it Conquer? ? HouseHunt ...

President Obama recently introduced a mortgage refinance plan in an attempt to shake things loose in a housing market showing signs of recovery. But as is typical with politics these days, the only thing he shook up was rhetoric and posturing.

California Democratic Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren says some ideas are ?quite good,? but ?unfortunately a large portion of it would require legislation, and we have seen that the Republicans ? are unwilling to pass legislation.?

Countered California Republican Congressman John Campbell: ?Like many things that are happening right now, particularly from the president, this is a campaign-oriented proposal and not something that is intended to actually ever become law.?

So can it become law? Should it? Are any of the proposals worth giving a chance, or are the problems too deep, cumbersome and volatile?

According to a White House press release, some of the plan?s key proposals include:

Broad-based refinancing to help responsible borrowers: The plan would provide borrowers who are current on their payments with an opportunity to refinance, cut through the red tape and perhaps save up to $3,000 a year. Sometimes homeowners with good credit and clean payment histories have reported being rejected because their mortgages are underwater.

Homeowner Bill of Rights: This would be a single set of standards to make sure borrowers and lenders play by the same rules, including access to a simple mortgage disclosure form, full disclosure of fees and penalties, guidelines to prevent conflicts of interest and protection for families against inappropriate foreclosure.

Investigating mortgage origination and servicing abuses: This would provide new resources to investigate misconduct that contributed to the financial crisis.

Rehabilitating neighborhoods and reducing foreclosures: Among other things, this would increase incentives for modifications that help borrowers rebuild equity.

A roundup of reactions from Housing Wire includes:

Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan said the bill would essentially shift the decision-making to homeowner when it comes to refinancing: ?The bank will have no ability to say no to homeowners if we get this bill passed and get this program established.?

Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Ala., chairman of the House Financial Services Committee claims the program would unnecessarily shift risk to the Federal Housing Administration: ?This is not a serious plan to help the nation?s housing market. President Obama is proposing to get out of the hole we?re in by digging deeper.?

Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., said anything to help the foreclosure situation is a good move:
?Instead of letting these homes sit vacant and drag down neighboring property values, lets give families the chance to move in, pay rent and be good neighbors.?

Mortgage Bankers Association CEO David Stevens would like to have a single set of standard for lenders because it would ?help provide confidence and certainty in the real estate market for borrowers, lenders and servicers alike.?

Former FHA commissioner Brian Montgomery said the plan ?appears to be the right and proper thing to do. However it remains to be seen the level of participation and ultimately what cost, if any, to the taxpayers, most of which have grown weary of the nagging housing crisis.?

Rookie cop goes undercover to bust students

On his second trip through high school, former C-student Alex Salinas got a lot of A's.

He was 22, however, and an undercover narcotics officer going by the name Johnny Ramirez. When his first semester progress report showed a 3.25 average, the baby-faced police rookie made a mental note: Stop turning in homework assignments.

Eight months later, the ruse was up, and Exeter, a bucolic citrus-growing community in California's Central Valley, was turned on its ear after a school-day police sweep ended with a dozen Exeter High students in custody on drug charges.

Some people wondered how the deception by Salinas could have gone on for so long in the small town of just 10,000 people. Others lamented that the problems of the big city had come to the quaint community of antique shops and historic murals set amid a stunning backdrop of the snow-capped Sierra Nevada.

"It's amazing we were able to keep a secret in this little town for that long," said Police Chief Cliff Bush, who had been searching for years for just the right officer to pull off the undercover ploy. "People in little towns tend to know everything about everybody."

Leading the campus sweep this month was the tall, lanky Salinas, dressed in the crisp black uniform and combat boots of the Exeter Police Department instead of the T-shirts and sneakers he had worn as Johnny Ramirez.

Still, there was no mistaking the boyish face and the wide smile gleaming with braces.

"A lot of jaws dropped when they saw me," Salinas said. "They knew me as that kid at school that they hung around with, and then the next thing they're in handcuffs and I'm in a uniform."

The sting got more attention from the media than a drug bust of 12 students normally would because of something the chief now laments: It happened the same week as the debut of the Hollywood comedy "21 Jump Street," which features ? you got it ? undercover cops fighting crime at a high school.

Chief Bush insisted it was not a case of life imitating art.

"A day or two later I became aware of the movie," Bush said. "The last thing I would do is check movie premieres. This just happened to coincide with the movie's release."

Sending a message
There had been no major complaints about drug dealing at the 1,000-student school that sits within sight of the police station, but Bush said he had been thinking for years about doing an undercover sting to send a message.

One day last summer, he ran into Salinas, who was weeks away from graduating from the police academy. Salinas had ridden along with Bush years earlier when the chief was still a patrolman.

Bush eventually approached Salinas with the plan. With it came a full-time job on the city's 17-member Police Department ? an offer Salinas wouldn't refuse.

As Johnny Ramirez, Salinas attended Monarch football games and pep rallies. He purposely landed himself in detention so he could meet people outside of the four classes he attended before reporting each afternoon to the county drug task force headquarters for briefings and homework assignments. He made a Facebook page and forged friendships, which made the deception hard for him to bear.

"There were a few students I got to know who are good kids, and I did feel kind of bad for being their friend and then being something different," he said.

Only the principal, vice principal and Johnny's guidance counselor knew about the operation, school Superintendent Renee Whitson said.

"Even I didn't know the name he'd go by," she said.

Still, a moment of panic erupted on the first day of school last fall when a teacher pointed to the new kid and joked, "We've got a new narc on campus. They tell me he's wearing a green shirt." Johnny Ramirez's shirt was green.

Eventually students sold the new kid marijuana and cocaine, the prescription painkiller hydrocodone and the muscle relaxant Soma.

"There was certainly no celebration on the day of conclusion. It was a very sad day," Whitson said. "These are our students. We hope this is the necessary wakeup call to make this positive for their lives."

As the school year winds down, the arrested students are in the midst of review board hearings. Only three are older than 18, and one student's parents were also arrested for investigation of methamphetamine possession.

In the end, large quantities of drugs were not confiscated and none of the arrests involved trafficking significant quantities, though many purchases were for amounts that exceeded "personal use," Salinas said.

Was it worth keeping an officer off Exeter's streets and on a school campus for eight months?

Yes, Chief Bush said. But he is almost embarrassed that the undercover operation has garnered so much publicity, mostly because of his own bad timing regarding the release of "21 Jump Street."

"This is what I was trying to avoid, that we busted the local Scarface at the high school," Bush said, making reference to another Hollywood movie, this one about a drug kingpin. "Turns out they were just tiny amounts, but if you've got just one kid dealing drugs at school, that's too many."

The chief hopes the arrests have a lasting impact on all students, though he does realize he might have created a problem of another kind in Exeter.

"I'd hate to be the new kid at school next year," he said. "They won't make very many friends."

Lindsay Lohan's legal woes end after five years - latimes.com

Click for more photos

An L.A. County Superior Court judge ended Lindsay Lohan's supervised probation Thursday, praising her for completing her community service and ending five years of criminal court appearances that saw her jailed several times.

The hearing at the Airport Courthouse was the final probation status check for Lohan related to a shoplifting conviction and probation violation stemming from a 2007 drunk driving conviction.

Judge Stephanie Sautner declared "she did it" in announcing Lohan had completed her community service and therapy sessions.

PHOTOS: The trials and tribulations of Lindsay Lohan

"She has completed it short of a year and she has done everything this court asked her to do," Sautner said.

Lohan has been on formal supervised probation and was required to complete counseling sessions and 480 hours of community service work at the Los Angeles County morgue. She completed her final sessions in both this week.

Sautner told Lohan that she was now ending probation for the DUI case and making the shoplifting case unsupervised probation?that will end in May 2014.

"The only terms for you are for you to obey all laws," Sautner said to Lohan. "You don't need to come to court anymore."

A smiling Lohan responded: "I just wanted to thank you for being fair. What you've done has really opened a lot of doors for me."

Lohan, 25, with red hair and a turquoise suit, entered the courthouse shortly before 10 a.m.,?passing a row of waiting papparazzi. Often solemn at her court appearances, her mood this time around was decidedly lighter.

Sautner last month told the actress she would end her probation for the DUI conviction and place her on informal probation for theft of a necklace from a Venice jewelry store if she finished the remaining sessions.

During Lohan's lengthy probation stemming from two DUI arrests, she has been repeatedly jailed by judges for various violations, including using drugs and alcohol and failing to do her required community service at a downtown women's center.

Sautner sentenced Lohan to jail and saw her placed under house arrest for her probation violations. Sautner then imposed a strict?set of monthly community service and therapy requirements with a warning that the actress would be jailed if she did anything wrong.

Lohan has publicly credited the judge and?Lohan's attorney, Shawn Holley, with helping her rebuild her life and career, which hit rock bottom with the necklace theft conviction.

Her probation status and court troubles have hindered her ability to get work. But recently she hosted "Saturday Night Live" and is slated to appear on the TV show "Glee" and as Elizabeth Taylor in a Lifetime movie.?

At the end of the hearing, Sautner told Lohan, "Stop nightclubbing and focus on your work."

Samsung's vacuum tube driven speaker lineup gets priced for US, available this Spring

Image
It's no secret that Samsung's been teasing a major interest in premium audio since CES, blending digitally powered speakers with vacuum tube pre-amplifiers. We didn't get a chance to check the systems out in Vegas, but today the company's spilling the details regarding US pricing on a trio of systems, all of which will be available in the Spring. The star of the show is the $800 DA-E750 Audio Dock, featuring the rear-mounted dual dock for Galaxy (charging only) and iOS devices we first saw last month. Clad in a polished wood case (available in black or cherry), the 2.1 stereo system pumps out up to 100 watts of power through its glass fiber speakers and tweeters. As an added touch, its JJ Electronics 12AU7 tubes (the same you could use for guitar amps) are sunken in from its top under glass, allowing for clear view of their glow. Best of all, aside from the requisite USB and 3.5mm inputs, the DA-870 works wirelessly with Samsung's AllShare Play, AirPlay and Bluetooth 3.0 w/ aptX.

Moving past the HiFi category, Samsung's also priced a duo of surround sound systems aimed at the home theater market. To start, there's the $1,000 HT-E6730W Blu-ray 3D 7.1 home theater system and its $800 5.1 sibling, the HT-E6500W Blu-ray 3D -- both of which feature the same tube pre-amp and similar wireless capabilities as the DA-E750. Notably, the E6730W features a tiltable top speaker on each of its stereo towers, allowing for a more personalized output depending on your room. Furthermore, if you happen to have a DA-E750, too, you'll be able to stream the audio via Bluetooth if you find yourself far away from your television. There's no exact date on when you'll be able snag any of them, but Samsung notes that the 5.1 system is currently shipping.

(AP) ? Arab countries, divided over how to stop Syria's bloodshed, plan to call for the Syrian regime to halt its crackdown on civilians, let in humanitarian groups and free detainees, according to recommendations Wednesday by foreign ministers preparing for a summit this week.

Even before Arab heads of state began their Thursday summit in the Iraqi capital, Syria sharply rejected any measures they take. A Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Jihad Makdessi, said Damascus would "not deal with any initiative" that might come out of the 22-member Arab League.

The rejection reflected Damascus' refusal to work with the League after the pan-Arab body suspended Syria's membership as punishment for the bloody crackdown on protesters demanding the ouster of President Bashar Assad. The U.N. says that over the past year, more than 9,000 people have been killed in the violence.

Arab countries are divided over how aggressively to intervene in Syria's turmoil. Gulf nations, particularly Saudi Arabia and Qatar, are believed to want to start providing weapons to Syria's rebels and even carve out a "safe area" inside the country that the opposition can use as a staging ground.

Iraq, the host of this week's summit, is more cautious. Baghdad's Shiite-dominated government is close to Iran, Assad's closest ally, and is wary of hurting those ties. On Wednesday, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari told Arab foreign ministers gathered in Baghdad that his country rejects foreign intervention in Syria but supports what he called the aspirations of the Syrian people.

"We stress our full support to the aspirations and legitimate demands of the Syrian people to freedom and democracy and their right to determine their future, choose their leaders and the peaceful transition for power," said Zebari, a Kurd.

Zebari sounded more assertive at a news conference, saying Iraq "could no longer remain neutral" in the face of the violence in Syria, its neighbor.

He also said that the Syria crisis was headed toward "internationalization," maintaining that the Arab League already has done all it could to resolve the conflict.

Assad's regime on Tuesday announced its acceptance of an initiative by U.N. envoy Kofi Annan calling for a cease-fire. However, violence continued with clashes between government forces and armed rebels. Syria's opposition is deeply skeptical that Assad will carry out the terms of the peace plan.

Zebari said the Arab summit would issue a resolution on Syria that complemnents the international efforts to end the conflict. He told reporters that a "marriage" between Arab and international proposals on Syria was likely to force the Syrian regime and its opponents to implement peace plans.

Arab foreign ministers on Wednesday were working out recommendations for the heads of state to approve when they meet here Thursday. According to draft recommendations obtained by The Associated Press, the summit would call on Assad to implement a cease-fire, let in humanitarian aid and release all those detained the past year. It also demands he allow peaceful protests, withdraw army troops from urban centers and implement previous Arab League proposals to end the conflict.

Speaking before Zebari, Libya's foreign minister, Ashour Ben Khayil, was much more forceful about the conflict in Syria.

"We witness the tragedy of our brothers in beloved Syria who have, for more than a year, face a tyrannical and harsh regime. Regrettably, the world stands by, unable to take decisive action," he said. "What we witness every day across Syria is genocide ... against a people whose only sin is that they demanded freedom and dignity."

Libya, where longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi was ousted and killed last year, hosted the last Arab summit, in 2010. Last year's Arab Spring upheavals led to the canceling of the summit, meant to be held in Iraq.

Opposition members accuse Assad of agreeing to Annan's plan to stall for time as his troops make a renewed push to kill off bastions of dissent.

"We are not sure if it's political maneuvering or a sincere act," said Louay Safi, a member of the opposition Syrian National Council. "We have no trust in the current regime. ... We have to see that they have stopped killing civilians."

Annan's plan calls on Damascus to immediately stop troop movements and use of heavy weapons in populated areas and to commit to a daily two-hour halt in fighting to allow humanitarian access and medical evacuations.

Gulf Arab nations, particularly Saudi Arabia and Qatar, have been pushing behind the scenes for more assertive action to end the Syria conflict. Privately, they see little benefit in the Arab League's efforts to reach a peaceful settlement and prefer instead to see a small core of nations pooling together to act on their own.

Among the options they are considering are arming the Syrian rebels and creating a safe haven for the opposition alongside the Turkish-Syrian border to serve as a humanitarian sphere or staging ground for anti-regime forces.

The Sunni-led Gulf countries are hoping that by forcing Assad's fall, they can pull Sunni-majority Syria out of its alliance with Iran and break the belt of Tehran's influence that stretches through Iraq and Syria to the Mediterranean.

A Sunni-ruled Syria would give the U.S.-allied Gulf Arabs a significant victory in their long-running power struggle with non-Arab, mainly Shiite Iran.

In a sign of their cool ties with Baghdad's Shiite leadership, most ? perhaps all ? rulers of the Gulf nations were likely to stay away from the summit and send lower-level officials. Jordan's King Abdullah, also a Sunni, is not attending, sending his prime minister in his place, the government announced.

In a possible breakthrough in Iraq's relations with Bahrain, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki met on the sidelines of Wednesday's meeting with Bahrain's foreign minister, Sheik Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa.

No details emerged from their meeting.

Relations have been tense since Iraqi politicians publicly criticized last year's crackdown by Bahrain's Sunni-led regime against the nation's Shiite majority.

Shiite-ruled Iraq is hosting the summit to show that it has emerged from years of turmoil and American occupation. But a massive security operation in Baghdad mirrors fears that Sunni militants could try and disrupt the meetings.

Central Baghdad was virtually deserted on Wednesday, with hundreds of heavily armed troops and policemen deployed in full combat gear. The summit venue is a palace once used by Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and is located inside the "Green Zone," a highly secure area on the west bank of the Tigris River where the Iraqi prime minister's office and the U.S. and the British embassies are also located.

"Iraq does not search for a role or seek a role," Zebari said in defense of the $500 million cost of preparing for the Arab summit. "Iraq's history is carved in history."

Snaky clouds of tracer chemicals hang in the sky over Virginia after today's five-rocket ATREX launch. The rockets released a stream of trimethyl aluminum, which is considered nontoxic but hazardous because it can ignite in the atmosphere. At high altitudes, the chemical trails took on a luminous glow that allowed scientists to track anomalous wind patterns in the jet stream.

By Alan Boyle

A combination fireworks show and UFO invasion played out in the skies over the U.S. East Coast this morning, thanks to the five-rocket fusillade launched from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. The rocket blasts were part of a $4 million mission called the Anomalous Transport Rocket Experiment, or ATREX.

The five suborbital sounding rockets were fired off over the course of five minutes, starting just before 5 a.m. ET, to track what's happening in the upper atmosphere. ATREX was designed to help scientists get a snapshot of strange ultra-fast wind patterns in the jet stream by releasing chemical tracers at different times on the edge of outer space, more than 60 miles high. Those tracers created milky white clouds that could be seen from Massachusetts to North Carolina.?Here are just a few of the spooky snapshots. For more about the mission, check out the full story.

A time-lapse picture taken from near the launch site at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia shows the blazing ascent of the five suborbital rockets, plus the release of the chemical tracers at high altitude.

Skywatcher and photographer Jack Fusco snapped this photo of the glowing clouds created by NASA's five-rocket ATREX launch from Seaside Park, N.J., north of the rockets' Virginia launch site.

Jeff Berkes Photography

Astrophotographer Jeff Berkes captured this view of the glowing cloud from West Chester, Pa. Berkes says he's driven hundreds of miles over the past week hoping to get pictures of the launch, which was delayed repeatedly. This time he had to stay at home, but he got an "amazing" view nevertheless. "Watching the rockets scream through the night sky was amazing," he said in an email. "It was even better to watch the tracers spread out from the rockets into the atmosphere. The colors were very intense for a short period and lasted about 30 minutes." For more of Berkes' work, check out his website.

NASA launched five rockets in Virginia on Tuesday. The rockets are part of a mission to better understand jet stream winds. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

Finding Business Finance to Start or Expand Your Business | The ...

? Previous

March 27, 2012 by Frank Goley, Business Consultant

Investment Overview Article

The business lending market has certainly gotten more difficult post-recession. Lenders want to see ample collateral, a good Business Plan, solid management team, excellent financials, etc. This is why business plan consultants and writers are in more demand in this tough economy. Businesses are realizing that they need a solid plan to present to funders, whether a bank, investor or venture capitalist.

So how do you find business finance in this challenging finance climate? Well, there are a lot of ways, SBA being one, investors being another, grants if industry specific need- there are a ton of business finance alternatives that I have blogged about previously (click on: Business Finance). In this post, I will relate a funding source that I read about in Entrepreneur Magazine, which I think holds a lot of promise.

Starbucks and CreateJobsforUSA.org to the Rescue

Starbucks has hooked up with CreateJobsforUSA.org to support a unique business lending program. Every $5 donated at a Starbucks location will support $35 in small business lending. Starbucks is partnered up with the Opportunity Finance Network, which is hooked up with 180 Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI). These CDFIs specialize in lending to disadvantaged and low income individuals and underserved communities in the US. This program launched in November 2011 with an initial donation of $5M from Starbucks. The leveraging is substantial: for every $3,000 donated, $21,000 is given out in loans.

Who Can Apply?

Anyone can apply for this financing which makes it viable for a lot of different types of businesses. Be sure to make a good impression by developing your business plan through SCORE, SBA, SBDC, or with a professional company that offers business plan services.

Preference Given to Businesses Who Create Jobs

One surefire way to secure this finance is to show in your Funding Business Plan that this loan will result in ?x? jobs. If you can show you will be providing jobs in hard hit economic areas, then you will certainly garner attention. ??

What Makes These Loans Different?

Well, have you been able to really talk to your banker about your business situation and needs lately? Does he come by your business and chat with you? Heck no?not in this big bank dominated bad economy?A CDFI will take the time to actually speak and counsel you- helping you every step of the way to have a successful business enterprise. Nice change of pace, huh?

Loan Program Details

Term: Five plus years.

Amount: Average is $200-$300K. Microloans of $5-$10K available. Some 7 figure loans given.

Interest Rate: 5%-7%. Short term micro?s will be higher.

Collateral: Required but you can cross collateralize a lot of different types of assets.

For More Information

Go to the Opportunity Finance Network. Get cracking on your business plan today!

Disclaimer: ABC Business Consulting is not offering any form of business finance, and this is for information purposes only. Any terms mentioned is for informational purposes and not intended or construed to be a loan offer. ??

A 24-karat gold key to unlock the immune system

ScienceDaily (Mar. 26, 2012) ? Developing a drug or vaccine requires a delicate balancing act with the immune system. On one hand, medications need to escape detection by the immune system in order to perform their function. But vaccinations -- de-activated versions of a disease or virus -- need to do the reverse. They prompt the immune system to create protective antibodies. But scientists are still stumped by how the immune system recognizes different particles, and how it chooses whether or not to react against them.

Using nanoparticles made of pure gold, Dr. Dan Peer, head of Tel Aviv University's Laboratory of Nanomedicine at the Department of Cell Research and Immunology and the Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, with a team including Drs. Meir Goldsmith and Dalit Landesman-Milo and in collaboration with Prof. Vincent Rotello and Dr. Daniel Moyano from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, has developed a new method of introducing chemical residues into the immune system, allowing them to note the properties that incur the wrath of immune cells. Because the gold flecks are too small to be detected by the immune system, the immune system only responds when they are coated with different chemical residues.

This breakthrough could lead to an increased understanding of the properties of viruses and bacteria, better drug delivery systems, and more effective medications and vaccinations. Their study was published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

A tool for exploration

To begin probing the immune system, researchers used particles of gold, approximately two nanometers in diameter, and covered them with various chemical residues. Only when water-resistant residues were introduced did the immune system respond to their presence. That established a demonstrable link between hydrophobicity -- the degree to which a molecule repels water -- and the reaction of the immune system.

This idea has a basis in the normal functioning of the immune system, Dr. Peer explains. During cell death, the hydrophobic areas of the cell membrane become exposed. The immune system then realizes that damage has occurred and begins to alert neighboring cells.

The researchers discovered that the same principle held true for the chemicals added to the gold particles' surface. The more "water-hating" the particle is, the more actively the immune system will mobilize against it, he says.

Dr. Peer observes that this is only the first step in a long line of experiments. "We are using these gold particles to tackle the question of how the immune system recognizes different particles, which might include features such as geometry, charge, curvature, and so much more. Now that we know the tool works, we can build on it," he says.

Testing the "Danger Model"

Until now, scientists have developed theories about how the immune system functions, but have lacked the machinery to test these ideas. One such theory is the "Danger Model" by Prof. Polly Matzinger, which hypothesizes that cellular damage interacts with immune cells at the membrane level. Once they identify the foreign molecule as a "danger," the immune cells send signals throughout the immune system. Their initial experiment with hydrophobicity was designed to generate a toolbox for probing this theory, says Dr. Peer, whose investigations included both in vitro and in vivo experiments using mouse immune cells.

In the future, researchers will study various bacterial, viral, or damaged cells and to make the gold nanoparticles even more similar, thereby discovering which elements of dangerous particles are calling the body's immune system to arms. "We now have the capability of using nanomaterials to probe the immune system in a very accurate manner," says Dr. Peer, a breakthrough that could revolutionize the way we understand the immune system.

Saudi Arabia pushing Bahrain to solve crisis, fears Syria effect

MANAMA (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia wants Bahrain's government and opposition to resolve a political crisis that it fears could worsen because of the sectarian fallout of fighting in Syria and destabilize its Eastern Province, a diplomat and opposition politician said.

Bahrain has been in turmoil since the Arab Spring protest movement first erupted a year ago. Clashes have become a daily occurrence, usually in districts populated by majority Shi'ite Muslims who have dominated the protests.

"We heard that at end of January the Saudis were reaching out to Wefaq and wanted to hear how Wefaq - if Act 1 was last year - how they were going to play their role in Act 2," a senior Western diplomat said.

The leading Shi'ite opposition party Wefaq was involved in backroom talks during a pro-democracy uprising last year on reforms offered by Crown Prince Salman, but the they were cut short when Saudi troops rolled in and martial law was imposed.

The revolt was led by Shi'ite Muslim majority population on an island which is important to Washington as the base for the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet.

The Shi'ite majority has called for sweeping democratic reforms that would reduce the Sunni ruling family's monopoly on power and allow parliament real powers to legislate and form governments.

One year on clashes between riot police and youths in Shi'ite districts have escalated, with heavy use of petrol bombs against police who in turn use large amounts of tear gas. Activists say at least 32 have died since martial law ended, though police question the causes of death.

In January Wefaq members met with Royal Court Minister Khaled bin Ahmed for preliminary discussions on a formal dialogue on democratic reforms.

The diplomat said Wefaq, which faces radicalization among many Shi'ite youth who oppose the monarchy, had met for a second time with the minister in recent weeks.

"There is stuff going on but it's getting more difficult than they imagined it would be. They are finding it difficult to get common ground," he said, citing government fears that Wefaq would command a parliamentary majority.

"You can foresee a political solution here that would keep the Saudis very happy, but I think the red lines would be slightly tighter than last year," he added.

Analysts say Riyadh sent troops last year because of alarm that Bahrain had not contained protests that had the potential to spill over into the Shi'ite Eastern Province region, where major Saudi oilfields are located.

An opposition politician, who did not wish to be named, said Saudi Arabia now feared that the conflict in Syria, in which Shi'ite Iran and its ally Hezbollah back Bashar al-Assad's rule, could sharpen Bahrain's sectarian divide - detracting attention from Syria and firing up Saudi Shi'ites.

"The Saudis are worried (the stalemate) could push the Shi'ites towards Iran... and at what could emerge as a consequence of Syria," he said.

Loyalist Sunni groups in Bahrain, who look to the ruling Al Khalifa for protection, have held protests against Assad and accuse Shi'ites of sympathy for Assad.

Media in Iran and Hezbollah give positive coverage to Bahrain's Shi'ite opposition, and Iraqi Shi'ites often demonstrate in support of their Bahraini coreligionists.

Some Sunni leaders in Bahrain fear the fate of Iraq's Sunnis, sidelined after Shi'ites gained power through elections.

Unrest in the Saudi Eastern Province has flared again in recent months.

"The Saudis really don't need unrest in the Eastern Province right now," said Michael Stephens, researcher at the Doha-based Royal United Services Institute. "The policy priority for Saudi Arabia has been Syria for last three months."

The Woman in the Fifth (2012)

Author Tom Ricks (Ethan Hawke) is having a rough time. He?s come to Paris to see his wife and daughter but she won?t see him. His things are stolen and he is forced to stay in the boarding house of the dodgy Sezer (Samir Guesmi) in exchange for acting as a watchman. But when he falls for the alluring Margit (Kristin Scott Thomas) his life gets even more dangerous. The trailer may have sold the film as a mystery but anyone with a passing knowledge of the thriller genre will be disappointed by how quickly they can tell where it?s going. But rather than getting too wrapped up in the logistics, The Woman in the Fifth is far more enjoyable if you let yourself become immersed in director Pawel Pawlikowski?s (My Summer of Love) view of the city. He seems far more interested in creating atmosphere than he does in his story, which, given the flimsy nature of storyline with the standard twists and tricks, is fair enough. Ricks? letters to his daughter describe the secret forest they created together as Pawlikoswski shoots close-ups of insect life, contrasting the fairy-tale fantasy with the indifferent (and apparently damp) reality. It?s refreshing, too, to see a grimier, less attractive, but no less interesting view of Paris to what we usually get from English languages films set in the city.Hawke is an obvious choice for the role of Tom, an intense, needy American writer in Paris. The character never really transcends stereotype but Hawke gives a solid performance. The film is unsurprisingly stolen from under his nose by Scott Thomas, who slinks into Tom?s life with a wicked smile and some ego-stroking words. She doesn?t appear until relatively late but the relationship between the two is one of the film?s strongest elements. Margit is muse, lover, and mother all rolled into one. Joanna Kulig is given much less to work with as Ania, the Polish girl at Tom?s boarding house who is inevitably incapable of resisting his charms.Essentially an art-house take on a B-movie premise, there?s less going on under the surface than the filmmakers might think, but it?s wonderfully atmospheric and Scott Thomas?s performance is predictably excellent. Verdict: Enjoyable but finally unsatisfying.

Many businesses comprehend the importance of sales training. A good deal of organizations today know the significance of sales instruction and that their staff have to be the best they can be if they?re to survive in the competitive business world.
Competition is large in business and staff education demands to be applied to keep on top of the competitors. All sorts of courses are provided and some might need to visit a central location whilst for others an in house training program may be more useful.

Some might begin with teaching what exactly is needed on a tiny scale, possibly in house and use their very own space. This may be from sales folks on the shop floor and senior managers keeping up with adjustments in business practice.

Lot?s of significant hotels offer you a conference service exactly where they hire out suites or rooms which are especially utilized for this objective. Some seminars will last just for several hours while others can carry on for weeks. Delegates that must go on the long courses are likely to remain in the hotel. They often employ their very own trainers that happen to be specialists in their field and are qualified to teach to numbers of individuals.

What exactly is on the agenda at these conferences will depend on who goes there and what the objective of it is. First time staff will understand the basics with the firm and how they anticipate their staff to behave and how to stick to a certain organization model. They must be specialist at all times as this reflects on their business and they?ll understand the firm?s mission statement.
